The Spring-Boot Crash Course (Udemy.com)
Learn how to build your first Spring-Boot REST API from scratch with a compact 1 hour Crash-Course

Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,077 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.
Cosmin Ionita's course builds one small thing: a Spring Boot REST API that stores users in MySQL, runs that database in Docker, and pulls extra data from an external HTTP API. The syllabus shows 10 lectures in 4 sections, about 85 minutes, with no quizzes or exercises. It expects basic Java and little else. One reviewer who knows the language was glad it skipped the OOP refresher other framework courses insist on. About 5,000 students have taken it.
Most reviewers like the pace and the focus. Words like concise, crisp and to the point show up again and again, and several say it works as either a first look or a quick refresher. 924 of the 1,077 ratings are four or five stars. The complaints are consistent too. The instructor moves fast, and one reviewer could not tell what was being added or deleted. Another found complex topics thin and the ending abrupt, with a promise of a next lesson. A third spotted code that changed between lectures. One wanted a GitHub repo.
The bigger issue is age. The course was last updated in November 2022, and a recent reviewer says the videos use Spring Boot starter 2.7 while the current release is 4.0.1, so following along may fail. Treat it as a map of how the pieces fit together, then check current versions yourself. It is paid, but at 85 minutes the commitment is small. Recommended for Java developers who want an overview fast. Anyone wanting a full course with projects and practice should look elsewhere.
Pros
- Short enough to finish in one evening, about 85 minutes across 10 lectures
- Builds a working REST API that uses MySQL in Docker and calls an outside HTTP API
- Skips the Java and OOP refresher, which one experienced reviewer appreciated
- Reviewers call it concise and clear as a first look or a refresher
Cons
- Last updated November 2022, and one reviewer says the Spring Boot 2.7 code breaks on current versions
- Fast typing and little explanation of complex topics, so it is hard to follow along live
- No quizzes, exercises or GitHub repo, and the last lecture ends abruptly
Short and crisp! The course covered the basics clearly and gave me a good starting point. Thank you!
Basic Java is assumed. Reviewers say it does not hand-hold, so true beginners may struggle at this pace.

Course Description
Intro
This course is everything you need to get started with Spring-Boot framework in Java, which is the most popular JVM-based web framework for building microservices and backend systems, used by many big-tech companies.
Java is a really great language and provides a number of features out of the box, but if you want to build a REST API in pure Java, it might not be so straight-forward.
For this reason, developers have created frameworks that allows you to build APIs fast, with best-practices in terms of code design and performance/efficiency, and Spring-Boot is such a great framework.
Why do you need to learn Spring-Boot Framework?
Spring-Boot is so popular because of the following:
It allows you to create create production-grade applications very fast
It promotes a well designed code-base
It integrates with external systems seamlessly
It has a big open source community that constantly improves it
And many other reasons
Having Spring-Boot in your skillset as a Java developer, will allow you to:
Be more competitive in the job market
Be more productive because you'll read and write code faster (and better) by recognising and applying well-established design patterns embedded into Spring-Boot
Be able to tackle more technical opportunities since many open source projects use Spring-Boot
Overall, this framework will take you a step further in your Software Engineering career and learning it as soon as possible is probably one of the best strategic moves that you can do for developing your technical expertise.
What you will learn in this course
This course is about 1 hour long, but be aware that it is jam-packed with information. In a nutshell, in this course we're going to create a plain REST API that interacts with a MySQL database to store user data, and also with an external HTTP API, to grab some external data.
A non-exhaustive list of things you're going to learn in this course is the following:
What is Spring-Boot and how it compares to a traditional command-line Java application
How can you import Spring-Boot framework in an empty IntelliJ Idea project
How can you find the right Spring dependencies on the web
How can you create a REST Controller and receive some data via HTTP
How can you configure your REST Controller to send data back and follow best practices
How can you create Services in Spring-Boot
How to use Spring-Configuration mechanism
What is Dependency Injection and how does it work
How can you call an external API via HTTP from your application, using a HTTP Client
How can you configure the Jackson deserialization to extract only the data you need
How can you create and configure a MySQL database using Docker
How can you configure a Spring-Boot application to connect and interact with the MySQL database
How can you use Transactions in Spring-Boot to ensure atomic operations on the database
This course is meant to guide you through this framework by showcasing how can you build a simple application that connects to other 2 systems, from an end-to-end perspective. It's highly practical, because this is the best way to learn any new technology, by playing with it as much as possible
To set the right expectations: this is not a complete Spring-Boot course, it doesn't cover all possible configurations and dependencies that Spring-Boot provides. Instead, it's a course highly focused on building an application similar to a microservice, and the main goal is to give you a taste on how Spring-Boot looks as a web framework and what is the developer experience for using it.
Prerequisites for this course
This course is addressed to beginner Java Developers, Computer Science/Engineering students, existing developers that want to learn something new and of course, to anyone who wants to learn Spring-Boot.
The only prerequisites for this course are the following:
IntellIJ IDEA community (free) edition
Basic Java knowledge (classes, interfaces, generics)
Willingness to learn :-)
In the last 2 lectures I'm going to use a terminal and Docker, so if you are familiar with those it will be easier to follow along, but they're not required as I'm explaining any command that I run step-by step.
Thank you for being here and let's jump in the first lecture!

The instructor moves fast and explains everything in a great and direct way. No overcomplicated subjects and tons of code, just the basics, building that wall of knowledge one brick at a time. I think this is awesome!

It was nice crash Spring Boot Course. But we could have a github repo for this lesson.

The course was insightful, but I would have appreciated it more if yo could take some more time to slowly demonstrate where you were typing, where you were adding and deleting and why the code was structured the way it was. As it was, it moved very fast to manually type and follow the instructions.

Nice, concise. I had enough of courses that had to redo all OOP or TDD just to show a framework - finally got something that didn't treat me as a beginner.

This course hit the right spot for a Crash course. Concise and to the point and great refresher and could also serve as a great starting point to get to know springboot Framework.

Not only quick insight into Spring but also additional content about basic Java/Spring App project structure and docker

I needed a quick crash course to get up to date with spring as my company recently moved me onto a spring project. This course did not waste my time and was very effective for the time that was required. Very much appreciate the approach used in teaching here.

Very brief and lacking explanations on complex topics. Course also sort of just ends while saying we'll jump in on the next lesson, feeling as though this is an incomplete course.

This content is not intended for beginners or intermediate learners. Once you are proficient in Spring Boot, you can revisit this to enhance your knowledge

For someone who needs a brief intro to this topic is this course more than suitable. Great explanation, examples and lesson selection. Thanks a lot
