Principle App - UI Prototyping (Udemy.com)
Animate your Mobile or Web UI and add Micro Interactions

Our take
Based on the ratings of 196 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.
Greg Rog's course teaches Principle, the Mac animation tool designers use to add transitions and micro interactions to Sketch mockups. It runs about 5 hours across 40 lectures and works through two practical projects: a simple app mockup that touches every tool, then a real presentation exported as GIFs and posted to Behance. Udemy labels it beginner, but the requirements ask for UI design basics, say it is meant for more advanced users, and require a Mac. Rog has consulted for Microsoft, Google and Adobe, and reviewers say his Principle knowledge shows in examples that map to their everyday work.
Students rate it 4.3 from 196 reviews, and most praise the same things: it is to the point, easy to follow, and the projects are useful. The complaint in most low-star reviews is pace. Rog talks fast and waves the cursor around, and several people say they had to pause constantly or slow playback to keep up. One reviewer found the narration and the screen out of sync in places, and three could not find the exercise source files, one noting the Sketch assets are not included and nothing is offered for Figma users. The Photoshop and Behance section felt long and off topic to some.
The bigger caveat is age. The last update was February 2018, so expect some screens to look dated, and there is no Figma workflow at all. The Udemy description also describes Flinto rather than Principle, which is confusing before the first lecture starts. Beside the Flinto and Framer courses in the same list, this is the one to pick only if Principle is the tool your team already uses. Set playback to 0.75 and keep a Sketch file of your own handy for the exercises.
Pros
- Two real projects, an app mockup and a Behance presentation, so every tool gets used rather than just listed.
- Reviewers say the examples apply directly to their everyday design work, not toy demos.
- Short and to the point at about 5 hours, so a working designer can get productive in a weekend.
- Covers GIF export and the Sketch to Principle handoff, the parts designers actually need on the job.
Cons
- Instructor talks and clicks fast; most low-star reviews say they had to pause or slow playback constantly.
- Exercise source files are missing or wrong for some lectures, and there is nothing for Figma users.
- Last updated February 2018, Mac only, and the Udemy description talks about Flinto instead of Principle.
Very fast, but as soon as I learnt how to pause/play quickly I got used to the pace. It's very to-the-point so far.
Listed as beginner, but the requirements ask for UI design basics and a Mac; new designers should learn Sketch first.

Course Description
Prototyping with Flinto is one of the most essential skills for the best UI/UX designers. The software allows its user to create transitions and micro interactions which very precisely showcase the project’s functionality. You are able to perfectly reflect the workings of an app before its final implementation or project presentation. Working with Flinto gives you an unprecedented level of control over every single aspect of the project, and this course is all you need to start your Flinto experience!
You will find two practical projects, in the course. The first one is a simple application mockup to help you become familiar with all the functions and tools of the Flinto app, including: transitions, behaviors, gestures, easing, and more advanced animations.
In comparison with other prototyping tools, Flinto distinguishes itself by its wide array of unique capabilities, useful while creating micro interactions and animations. Behaviors, for example, allow the use of reusable components in the project, and save the designer a lot of time.
We also discuss interactive capabilities of Flinto, including its cooperation with Sketch. With a special plug-in, you will be able to export your finished project to Flinto, and contrary to other apps, manage the whole structure of editable layers, as well as vectors!

My work is all about design, coding, and education. For over 10 years I've been a professional designer, design lead and UX consultant for companies such as Microsoft, Google, Adobe or Wacom. I created the biggest local website with video tutorials on code, design and more with over 100.000 clients. I also run a software house and a training facility, speak at design conferences and more. I'm curious, passionate and I love sharing knowledge.

The course is quite good until you reach a point where you need to have some resources for a sketch file, which isn't included.. Not very Figma friendly

Learning about Principle was the best course I ever took. I enjoyed the animations that this class presented, I recommend everyone who are UX/UI designers to take this course.

Great course. Easy to follow, and now I have a great tool to add to my skillset. I needed to learn this tool pretty quickly for an upcoming project so I'm definitely more confident to work on the client's prototypes now that I've finished this course. Thanks so much!

Oui ! J'ai trouvé la portion sur le montage sur photoshop et Behance un peu longue et moins pertinente, moins dans le sujet de Principle.

The course is informative, interesting presentation. The author’s speech was quite fast, I had to slow down the playback, so this was not a problem. The only thing that was inconvenient and somewhat stupid - the author often just moves the cursor - and confusing. I was very pleased with the opportunity to make a real presentation.

So far, it's ok. But I can see the explanations are a bit too quick sometimes, the instructor could consider slowing down a bit as we are trying to follow his instructions as well as applying them in the software.

So far this course is incredibly informative and easy to understand. Can't wait for the next lesson! Would highly recommend this to anyone, whether your a novice or a pro looking to get into animation

Molto ben spiegato e approfondito, suggerisco magari di concentrarsi di più su Principle e meno sulle funzionalità degli altri software.

this course is amazing, as a product designer approaching the UX/UI world, this took my initial project to a whole new expert level. I'm super happy!

I was slightly skeptical on taking this course because of a review, but I'm so glad I did though. I think this is one of the better classes I have taken on Udemy. The instructors knowledge of Principle was awesome, and all the examples he gave apply to my everyday work. Thanks!!!
