Course Description

Believe it or not, almost all online businesses today make use of recommender systems in some way or another.

What do I mean by “recommender systems”, and why are they useful?

Let’s look at the top 3 websites on the Internet, according to Alexa: Google, YouTube, and Facebook.

Recommender systems form the very foundation of these technologies.

Google: Search results

They are why Google is the most successful technology company today.

YouTube: Video dashboard

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s accidentally spent hours on YouTube when I had more important things to do! Just how do they convince you to do that?

That’s right. Recommender systems!

Facebook: So powerful that world governments are worried that the newsfeed has too much influence on people! (Or maybe they are worried about losing their own power... hmm...)

Amazing!

This course is a big bag of tricks that make recommender systems work across multiple platforms.

We’ll look at popular news feed algorithms, like Reddit, Hacker News, and Google PageRank.

We’ll look at Bayesian recommendation techniques that are being used by a large number of media companies today.

But this course isn’t just about news feeds.

Companies like Amazon, Netflix, and Spotify have been using recommendations to suggest products, movies, and music to customers for many years now.

These algorithms have led to billions of dollars in added revenue.

So I assure you, what you’re about to learn in this course is very real, very applicable, and will have a huge impact on your business.

For those of you who like to dig deep into the theory to understand how things really work, you know this is my specialty and there will be no shortage of that in this course. We’ll be covering state of the art algorithms like matrix factorization and deep learning (making use of both supervised and unsupervised learning - Autoencoders and Restricted Boltzmann Machines), and you’ll learn a bag full of tricks to improve upon baseline results.

As a bonus, we will also look how to perform matrix factorization using big data in Spark. We will create a cluster using Amazon EC2 instances with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Most other courses and tutorials look at the MovieLens 100k dataset - that is puny! Our examples make use of MovieLens 20 million.

Whether you sell products in your e-commerce store, or you simply write a blog - you can use these techniques to show the right recommendations to your users at the right time.

If you’re an employee at a company, you can use these techniques to impress your manager and get a raise!

I’ll see you in class!

NOTE:

This course is not "officially" part of my deep learning series. It contains a strong deep learning component, but there are many concepts in the course that are totally unrelated to deep learning.

"If you can't implement it, you don't understand it"

  • Or as the great physicist Richard Feynman said: "What I cannot create, I do not understand".

  • My courses are the ONLY courses where you will learn how to implement machine learning algorithms from scratch

  • Other courses will teach you how to plug in your data into a library, but do you really need help with 3 lines of code?

  • After doing the same thing with 10 datasets, you realize you didn't learn 10 things. You learned 1 thing, and just repeated the same 3 lines of code 10 times...

Suggested Prerequisites:

  • For earlier sections, just know some basic arithmetic

  • For advanced sections, know calculus, linear algebra, and probability for a deeper understanding

  • Be proficient in Python and the Numpy stack (see my free course)

  • For the deep learning section, know the basics of using Keras

  • For the RBM section, know Tensorflow

WHAT ORDER SHOULD I TAKE YOUR COURSES IN?:

  • Check out the lecture "Machine Learning and AI Prerequisite Roadmap" (available in the FAQ of any of my courses, including the free Numpy course)

UNIQUE FEATURES

  • Every line of code explained in detail - email me any time if you disagree

  • No wasted time "typing" on the keyboard like other courses - let's be honest, nobody can really write code worth learning about in just 20 minutes from scratch

  • Not afraid of university-level math - get important details about algorithms that other courses leave out

Good course to get an idea of some of the most important algorithms / approaches within in this field. The introduction could be a little bit more general and more overview of the field could be given, such that the approaches are aligned within the overview. Regarding applying the approach to real world the course lacks information, also the usage of good evaluation metrics is poor. A policy on slide and code usage could be added and I find the approach on how to get the slides too rigid as well. Generally the lazy programmers courses are based on the foundations, I think he repeats this too often in his courses being afraid of bad reviews. More value on intuition and the foundations could be added here (e.g. adding addendum of important lecutres of other coures), yet most of the time he gives a good understanding of the most important concepts.

Especially liked the deep learning portion. Wow! This is simply one of the best courses out there for recommender systems. It covers every aspect from collaborative filtering to Google PageRank to Bayesian methods to matrix factorization and big data. You'd learn how to build the model and the workflow. You'd get to work on exercises to reinforce learning. This course certainly meets my expectation, and it's totally worth it.

I only completed the first 3 sections, which already gave me what I needed to progress on my personal project. I will certainly be back for the DL approaches. I personally like this instructor a lot and would definitely recommend it, but only to those who are willing to put in some work. Completing these courses is slower and more demanding than most other udemy courses on data science, but the content is of high quality and teaches in a solid and long-lasting way.

The structure of all topics is great. the codes are explained clearly. The thing I think it can be improved is about math equation explanation. I have seen from other instructors that made me can follow thought. (However, I also like that you have the section of math equation explanation, just it can be better than this)

This is a great great (not typo, I said great twice) course. It is far better than any other courses that I have taken about ML, DL, DS, etc if you know enough math. It is definitely the best choice if you want to know not only how to practice these methods, but also the math behind them.

By Lucas Song on 6/24/2020

The sequence of lectures built nicely on one another. It goes from simple recommender systems to collaborative filtering and matrix factorization, then to advanced deep learning and big data. Maybe you can't make it through the whole course in one go, I think that's a good property. You can keep coming back to the course and finding more and more value.

By Frederick Cannan on 3/13/2020

The presenter is clearly very skilled in this subject matter. He has put a lot of thought into how to present the course. Nevertheless, recommender systems are complex by nature. YET, simple to conceptualize. For the best effect I suggest you listen twice to everything, be curious. He moves fast through many topic areas, so don't be afraid to see how he has interpreted things and conceptualized a solution. I am still getting used to Python, it data structures and conversions. Listening twice allows me to see and understand the necessary transitions and manipulations.

Lazy Programmer is a rockstar. If you take seriously this course is equivalent to doing 3 weeks in college. The course is not only implementing the coding part but also deriving the math and bayesian statistics behind the models, which is absolutely amazing. He doesn't have energy in his lectures and it can seem boring at first, but it's worth to check the entire content up to the advanced parts. 5 stars.

I bought another Udemy recommender system course but that course made me crazy because that course just throw me names of theories without deep explanation and the programming projects used Surprised package, which taught me nothing about the algorithms and made the things hard. While this course is very challenging, the instructor does a good job to explain the theories and teaches me how to build recommender system without packages. For this course, Lazy Programmer is much better.

By Poete Maudit on 10/18/2018

The course is very good overall. Lazy Programmer demonstrates for another time his advanced knowledge in machine learning. Personally, regarding matrix factorization, I would expect him to work towards the improvement of the results (and not just leave them as such) where he would also inevitably provide some other hints about how to efficiently tune these algorithms and how these work under the hood. Also it could be also useful to use at some parts of his matrix factorisation any relevant library to recommender systems (e.g. Scikit Surprise) to make people more at-ease with them and perhaps also provide his view on the implementation of the relevant algorithms at these.
