Our take
Based on the ratings of 34,314 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is Chris Haroun's biggest course, about 23 hours across 230 lectures, framed as a new hire training program at a pretend bank. The syllabus covers macroeconomics, a tour of 14 finance job roles, portfolio management in Excel, and a set of case studies where students build the financial statements, model, and valuation for a fictional company called Shark VR. It is pitched at complete beginners with no finance or Excel background, and even a lukewarm three-star reviewer concedes the Excel side is useful for beginners. Around 280,000 students have enrolled.
Students like the instructor's energy. Reviewers describe him as fun, down to earth, and full of real-life examples and experience, and several say the practical, no-theory approach makes a complex subject easy to follow. Nearly 9 in 10 of the 34,000 ratings are four or five stars. The complaints are few but specific. One three-star review says the finance content stays on the surface and promises depth that never arrives, and that the course is more Excel than financial analysis. Another reviewer notes the portfolio dashboard spreadsheet broke because Yahoo Finance changed, and a third wants proper assignments, since there are only four quizzes.
The course was last updated in May 2025, so most of it is current even if one spreadsheet lags behind a data source. Next to Introduction to Finance, Accounting, Modeling and Valuation on the same list, this one is the broad career overview rather than a focused modeling drill, at least judging by the syllabus. Take it if you want a wide map of the finance industry and a first pass at Excel modeling. Look elsewhere if you need rigorous valuation practice.
Pros
- Case studies model a fictional company's statements, DCF, and IPO from scratch in Excel
- Covers 14 finance roles with pros, cons, and how to get hired in each
- Reviewers find the instructor fun, down to earth, and full of real-life examples and experience
- Refreshed in May 2025, with 88 percent of 34,000 ratings at four or five stars
Cons
- One reviewer says the finance content stays on the surface and leans more on Excel than analysis
- Only four quizzes and no assignments, so there is little to check what you learned
- The portfolio dashboard spreadsheet reportedly broke after Yahoo Finance changed its data
I like the trainer, he is fun and down to earth and has real on the ground experience
Listed as all levels, but it really suits newcomers; no finance or Excel background is assumed and one reviewer says the finance side stays shallow.

The pitch for the course seems promising. I like the project based learning approach, working for a fake hedge fund. I'm a bit skeptical that I will learn everything I need to know to be a financial analyst better than the pros from taking this course.

There are many powerful explanations and interesting ways of how to succeed as a financial analyst and in investing, as well as what the drivers are in macroeconomics to analyze the financial dashboard portfolio. Regarding the tutorial that is given, it is just how to make its dashboard, as the instructor has already made it. But it depends on us whether we build in our own way.
