Course Description
This course presents the fundamentals of a new area of research related to robotics called Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), which is based on the physical, cognitive, and social interaction between humans and robots. The HRI area focuses on understanding, designing, and evaluating the interaction between humans and robots that can communicate and/or share the physical space or workspace. The motivation for using HRI systems for an application where humans and robots can interact and cooperate is to reap the benefits of both worlds. For example, robots are great at performing repetitive and precise tasks, but they are not always useful for tasks that are complex or performed in unstructured environments. Humans, on the other hand, are excellent at complex manual tasks, have creativity, and excellent problem-solving skills, but tend to get tired or distracted easily. Among the main benefits of collaboration between humans and robots is to increase the productivity or efficiency of a process or a particular task, while reducing the workload of the human, and giving support to it in tasks that require it.
The theoretical foundations of the course, as well as the applications and case studies presented, will serve as a basis for students and professionals to work or investigate various applications that are not easy to fully automate, and that can benefit from interaction and cooperation between humans and robots.

Juan Pablo Vásconez
Prof. Vásconez is currently a professor and researcher at Universidad Andrés Bello in Chile, within the Faculty of Automation and Robotics. He holds a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Chile), and a degree in Electronics and Control Engineering from Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) in Ecuador. He previously worked as a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence and Vision Research Laboratory at EPN, focusing on topics related to Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, including Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), Human-Machine Interaction (HMI), assistive and collaborative systems, and algorithms capable of detecting various forms of non-verbal communication such as gestures, actions, and cognitive human parameters. He has also conducted research in precision agriculture using cooperative robots designed to interact and share workspaces with humans. His research interests include robotics, machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and computer vision.

the course explain detail view of HRC in the industry. Examples are very nice using Articulated robot and Mobile robot using different conditions.

Very poor additional resources and references (books and articles). Most of the chapters on the example for metrics are repetition of the theory and do not constitute a real example. Listening lacks fluidity beacause of the teacher clearly reading the content.

Very good course! At first, it focuses heavily on generalities and concepts of robotics and HRI. Then begins the part related to design concepts, metrics, taxonomy, and human factors, which really caught my attention. Finally, based on the applications and opportunities, the benefits of this course are clear. Highly recommended.

This course offered me a great tool to understand better the field of human -robot interaction and its aplications. I highly recommend to review this course till the end and make time to analyze the effect of HRI strategies in productivity on diferent processes. Finally, the case study related to safety based on human cognity parameters, catched my attention because it shows the benefits of using HRI for assistive robotics.

This is a very good course related to human-robot interaction. The topic is quite new, and research related to HRI is just beginning to be done in robotics laboratories at top universities. I have found valuable information in this course that I could not find searching the internet. This is thanks to the fact that the instructor is an expert in the subject of HRI. This course is very interesting, and I consider it a very good starting point to start working with HRI. The explanations are clear and concise, and the material used in the presentations is clear and well structured. I think that in the examples explained we can see the advantages of using an HRI system over one where only the human or the robot works alone. I recommend this course, it actually meets what it offers in the presentation of the course.
