Our take
Based on the ratings of 2,421 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2016. No course pays to be reviewed.
Iliya Ryakhovskiy's course is a long, structured walk through scales, chords and arpeggios. The syllabus shows 240 lectures and about 23 hours. It opens with piano basics and theory, spends one section on each of twelve keys, then moves into intermediate and advanced scales, chords, arpeggios and improvisation. It suits people who have never played, or who want to restart after years away. The approach is technique first. Songs are a side dish.
Reviewers who rate it four or five stars call it clear, organized and easy to follow, and one says it builds a solid foundation. One student who had tried other piano courses called it clear and direct. The complaints are consistent too. People say it is repetitive, with few pieces to play and no sheet music, so students learn by watching his fingers. Others wanted more on improvisation, and one reviewer thought the advanced theory terminology got shaky. One student said two questions to the instructor sat unanswered for over 20 days.
The last update was December 2016, so expect no fresh material. Even so, a 4.7 average from about 2,400 ratings and over 18,000 students says most people are satisfied. Take it if you want a drill-based system that covers every key in one paid course. If your goal is playing recognizable songs or reading music soon, a different beginner course will probably suit you better.
Pros
- Covers all twelve keys with scales, chords and arpeggios in a repeatable pattern
- Reviewers call the teaching clear, organized and easy to follow
- Basic, intermediate and advanced tiers, so beginners can keep going in one course
- About 23 hours over 240 lectures, with a 4.7 rating from roughly 2,400 reviews
Cons
- Few actual songs and no sheet music, so students learn by watching his hands
- Drills feel repetitive, and improvisation gets thin coverage
- Last updated in 2016, and one reviewer says questions went unanswered
I have gone through couple of piano courses, this course is exceptionally very clear, direct and helps learning piano at basic, intermediate and advanced level.
Listed for all levels, but it fits beginners and returners best. Only a piano or keyboard is required.

I'd have liked more focus on improvisation, because I feel it lacked explanation and more videos on improvisation. In the end I only know how to play scales and chords but not how to improvise, that needs a rework and much more emphasis to make this course better. Maybe like an improvisation video for each tonic like in the previous segments.

I am currently on Section 7: The key of G. I started in January 2019 and date of this review is 11/DEC/19. This course is big. I have not seen any signs of music theory but as far as learning chords and arpeggios it is fantastic. Excellent value for money.

Awesome Piano Instructor. I really like the approach he used for training, especially the Improvisation section. As I am also taking Classical Training, So, by this particular course, I realized the Importance of Improvisation. Really, today the classical world gives very little attention to Improvise. Improvisation at the time of Mozart and Beethoven (and many other classical composers) was very common, and still, today, if anyone is willing to create good music, they should improvise. This course is recommended for all new pianists. "Slow and precise wins the hearts".

This course provides an excellent piano foundation and moves at an effective pace. It avoids sight reading so we can focus completely on scales, arpeggios, rhythm, and improvisation. It includes instructions on how to play a few familiar and entertaining songs. This covers everything necessary to play piano and improvise for the rest of our life. The humble instructor demonstrates and explains everything effectively with enthusiasm. There is NOT a lot of useless talking or repetition to waste our time. In the first few sessions, it seems a little boring and repetitive but actually provides an excellent practicing strategy for life. The different scale and skills are repeated with the same pattern in each lesson so that we know what to expect as we move along into the advanced lessons. This is a very unique approach. He considers and answers many of the questions we might ask. He is one of few instructors that can be methodical, thorough, and motivating at the same time. Students who finish this course, *as it was designed*, will not just play scales and arpeggios around the circle of fifths, but will be able to really understand and play beautiful piano music.

Exhaustive and a great course. Explanation of the major, minor scales/modes, chords, apprgeios, chord progression, improvisation is awesome. Truly a great course for all to learn piano/keyboard in a very orderly manner. Thanks! IIiya. Your lectures are clear, engaging and resourcefull and energetic. Looking forward for more courses from you.

Really clear, builds on our previous learning. I am going straight through all the lessons, not skipping any of them. This is a great foundational course so far! I am looking forward to the advanced videos! Great job, Iliya!

I've never counted to 25 so many times in my life haha! It took me a long time to finish but was all worth it. Because of the course I've noticed how very important repetition is using the correct fingering, technique etc, thank you so much you are a great teacher!

Your lessons are truly amazing , beautifully planned out for you to advance to the next level and is definitely not easy . Stay with it and you will be amazed at your progress, know that I said this earlier, but the lessons are truly amazing

I have purchased a lot of piano books, videos. This is the best I've seen so far. I do not give five stars lightly; I wish I had seen this course a long time ago; it would have saved me a lot of wasteful hours and money in books, private lessons, and videos. I wish the author would come out with tutorials covering various genres, chord progression, note reading, and soloing; either way, I am more than satisfied. I see my progress daily, and my imagination is evolving music-wise. Hoping he will come up with more tutorials.
