UI Prototyping in Flinto (Udemy.com)
Create Interactions and Micro Animations

Our take
Based on the ratings of 54 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a compact 5.5 hour course on Flinto, the Mac prototyping tool, taught by Greg Rog, a designer who has consulted for Microsoft, Google and Adobe. Across 43 lectures it opens with a practical example to introduce the tools, then spends the second half building an intelligent home app to cover transitions, micro interactions, reusable components and importing screens from Sketch. Udemy lists it as beginner level, but the requirements say Mac only, UI design basics, and "meant for more advanced users". Take that seriously. It suits working UI and UX designers who already know their way around Sketch and want to add motion to their mockups.
Reviewers agree that Rog knows Flinto inside out and packs in practical details they can use day to day. The rating breakdown backs that up: 29 of 54 ratings are five stars and only one is below three. The consistent complaint, across four, three and two star reviews alike, is speed. Students say he talks and moves the cursor too fast; one describes pausing and skipping back several times to see what he clicked. Another reviewer wanted a Flinto file without the animations already built, plus tasks to complete along the way, since the course is mostly watching him work and copying it.
The last update was in February 2018, so expect an older Flinto interface, though the concepts hold up. With about 250 students it's a small course compared with the general UI/UX design courses it sits beside, and it's more specialized than those. If you want Flinto specifically and can live with the pace, it's a reasonable paid pick. If you use Principle instead, the Principle course in the same list is the closer fit.
Pros
- Second half builds an intelligent home app, so the features are shown inside a real project
- Instructor clearly knows Flinto well and shares day to day working tips reviewers found useful
- Covers the Sketch to Flinto handoff, reusable components and shape morphing transitions
- 29 of 54 ratings are five stars and only one review is below three stars
Cons
- Instructor talks and moves too fast; three reviewers say so and one pauses and rewinds to keep up
- Mac only, and the lessons assume you have a copy of Sketch
- Last updated February 2018, with no exercises or tasks and one long section of 43 lectures
The information provided is really nice and useful, only the instructor talks like he is late for his train and he needs to finish it up quickly.
Listed as beginner, but the requirements say UI design basics and "more advanced users". Best for designers already fluent in Sketch.

Course Description
Prototyping with Flinto is one of the most essential skills for the best UI/UX designers. The software allows its user to create transitions and micro interactions which very precisely showcase the project’s functionality. You are able to perfectly reflect the workings of an app before its final implementation or project presentation. Working with Flinto gives you an unprecedented level of control over every single aspect of the project, and this course is all you need to start your Flinto experience!
The first part of the course includes a practical example to help you become familiar with all the important concepts of how Flinto operates, functions and tools. We are going to design an effective mockup of an application interface and discover the potential of Flinto.
The latter half of the course involves practical application of Flinto functions in order to design all the transitions and animations for our intelligent home app. This project will prove how useful Flinto is, because it is entire possible to create even the most complex element of an app using this software.
Another great functionality of Flinto comes from its capability to connect layers via transitions. This function lets us design animations where one layer smoothly transitions from one screen to another or even create shape animations, which simply morph one into another.

My work is all about design, coding, and education. For over 10 years I've been a professional designer, design lead and UX consultant for companies such as Microsoft, Google, Adobe or Wacom. I created the biggest local website with video tutorials on code, design and more with over 100.000 clients. I also run a software house and a training facility, speak at design conferences and more. I'm curious, passionate and I love sharing knowledge.

The information provided is really nice and useful, only the instructor talks like he is late for his train and he needs to finish it up quickly. This occasionally feels stressful and startles confusion. I am an experienced designer but I find it hard to follow sometimes.

I'm giving this course an average rating not because the instructor doesn't know the software, he clearly does, very well but his delivery is poor, he speaks way too fast and moves around too fast too, I pause, skip back several times just to understand what he's done, I know udemy has a "slow down play button" but it is painful to use. If the instructor reads this, please slow down, I know you can't help the way you speak, maybe pause and give your audience time to follow, stop moving around the screen so fast too, this is an animation demonstration try to slow down.

This course is so good, easy to understand.

I am a fan of Greg's courses, but I have a few comments. I would like to get a flinto file without animation. I think people want to add transitions themselves, but they don't know how to delete them first. Not everyone has a sketch program (to download the latest trial version you need to update the version of the mac, which can be problematic). I also recommend giving people tasks to do during the course, to do some interaction with the students. I am sure that most people will not watch the course to the end, because it is boring to watch how someone else is doing the project, and copy the steps at best.

Excellent course. I did the Sketch course (by the same instructor) before this one.

I really like it but he speaks and goes through everything too fast.
