Selenium WebDriver Masterclass with C# (Udemy.com)

Build Your Own Automation Framework And Learn Everything About Selenium WebDriver. Zero Previous Knowledge Required.

Created by: Nikolay Advolodkin

Last updated January 2023

Our take

Based on the ratings of 9,383 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a long, two-part course. The first half teaches C# from scratch, with sections on classes, arrays, interfaces and exception handling. The second half moves to Selenium WebDriver: locators, waits, drag and drop, Page Objects, and a framework built test-first. It runs 44 hours across 634 lectures. Reviewers say the C# lectures come from a different teacher, Dr Tiffany Ford, while Nikolay Advolodkin handles the automation sections. It is aimed at manual testers who have never programmed.

Most students are happy: 5,090 of the 9,383 ratings are five stars and another 3,499 are four. Praise centers on the Page Object and test-driven framework work, and several reviewers say it helped them start or do a QA automation job. The Selenium teaching gets mixed notes. Critics say Nikolay skips past fundamentals and some lectures are hard to follow. Others report videos in the wrong section, downloaded code that would not compile, and questions that never got answered. One reviewer found the C# pace fast for true beginners.

The bigger issue is age. The last update was January 2023, and reviewers mention older Visual Studio, an older demo website, and a TestProject tool that has since closed. Expect to adapt some steps on your own. Reviewers also want more on BDD and data-driven frameworks, and a version for .NET Core. For a patient beginner who does not mind debugging, it is a solid base. Experienced C# developers would only get value from the Selenium half.

Best forManual testers with no programming background who want C# basics and a full Selenium framework in one place.
Skip it ifYou already know C# well, or need current .NET, BDD with SpecFlow, or data-driven testing.

Pros

  • Teaches C# from zero first, so testers with no coding background can follow the later sections
  • Builds a framework test-first with Page Objects, NUnit, NLog logging and screenshots
  • Covers test strategy and best practices like DRY, not only Selenium commands
  • Reviewers report applying it to real projects and landing QA automation work

Cons

  • Last updated January 2023, so older tooling and a changed demo site make exact follow-along hard
  • Some reviewers report out-of-order or missing videos and downloaded code that fails to compile
  • Selenium lectures are called fast and thin on fundamentals, and student questions often go unanswered
This course helped me to become QA automation engineer but before this course I had no experience in test automation.
Milos Karac, a student

Listed for all levels, but it fits manual testers new to coding. It assumes testing knowledge and a Windows PC.

Nikolay does an excellent job of not only teaching Selenium WebDriver but Test Approach and Test Strategy as well (which are equally important to test automation). I've learned so much and plan to reference this course often. Thanks for an amazing job and keep up the good work! The only downside to this course is that some things are outdated and won't work but he's mitigated for that as well by adding Outdated and Soon to be Removed Warnings. Technology is constantly changing and it's tough to keep up. Overall, 5 stars!! P.S. Nikolay, TestProject has closed down and is no longer available for free since March 2023. That section may need to be removed.

C# part, the lady professor goes too fast when it comes to explanations. It seems like she is used to teaching students who go to programming university, and forgets that people here do not share the common knowledge those students have. Also, it would be very desirable to have more coding tasks that are of different difficulties. Not just 1 or 2 per section. The selenium part is a lot better.

By Kyle Maxwell on 12/6/2020

The C# portion has many instances of the answer to a coding quiz covered, "In the next section, I promise." The Selenium Intro is much the same. There are many videos out of order. They are there, but randomly added to the wrong section. Some are flat out missing. The TDD of the Framework is very good but, again, much of the same issues. There are some great tidbits like the AutomationResources project and specifically the WebDriverFactory. You share the code for comparison but I should not have had to use it as much as I did, just to get the code in a working state. A little more attention to detail would have put this course over the top, for me.

By Fatih Unal on 8/22/2020

It is a comprehensive course that includes c# training, selenium and other auxiliary tools. But some parts of the training has become outdated or needs minor updates. Also it is very clear that last part of the training is appended after the training has been prepared. One more issue: Links should open in a new window, not in the same window, when you click a link in the education video gone and that new page opens.

By Ashish Mishra on 2/2/2019

I had gone through various tutorials of Selenium and i consider this to be the best till date because: 1- You gradually learn the concepts as you keep moving 2- The concepts are well explained with examples 3- Tests at the end of most of the sections helps in cementing the concepts 4- The tutorial blends from C# to selenium effortlessly 5- The best part, as you start loosing interest or focus, he comes up with some really amazing concepts or tutorials that makes you feel you really learned something great. 6- By the end of the tutorial coding and logic building seems as simple as framing an English sentence. The only concern i have is : I had raised a query, which isn't answered till date however i had found the solution after googling a bit. It would have been better if the instructor is 'as ready to answer queries' as his superb tutorial is :) Expectation: It would be really nice if he can come up with something of Selenium with Specflow.

Great course Nikolay! Absolute one of the best course on the net. Deep-learning and very informative. I have already build my first framework at work and are now teaching my colleagues how to build a proper and stable test framework. I hope to see more tutorials from you Nikolay. Thank you!

By priyanka P on 6/26/2018

It is an excellent course. I started to learn automation back 4 years ago, and I had to collect a lot of bits and pieces of the best approaches for a DRY principle and TDD , I couldn't find one. This is the best course I ever enrolled. Great job Nikolay

By Gregg Bursey on 5/9/2018

This course really helped me understand not only how to write Selenium tests themselves, but also the structure in which all tests should be written. I especially enjoyed the sections about the Page Object Model Design Pattern and the subsequent examples on how to implement that.

By Randhawa Verma on 4/3/2018

Well I can't explain in words how much am excited after completing this course. The more I was close to completion the more am getting excited. You are a great instructor Nikolay. You don't just taught Selenium but other aspects of being a beautiful coder. I would agree this course doesn't have all you want but after finishing this you won't be standing puzzled in the automation world. Everyone should know to be a better automation engineer, it gets years of experience. My journey has started. Through out this course, I just not get the skills but a motivation to become a better automation engineer. Now am pretty confident and can say "Yes" to my clients when they need me to automate the application. One thing I would like you to continue is keep updating us on latest features in Selenium, features that are getting obsolete etc. Thank you Sir for all the hard work and effort you put in the course. Surely would like to see you in another engaging course!

By Gerard Aguilar on 11/12/2017

Though useful, the WebDriver material felt disorganized due to outdatedness. Specifically, the swap between FirefoxDriver and ChromeDriver was explained but was limited to the beginning. It may be a good idea to briefly mention what can go wrong at the beginning of the section (for example: Chrome opening a new tab, where Firefox would have just opened the link on the same tab.) Also, walking through errors are great learning experiences, but it may be a good idea to provide a "move on to the solution" option. The scale of a completed test framework for a well-known website would also be nice to get a preview of.
