Course Description

Learning to create vector icons, logos, user interfaces, buttons, and more is a growing trend for both the web and mobile devices. This course focuses on abstract and flat-design techniques using Pixelmator's Shapes. Shapes allow you create icons, glyphs, logos, posters, and more in a vector format that is scalable without losing image quality at any size. Once a Shape is created, you can reuse it allowing you to never re-create that shape from scratch again.

This course is taught in a relaxed, conversational, unscripted style. Recorded to capture what it is like to hear a designer's thoughts as the designing unfolds. No slides, PowerPoint presentations, or scripts are used. The course is lean, trimmed, and fast-paced but you can still learn at your own pace. The lessons are taught in Pixelmator and the techniques and tools used are presented as you need to know them.

By the end of the course you will have the knowledge to create your own Shapes from scratch using Pixelmator. You will also understand the process to create and deliver icons, logos, posters, user interfaces, buttons, and more. Plus over 60 Pixelmator Shapes included.

Techniques and topics covered include:

  • Vector vs. bitmap graphics
  • Working with Pixelmator Shapes
  • Style attributes that add details to Shapes created in Pixelmator
  • Editing Shapes using nodes and handles
  • Using existing Shapes to create custom shapes
  • Building complex Shapes
  • Implement the latest design trends in flat-design
  • Applying masks and clipping masks to Shapes in Pixelmator
  • Organizing and ordering layers
  • Applying gradients and color palettes to Shapes
  • Saving Shapes to the Shapes palette to reuse or share with others
  • Working with Text in Pixelmator
  • Includes instruction on Pixelmator's Pen Tool and Freeform Pen Tool
  • Lesson on how to utilize the Effects Browser
  • Converting Fonts to Shapes to create custom typography and Shapes
  • Just-in-time-learning to not overwhelm the student with Pixelmator's many features
  • And a lot more tips, keyboard shortcuts, and tricks along the way

Over 100 Pixelmator Shapes will be added to the course throughout the year!

I started my design journey at a Fortune 500 company in print and publishing where I critiqued designs for quality and matching the clients needs as a final inspection before work was sent to clients. Since then I have gone on to consult on icon design, App Store submissions, and user experience, and even article writing. Some of my more recent work has included development on a kids game to help children learn numbers and letters. That app was voted #1 App-Of-The-Week. I also recently did design on an app for depression that was part of a Cambrige program in the United Kingdom. I consulted on an article about App Store Search for a blog on living well and being productive. I am currently designing icons for a Udemy course involving Pixelmator.I have three games in the Apple App Store, and I am working on my fourth game now, and an update to the first and second. Other projects are currently under non-disclosure agreements. I have been using Unity, Xcode, Blender, and Pixelmator as my go-to software applications on a daily basis for some time now and have plans to create courses on each in the future.

I have just started the course. I’m a long time user of Pixelmator and currently using version 3.9.9 classic and I am still learning things. I never managed to figure out how to make vectors so this course is great for me. I’m looking forward to learning more enough to be able to make my own vector graphics in the future.

la versione di pixelmator è un po' datata non riesco a trovare con facilità i menù e i comandi

I enjoyed seeing how the instructor created the icon artwork, especially using the shape tools. My problem is that I have Pixelmator Pro, and could not install Pixelmator Classic. Both programs are different enough that it was challenging when following the instructions. Would be nice to have the updated course available.

I knew nothing of Pixelmator (or vector graphics) when I started this course. It seems well-suited to my level of (in)experience, and is teaching me the basics of the Pixelmator tool set and how to use them to accomplish basic graphics tasks, which is what I needed to know.

The course showed me how to use the vector based part of Pixelmator. If you want to design an Icon or some basic symbols this course is the right one. I wanted to be able to design whole Flyer or brochures but that's not really covered in the course. So learning by doing now...

I have used Pixelmator for a few years now... without understanding or using any of it's vector capabilities. Joe's tutorial has provided me with much food for thought. I now have a solid handle on vector basics. I am particularly excited about the ability to modify text as shapes.

I've been using Pixelmator for several years, but never understood how to use the vectors and shapes. Even before the course got into those topics, I learned several very helpful tricks I had totally overlooked in the past! The instruction is clear and easy to follow, with lots of follow-the-leader exercises to show you how to use the many tools and tricks. Thanks for a great course!

I am so happy that I took this course and am excited to apply all of the tools learned. There were some minor differences in the versions, but nothing significant. My advice would be to watch on a different device. I had to stop and pause a lot throughout since I was watching and using Pixelmator on the same screen. Thanks so much for the great course!

Wow! I've owned Pixelmator for a while now and this course has been enlightening as to how I can use it for work even more than I thought originally. Mac makes it so easy and the dragging and dropping seems like magic. These simple steps create one powerful tool. This course has been invaluable to me in learning these little things.

The instructor's delivery was good and the production quality was better than I expected. The course's content is very limited, focusing on creating vector shapes for the most part, using existing shapes as a starting point. If you're looking for a thorough discussion on Pixelmator's vector capabilities or more content on the artistic side of designing with vectors, then this isn't that course. I would still recommend it as an introduction, which I believe was the intent, especially for hobbyists and those trying to get a good feel for this particular program's capabilities. My only constructive criticism would be that it seems some of the paths or steps the instructor led us down with the program's interface when working on a task seemed like the "long way" to accomplish the end goal. In those cases, I had trouble seeing the educational value of doing things that way, so I'm going to chalk it up to individual preference. It's not enough for me to discourage anyone from taking the course if you're looking to get an idea regarding Pixelmator's (or Vectormator's) vector capabilities or to get your feet wet with vector graphics. And I appreciated the tips on using the shapes and styles palettes. Some of those will definitely come in handy. Overall a good course if you take it for the right reason.
