Course Description

For far too many developers, running an application in production is an after thought. In big enterprises, as a developer, you write an application and then turn it over to another team. Someone else promotes your code into QA and then the operations guys eventually take your code to production.

Out of sight, out of mind right?

Wrong. Not so much anymore.

The age of DevOps has really brought developers and operations closer together.

Spring Boot has introduced a tremendous amount of functionality to the Spring Framework. If you are building modern Spring Framework applications, you're probably already using Spring Boot.

An awesome feature of Spring Boot is Spring Boot Actuator.

If you're a developer, Spring Boot Actuator brings you a set of tools you want to be using to help people in operations monitor your application.

Spring Boot Actuator is all about supporting and monitoring your application running production.

If you're in operations, Spring Boot Actuator is a set of tools you want your developers to enable in their Spring Boot projects.

Spring Boot Actuator is a set of tools for monitoring and managing Spring Boot Applications as they run in production.

As the industry moves towards microservices deployed in containers, automated monitoring becomes more and more important.

Out of the box Spring Boot Actuator provides a health endpoint which can easily be wired into container orchestration tools, such as Kubernetes or Open Shift, which can be used to trigger alerting or automated self-healing.

But Spring Boot Actuator is much more than just a simple health endpoint.

In this course you will learn:

  • About the available Spring Boot Actuator endpoints.

  • How you can write your own custom endpoints.

  • How to use Spring MVC to expose endpoints via HTTP.

  • About the out of the box health checks provided by Spring Boot Actuator.

  • How to write your own custom health check.

  • How to show Git commit information on the Information endpoint.

  • How to show build information on the Information endpoint.

  • How to see system health metrics (memory, cache hits, disk usage, etc)

  • How to add metrics to see your application activity (page views, or other custom actions)

  • How to change log levels at runtime to aid troubleshooting.

When things go wrong in production, wouldn't it be nice to know exactly what version of your code is running?

With Spring Boot Actuator, it's simple to add information from your Git checkin or your Jenkins CI build. Then, you can go to the information endpoint and know exactly what version of the code is running in production.

As you troubleshoot a problem, sometimes you need to see more detailed log output.

If you're running in production, your logging levels are probably turned down to keep the logging overhead at a minimum.

What you need is a way to shell into your running application and change the log levels.

In this course, you will see exactly how you can shell into your running application to adjust the log levels.

If you're deploying Spring Boot applications in today's enterprise, Spring Boot Actuator is really a must have.

Hi. I'm John.

I've been in the IT industry for over 25 years. Today, I specialize mainly in Java, the most successful and widely known programming language in use today. I also specialize with the Spring Framework, which the most popular open source application framework for building enterprise class applications on the Java platform. Just some of the organizations I've worked with include Visa, Kohls, Federal Home Loan Bank, and Belk Department Stores.

Through the courses I'm providing, I hope to leverage my years of experience to accelerate your learning of the Spring Framework. I'm not going to lie to you. The Spring Framework is a big framework. The environment for enterprise Java is even bigger. If you're new to Java, you have a lot to learn. I hope through the content on this web site I can accelerate your education of the Java and Spring landscape.

I think the course needs to be updated. Overall I think this course is great and gives a general idea of what we can do with Actuator, yet when you start getting your hands dirty most of the content is outdated. I had to read the docs and some posts on stack overflow to get things working on newer versions. Also, I couldn't get the chance to work with the shell as Spring Boot remote shell is now deprecated. I'm going to look for the best alternative to cover this topic, but that's why I give the course 3 stars and say it needs to be updated.

By Michal Eibl on 4/22/2023

I am afraid I cannot give 5 stars because the stuff here is heavily obsolete - those technical things are valid for Spring Boot 1 and almost nothing is valid in later versions, except the fact that all these things still exist and are available in a spring application; just they're done differently (actuator is not available by default, metrics are defined with annotations - the mentioned interfaces do not exist anymore, etc.). But still, it's a nice overview.

As usual, the John's courses are most valuable contents. I've enjoyed these one, as many others too, especially on Docker and on Spring Framework in general. If you are not sure to buy these one, it is a smart enough course to handle Spring Web Applications in production with customized features of Spring Boot Actuator. So it is a good bet for learning great stuff.

Hey John, the course was pretty useful to me because I didn't know about some of the presented features of Actuator. Some things in this course changed with Spring Boot 2 but that turned out to be a good learning opportunity actually. As an improvement of the content I would suggest, if you find time for it, to add a section with Spring Boot Admin project from Codecentric. It consumes Actuator endpoints and provides a nice UI that I'm sure many people will like and find useful. Thank you for the course!

I could sense that John has knowledge, but when he speaking particularly at times coding window on screen, his voice is like murmuring , not clear, not catchy, I could have given , use cases and tuning properties , would have been better. I request john to speak clearly , and slowly , try to open your mouth more that what you do at present, We are non native english speakers struggling to catch your pronunciation. Please open your mouth to pick-up more voice and clarity on your pronunciation.

Thanks for teaching me about Spring Boot Actuator course on Udemy. It was very well explained on all the topics. I have one comment about this course. This course was developed some time back and using Spring Boot v1.5.x. However, when I started to develop code using the latest Spring Boot 2.2.x version some concepts are available. Example: Actuator /trace to /httptrace, spring shell is deprecated and Micrometer CounterService is not available. For these topics, I referred to official Spring documentation modified the code.

By Michal Rogozinski on 3/26/2020

I loved your course! A couple of topics I'm missing as a newbie: - How do I secure the endpoints - you mentioned that it's a Spring Security topic, however it would be very helpful for me to at least know a simple setup - How can I connect multiple spring boot apps and show/monitor health information - How can I use the health information in docker/kubernetes regardless of that , it's still a 5-star review for me! thanks !

By Arne Schirmacher on 12/8/2019

The course material seems to cover a previous version of Actuator. Many links are now different, for example: /info --> /actuator/info /trace --> /actuator/httptrace The videos should at least have a textbox pointing out the differences. I'm not asking to re-record everything. But the current version of the course is very confusing, not at all the quality of the author's other courses. Also most of section 7 is unusable as the "Remote Shell" feature is discontinued in Spring 2.x.

By Jeff Schmidt on 12/1/2019

My own mistake. I've been using Spring Boot 2.x for a while now and was interested in learning more about Actuator. However, this course uses Spring Boot 1.4, and the remote shell which is was deprecated in 2.x. But, knowing the kinds of information available and how easy it is to create custom info/health/metrics, adjusting log levels is still very useful and I'll just have to lookup the Spring Boot 2.x way.

By Frank Lewis on 9/24/2017

I thought the course was very well presented and the examples were clear and easy to follow. I especially liked the adding of the section on how to get the remote shell working under OSX Sierra. The one thing that kind of bit me early on, and it was completely my fault, was that I was using spring-boot 1.5. The "sensitive" actuator endpoints are secured by default in spring-boot 1.5, so I had to figure out how to disable that (management.security.enabled=false). Also, the remote shell has been deprecated in spring-boot 1.5, so it seems that the section of the course using the remote shell will become obsolete. I would like to see an update to the course using spring-boot 1.5 and using the actuator endpoints via http (or using jolokia?) as a replacement for the remote shell. Keep up the great work. I look forward to my starting my next Spring Framework Guru course.
