Course Description
A New Way to Learn
For over a decade, Pianoforall has taught over 300,000 people worldwide how to play amazing pop, jazz, blues, ballads and improvisation, and now we’re going to teach you how to play INCREDIBLE Classical pieces in the same way.
These courses are for ADULT BEGINNERS who would love to build a repertoire of great classical pieces but who don’t have the time (or the inclination) to learn the ‘traditional’ ‘hard’ way.
This Classics By Ear Series will teach you a NEW way to learn classical piano – from the ‘inside out’.
Instead of painstakingly learning complicated sheet music one note at a time by memory, you will learn how to take a piece of classical music apart bar by bar, section by section, and understand how it was all put together: from the musical ‘form’ – distinct sections and subsections – to the underlying chord structure, visual clues, patterns and repeats.
So not only do you learn how to play – the pieces but you UNDERSTAND what you are playing and this makes it SO much easier to memorise and perform.
No more performance fear
This really helps if you feel nervous performing in front of others. If we rely solely on ‘muscle memory’ we can have a fear of ‘forgetting our lines’ but if we have a deep understanding of a piece from many different angles – chords, sections, patterns, repeats and memorable elements – then we go beyond muscle memory until it feels as if we have written the piece ourself!
And you will learn everything in a refreshingly NATURAL way – the way we all learn to speak or read as kids: we first LISTEN to others, then we imitate them and SPEAK what we hear – and ONLY then do we attempt to READ words or sentences that we can already say. And so it makes so much more sense.
Similarly with Classics By Ear you will learn to play the pieces by following the videos, keyboard diagrams or ‘cheat sheets’, and then you will find it MUCH easier to follow the sheet music – because then it will all make perfect sense!
No Cliched Beginner’s Pieces!
The pieces you will be learning aren’t the usual cliched beginner’s pieces (like ‘Fur Elise’ or ‘Minuet in G’). We have especially chosen pieces that sound more advanced (watch the Promo video to hear the pieces) yet they are actually deceptively EASY to play – which means your audience will think that you have been playing for YEARS!
The course is perfect for those people who read a little music but aren’t very advanced – or those who play by ear but want to play some beautiful classical pieces.
If you have no prior knowledge you can still follow the lessons if you are prepared to put in lots of practice, but I suggest you also study sections 1 to 5 of my main Pianoforall course, which will teach you basic sight-reading and chord theory. Section 2 of this course also teaches BASIC SIGHT READING in just 18 minutes! It will give you enough knowledge to follow the rest of the lessons.
Like Pianoforall – these Classics By Ear courses come with exceptional and comprehensive supplementary PDF ebooks that you can print out and set on your piano or keyboard.

Beautiful piece to learn and very well explained and teached by Robin Hall. As a beginner I very carefully watch the finger settings and it was not always completely congruent in the cheat sheet and in the videoplaying. In the right hand sometimes the fingers 2 and 3 were mixed up. But I found my way and learned the piece. Still need a lot of practise for timing and dynamics.

Love this course! Inspired to play again after a “little” break of 60 years. Breaking the piece into sections and identifying the memorable elements of each section makes it easier to memorize and adds tremendously to the pleasure of playing. Warmest thanks for this wonderful method and please add more pieces to learn here on Idemy.

I played the guitar for about 20 years and learned parts of about 25 songs... However, I never COMPLETELY learned a whole song! In 4 months, being a BRAND NEW PIANO PLAYER with no note reading capability, I've memorized both pieces by EAR! It's blown me away! The key is I ENJOYED listening to the piece as I played. I still don't read music and would like to... but, it's not fun for me to read music at this stage. I'm thrilled with my ability to play these two preludes. I have the original course that I did not use but will go back and pick it up then move on to Satre's and the Moonlight Sonata. Keep up this great work! Magnificent and I would recommend it 10,000%!

Don't hesitate to buy this course its absolutely brilliant. Robin is a great teacher and very thorough. I am a novice player and it has taken me just over a week to learn this piece, ..... yes I play it at a slower pace then it should be played but the way he teaches helps the patterns/phrases stick in your brain so your fingers are not searching for the next phrase. Speed and dexterity hopefully will come later with more time practising but because I can hear it coming together now it makes me practise more - so far I am stoked to see how quick this was to learn.

I absolutely loved both Classics By Ear courses (Satie and Bach). Robin has a wonderful way of teaching, by breaking down the structure of each piece into smaller manageable bits that clarify the patterns and the changes. The way he teaches also makes it easier to memorise pieces, as I always want to be able to play them without needing to rely on my notes. His accent is a treat too. :-) Robin, I hope you will create more of these courses - maybe some Chopin? or Beethoven?

For someone who tried to learn piano as a child, this class has been a breath of fresh air, as well as a confidence booster. I already had a basic understanding of reading music and playing but had not tried to play the piano for decades. The step-by-step structure of this class and viewing each step as a pattern of notes/finger movements was brilliant for me. Then, the addition of a final lesson that brought expression into the piece rounded out my experience perfectly. I so enjoyed this class! I would love to see more piano classes like this from Robin that focus on learning individual compositions. Maybe some Vivaldi or The Beatles? :) Thank you for a great class!

You have made this so easy to play with the wonderful visuals adn Instructions which I printed out to have at hand. At 74 years of age, I finally found a beautiful tune to be able to play because of you're program. Brilliant. I'm almost up to the speed that you play at till working on that and the various volumes required to make this piece sound properly. I have purchased you"re other programs so I have much to do and much to look forward to. Fills my early mornings, my late nights. Robin, You have some very powerful and Brilliant teaching power. Thank You, Ginter

This course helped me get started with playing the piece straight away. I don't have experience playing the piano or reading the sheet music, I only tried a few times with very modest results. This time it's different. All the information and the commentary is really helpful; looking at the way chord progression is structured from so many angles helps to memorise it quickly. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

Excellent breakdown technique. This was an excellent match for me. I tend to want to jump ahead before I have mastered a section completely. This kept me on track and I could go back and work on any section I needed too work on. I am 70 years old and memorization has become difficult but I was able to stay focused and work through each section at my own pace. I realize that this was not a complex piece but I will apply the technique to other songs. Thank you.

Another awesome course from Robin. This is my third course from Robin on Piano. Loved the piano-for-all (still in progress) and the Erik Satie (finished 2 out of 3 pieces) and now this preludes from Bach enriching my musical journey. A very nicely and carefully created course content. To be honest, its little more than I required (as I've been consistently playing for over 10 months now) but I can understand a real beginner would need all the details/help which the instructor has covered in this course. This is hands-down the best classical piano course on Udemy. I'm done with prelude-cmajor for now and can't wait for improve it before I jump into cminor. Dear Robin, Thanks you sir... hope you keep on creating such courses covering classics.... and possibly some Chopin pieces (psst: Waltz in A minor).
