Ian Dunbar

Veterinarian, animal behaviorist, and dog trainer, Dr. Ian Dunbar received his veterinary degree and a Special Honors degree in Physiology & Biochemistry from the Royal Veterinary College (London University) plus a doctorate in animal behavior from the Psychology Department at UC Berkeley, where he researched the development of social hierarchies and aggression in domestic dogs.

He has authored numerous books and DVDs about puppy/dog behavior and training, including AFTER You Get Your Puppy, How To Teach A New Dog Old Tricks and the SIRIUS® Puppy Training video.

In 1982, Dr. Dunbar designed and taught the world's very first off-leash puppy socialization and training classes -- SIRIUS® Puppy Training. Subsequently, he created and developed the San Francisco SPCA's Animal Behavior Department, the American Kennel Club's Gazette "Behavior" column, which he wrote for seven years, and the K9 GAMES®, which were first held in San Francisco in 1993 and continue as annual events in Japan and France. He hosted the popular UK television series Dogs With Dunbar for five seasons and has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, including the Today Show (US) and Dash Village (Japan).

Not what I was expecting but nonetheless enjoyable. Boiling puppy training down to a simple 4 step process, Command-Lure-Behaviour-Reward, makes perfect sense to me. The real skill is the timing, consistency and patience. My puppy's now 4 months old and I've already made lots of mistakes, but, hopefully, with theses tools and, maybe, some professional assistance I can iron out the bad behaviours I've trained!

A lot of funny stories mixed in with valuable information, Dr. Ian Dunbar has science and experience to back-up his simple, yet effective training techniques. This fun, casual seminar style can be somewhat hard to follow at times, but he does an excellent job of keeping you engaged. His mission to give every dog a proper education is inspiring and empowering. Through his passion, you fall in love with dogs all over again! I recommend this course for anyone and everyone who loves dogs :)

Excellent course that leaves me inspired to learn more from this world-renowned trainer. His ideas and execution of training fit my idea of what a great dog trainer is. His approach is holistic, fun, logical, compassionate, and respectful to the species which I believe is missing from many training programs taught today. I am excited to get started and instruct his way of teaching to dogs and their humans.

Excellent introduction to fundamentals of dog socialization and development. Dr. Dunbar mixes science in with interesting stories and humor keeping the viewer engaged. I am learning so much and the most important things are patience and understanding. I have successfully used many of the "tricks of the trade" he has shared while I am working at a new local animal shelter . Thank you for the lovely quote shared from your grandfather about animals and trust. I am referring this video series to all my co-workers (many are already fans!).
