Course Description

Who did Jesus think he was? What was the purpose of his ministry? And how do we know?

The Gospel of Luke situates itself as a work of serious history, using eyewitness testimony and oral tradition as its source material. It is the history of Jesus of Nazareth – a real, flesh and blood human – whose personal story is at the same time the story of God’s intention to put things right, for Israel and for the whole world. It is the story of a confrontation between the familiar empires of the world and God’s Kingdom, built on a new model of lordship; it is the story of a revolution of healing and feasting, rather than of violence.

In this course, Prof. Wright ushers students through Luke’s Gospel scene by scene, commenting and drawing out major themes and points of interest. He elucidates the narrative underpinning Luke’s accounts, untangling familiar parables, and dispelling well-worn misunderstandings along the way. Does Luke really depict a more human Jesus than other Gospels? What did Jesus mean by the age to come? This course focuses especially on Mary’s Magnificat as the beating heart which drives Luke’s portrayal of Jesus as Israel’s Messiah come to proclaim God’s visitation of judgement and mercy.

In this course, you will explore themes such as:

  • Jesus’s way of peace.

  • Jesus’s message of warning & welcome.

  • The Temple as a symbol of God’s heaven/earth reality.

  • How the powers of evil and darkness are defeated.

This course contains 43 video teaching sessions (15-20 minutes each), which you can watch or listen to online or on the Udemy mobile app. Also provided are optional quizzes to check your comprehension, Q&A sessions with Prof. Wright, and reflection prompts to help you apply the material. We encourage students to proceed through this course at their own pace and consult the supplementary resources provided. Students possess lifetime access to course materials.

This is just atleast so far very long videos and the usual punchline never comes

well, for the last couple of years, I have been focused on trying to understand the apologetics of the Pro-Life Fascism of the Total Depravity Gospel of Pat Robertson and the Jesus Seminar, and I had forgotten what a pleasure it is to think about all the Gospels and Acts as literature The dialectical Marxism of the Post Modern Historic Deconstruction of the ubiquitous critical historic method never manages to rise above the broken pottery and archeological excavations of history, which is anthropology without the music and restaurants. Rev Wright's enthusiasm and embracing joy of the literature is a tonic.

This was an excellent teaching series on the Gospel of Luke. I have watched several of Wright's other teaching series and have found them all very informative. In all of his teaching series that I have watched, he does a wonderful job of integrating OT teachings, and cultural and historical contexts with the primary topics and teachings of the passages. Overall, Wright's series on the Gospel of Luke was enjoyable (I love his British accent) and very informative!

Prof. Wright's exposition of Luke's Gospel has awakened in me a renewed sense of wonder at the breadth of his learning and insights. I have greatly enjoyed his continual reference to the specifics of the Greek text. I am particularly indebted to him for the the three summarising sections at the end of the course to which I listened with rapt attention as I would to a truly great preacher.

Professor Wright provided many details about the Gospel According to Luke that were informative and scholarly. This can be a challenge and had the right balance. This book came alive during the lectures. There were many times where I almost felt like I was seeing the events in real time. I was affected in a profound way. I came away from this course more in love with Jesus than when I started this course. Thank you Professor Wright!

Yes, the course is excellent. I have always enjoyed reading Luke and the stories of Simeon, Anna, Zechariah, Mary and Elizabth are extraordinary and so inspirational and down to earth believable. Dr Wright explains Luke's reasons and system of writing the gospel. I am looking forward to the rest of the course. Thank you for making this amazing course available.

By Marinda De Villiers on 10/11/2022

I find Professor Wright’s insights and continuous highlighting of the key themes that run through this gospel extremely helpful. The strong links to the Old Testament scriptures, and the explanation of the temple language and -imagery bring so much depth of understanding of what Luke manages to communicate ‘so artfully’, as Prof Wright observes. I also marvel how Prof Wright lays bear the threads of new creation - the Kingdom reality - throughout the course. Imagine what would happen if these texts could be preached around the world with all these echoes and overtones in mind? What a rich contribution to the church! Praise to God and a huge thank you to the team working tirelessly to make Prof Wright’s teaching so accessible.

A great course covering every detail of the Gospel. Dr. Wright explains all those confusing and troubling passages in the Gospel, especially the passages where you wonder if Jesus really meant what he said. I will use this course as reference material for years to come. Thanks to everyone for presenting this course, it is invaluable in understanding Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.

By Jeffrey Turnbull on 9/28/2022

This truly inspirational course would benefit individual Christians and fellowships everywhere. It demonstrates the weakness of the pattern followed in so many churches of studying and preaching from sections of the Bible and thereby missing the themes and messages which can only be discerned by considering a complete book. Professor Wright in his remarkably erudite teaching demonstrates Luke’s understanding of Jesus’ message as one of peace and reconciliation. He shows the implicit teaching of justification by faith, of prayer and praise throughout the Gospel and concludes by reinforcing the truth that Jesus is now Lord of the World, Jesus is the embodiment of the true God and with the ministry, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, the new creation has begun.

I've read the Gospel of Luke many times over the years but never had I been able to reach the depth this book offers as I have through this Udemy class. Prof. Wright explains Luke's historical background and contextual meaning which enliven and colorize the book to the point that you can understand and see your own welcome in the story. Additionally, the included resource "Pause and Reflect" questions go to the heart and will challenge you as far as you personally allow. This is the kind of growth I'm here for. And the quizzes, as always, help reinforce what you've learned and help you retain what you've read. After completing this course, I feel that I have walked with Jesus in such a way that gives me hope that the story has continued and is continuing and I have the blessing to be a part as a follower of Jesus.
