Our take

Based on the ratings of 382 students and a sample of their written reviews. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a 3.8 hour prep course for the Microsoft Technology Associate 98-364 Database Fundamentals exam, taught by Rwynn Christian, a software engineer and Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert in Data Management and Analytics. It starts with database concepts and moves on to writing queries, changing data and creating database objects, using slides plus demos in SQL Server Management Studio. It is aimed at beginners and database developers. One thing to know up front: Udemy now lists the exam as retired, and the course was last updated in 2021.

Reviewers like the structure and say it covers most of the exam. Several mention that the instructor answers questions fast. Two people passed with 88% and 95%, but both leaned on separate practice tests. The loudest complaint is the narration. Many describe a robotic voice with no intonation, and one reviewer felt it just reads the slides aloud. Others want more on normalization, functional dependency and joins, and one says fourth and fifth normal form are missing.

With 382 ratings and a 4.3 average, it scores well, and one reviewer called it an extremely good value. Still, treat it as a foundation, not the whole plan. Pair it with practice questions, and expect to pause a lot if you take notes. A Mac user also said Windows would have made the SQL Server parts easier. Since the exam is retired, it makes the most sense as a quick tour of SQL basics rather than a route to the certificate.

Best forBeginners who want a short, structured SQL Server-flavored overview of database basics and will add practice tests.
Skip it ifYou want a human narrator, deeper normalization coverage, or an exam that is still active. The 98-364 is retired.

Pros

  • Instructor answers questions quickly, which several reviewers single out
  • SQL Server Management Studio demos cover functions, stored procedures and commands
  • Short at 3.8 hours, with a clear structure that follows the exam objectives
  • Reviewers passed with 88% and 95% after adding outside practice tests

Cons

  • Text-to-speech narration is flat and robotic, the most common complaint
  • Thin on normalization, functional dependency and joins, and some exam topics are missing
  • Last updated in 2021, and the 98-364 exam it prepares you for is retired
Well put together course. I went through this course which gave me a really good foundation, and then I found practice tests online. Between doing that I was able to pass the test with an 88%

Beginner fits, but reviewers say some concepts are hard to grasp and need more visualization. No prerequisites are listed.

I really enjoyed taking this course. I've already had experience working with databases so it was a good review for me.

By Deon Bradshaw on 12/13/2020

Having taken a database administration course before, this was a good refresher, although it did not go into T-SQL database backup.

Overall the basics for the exam are there. Also it would also help non professionals get a flavor of DB Fundamentals. I would recommend some exercise files per sections / video and an overall "project" in the end for the people to have their hands loose.
I'm satisfied over the course.

By Qian Gao on 10/10/2020

A well explained lecture.

By DeAnna Wolf on 10/10/2020

It's a good pace, I already have experience in DBs, and it fills in the gaps I need to pass the exam.
