Course Description
Hello, and welcome to the course I wish I had when I started out with pfSense.
My name is Stefan, and I am an officially certified pfSense professional. I had the pleasure of learning what I know directly from Jim Thompson (the CTO and a Core Team Member of Netgate/pfSense).
After finishing this course, you will know everything you need to operate all the basic functions of a pfSense firewall with confidence. You will also learn how to navigate through your firewall with ease. You can use this knowledge if you want to implement a pfSense firewall into your home network, but you will also be able to integrate and operate a pfSense firewall in a business environment. This is a hands-on course - you are encouraged to follow through with all of the steps as I do them on your firewall.
Please note that you don't need a physical appliance to follow along with this course. A computer with 8GB of RAM is enough to run a virtual machine with pfSense (covered in the course).
Since integrating pfSense into my home network many years ago, I immediately fell in love with it. Back then, there were hardly any guides or tutorials for pfSense - so I decided to create my own - which has helped to turn my YouTube channel and my blog into one of the most popular resources for pfSense on the internet.
I have also worked with pfSense professionally in a startup for several years, where I built a complete hybrid-cloud setup using multiple pfSense firewalls - so I have seen both worlds.
This is the only Udemy course taught by an officially certified pfSense professional.
Because of my experience with the community of my blog and my YouTube channel, I know what people struggle with most, and I pay extra attention to those topics.
I leave nothing out - I don't assume you have any prior knowledge.
Everything is up-to-date - this course was made with pfSense 2.5 and is fully compatible with pfSense 2.6.
This course will always stay up-to-date. If anything changes, I update the course accordingly
In the end, I also tried to make this course fun. I am not a fan of "dry" content, so I'm throwing a lame dad joke in here and there to loosen things up and keep you motivated.
2023 Update: This course has been updated to use the latest version of VirtualBox (7.X)

Once I got past the setup of the router itself (which the instructor was very helpful with -- I set it up both ways, virtual and physical) the course went very quickly and well. It has given me a lot of confidence with working with pfSense.

Very good intro to PFSense. It explained several problems that I was encountering as a newer user. Several tutorials didn't work for me, though, including the Squid Proxy and getting VirtualBox to work on a Mac (I ended up having to use a Windows machine). I would have liked a bit more explanation on VLANs as it gave just the bare minimum to get started, but not enough to do anything with it. The instructor was enjoyable and spoke concisely. I would recommend for someone starting out in pfFSense.

This course was a great intro to settting up PfSense for Home and Homelab use. The Instructor was clear and easy to understand. He moves slow enough to get the concepts, but doesn't linger on basic tasks. When I needed more time to get setup, I just paused the video. I set this up on a laptop using the exact setup he used. I created backup points along the way, so I can revert back and practice certain task again. (Installing OpenVPN server). Great course!!

The course content gives you a brief glance of how run the initial setup of the firewall and how to get into some of the more advanced topics of pfSense. However, as of today the course content is currently a bit dated and some of the setup stuff is skipped or not fully explained which is a bit of a bummer. In my case I had to reset the firewall through serial and and after that there were some startup problems with the initial setup of the LAN, whereas the WAN did connect, but the LAN wasn't working. I did find the answer for this issue in the end, but it would have been nice if this topic would have been covered in the course. Also some new versions of pfSense have been released, after this course was created. Some things have changed like the DHCP server used in this course is deprecated now in version 2.7.2 and there are probably some other improvements. Anyway, I do find the basics pretty solid in this course, and Stefan has a good pace and voice to listen to. Hopefully the course content will grow and be updated at some later stage.

I gave the course a 4 out of 5 because it will get you going with pfSense. It gives a beginning and ability to use basic functionality. I would wish the course to be a couple of hours longer with more details with firewalls giving examples. Say rules that allow to with your Vlans isolated communicate across them using things like a Tivo, Printer, Plex. I know have ideas but and know so much more but if the course was longer on an intermediate course add on that would be great. The teacher did well and he is easy to listen to and follow.

Very succinct and laid-back teacher. Was very comfortable throughout the whole course and was never overwhelmed, even during the tough VLAN and OpenVPN sections. Personally I had some trouble using OpenVPN and Squid proxies on my local system but this was due to having to use a Bridged VirtualBox network instead of NAT. Even so, I still understood the concepts and am confident that I can get them running on actual hardware. Thank you Stefan!

God introduction to the basics of the pfSense firewall. I have used pfSense for a few years now, but had never explored many f the options. I particularly enjoyed the VLAN lessons as this is an area I hope to make use of in my home environment

Excellent, it is great that Stefan has taken the time to revisit new versions and update the course, I find that a lot of courses on Udemy do not get the relevant updates and this can lead to confusion. Great work Stefan :-) I'm at the half way stage :-)

I have been following Stefan's YouTube channel for many years and I always liked his beginner-friendly approach. There are so many people out there who leave important steps out because they assume you know how to do it, but Stefan always goes the whole 10 yards with his tutorials and he leaves no steps out. I was looking forward to his pfSense course from the moment he announced it and I am not disappointed. The course is very thorough and at the same time beginner-friendly. I had to install a pfSense firewall for a client with a small business and I actually used this course to run through the installation. Thumbs up, I'm looking forward to the next course!

This course was really helpful to understand pfSense without having any prior experience with firewalls. Stefan is explaining this topic in a very approachable and easy-to-understand way. I just wanted to install a pfSense firewall for my own home network and I had no problem doing it by following this course. I feel like I've learned everything I need to know to know my way around the firewall. Great course, looking forward to the next one.
