Course Description

Looking to get ECBA®, CCBA®, or CBAP® certified or recertified? - This course qualifies for 5 PD Hours/CDUs!

WHILE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BUSINESS ANALYST ROLE VARY WIDELY FOR EACH ORGANIZATION, THERE IS ONE BA SKILL THEY ALL ASK FOR - THE ABILITY TO ELICIT REQUIREMENTS.

And that is because requirements are at the core of every change, every project. They explain exactly what needs to be created, updated, and accounted for in the solution. Achieving the requirements is ultimately what brings value to the stakeholders and the organization.

But in order to achieve the requirements, you must first know how to elicit them.

We'll start things off by teaching you all about requirements - their levels, their types, and the often confusing terminology utilized to explain them. We'll move into teaching you how to extract and elicit those details using popular elicitation techniques. These techniques can then be utilized to dig deep into the wants and needs of your users, which helps to ensure a successful end solution.

Regardless of whether your project is large or small, in finance or in manufacturing, creating new systems or providing support to a workforce,...Requirements are always at the center, and that is precisely what you are taught in this course.

Your course enrollment includes:

  • 5 hours of high-quality video lectures that break down all the concepts covered into an easy to understand, step-by-step format.

  • A 30-page Student Workbook that will enhance your learning and give you a reference resource after you’ve completed the course.

  • 9 Business Analysis Templates so you have all the tools you need to immediately apply your new skills on the job.

  • 19 Practice Activities and Quizzes to help you retain your learning and give you an opportunity to put your new knowledge to the test.

In addition to all the tools you’ll need to start successfully eliciting requirements, you’ll also get a foot into the industry by way of an industry expert…

I’m not just the instructor who wrote this course, I will also act as both a resource and a mentor to guide you to a long and rewarding career in Business Analysis!

Hello! My name is Jeremy Aschenbrenner, but many know me better as The BA Guide, and I'm happy you are here.

I’m a veteran Business Analyst with thousands of projects completed throughout my career. I've managed business analysis projects for companies in diverse industries including health care, telecom, automotive, transportation, consumer packaged goods, car rental agency, food and beverage, financial services, consulting, and more.

Through personal experience, I quickly learned that business analysis can be confusing and even intimidating. There’s endless business jargon, technical terms, techniques, and methodologies to learn, and countless visual diagrams, artifacts, elicitation sessions, interfaces, and KPIs to wrap your head around. I’ve been there and learned all of that. Many years ago, I also learned a valuable lesson about myself: I really enjoy teaching others. This was the inspiration for The BA Guide.

I think this course is an excellent match for me because the skills of Elicitation are required for my current job role as a Business Systems Analyst.

By Karli Rice on 1/3/2025

Excellent course. I was worried it would be repetitive once into the elicitation techniques but it went through the process and what is different/what to consider for each of the techniques so was helpful rather than repetitive.

By Lisa Santos on 10/30/2024

This is an excellent course. I walked away with plenty of information on how to elicit requirements properly to get the most out of my discussions with stakeholders. There were plenty of examples, practice assignments and quizzes to stimulate my learning. Highly recommend.

By Anonymized User on 9/18/2024

Good course but repetitive. Artefacts and examples were given on elementary concepts but for the main core concepts such as Elicitation techniques no examples or demo's were given. Also for elicitation techniques it would be better to provide demo's and explaining the process for each technique rather than going through the same checklist.

By Megana Vasireddy on 1/11/2024

Instructor Jeremy has explained each elicitation topic in detail with examples. I recommend students take this course as it will be beneficial to learn and project them in the real world as business analysts.

The best and crucial part of this is how it complemented Don Hussey's Udemy courses on intro to Business Analysis (as it relates to requirements elicitation). I also liked that--for each elicitation technique--you logically binned from Preparing to Conducting to Confirming. I used OneNote and colored text to integrate each method into the above three categories so I didn't have redundant notes. In other words, I only noted unique techniques among each of the three methods. Thanks again!

I found the course, very useful to me. I'm not a Business Analysis by trade. I'm Requirements Manager / System Engineer. Good to have an understanding of the Elicitation process steps of the Requirements process. Which will be useful on future project if I'm working with a Business Analysis. Great course with clear presented information.

By Gina Ippolito on 11/24/2022

The instructor repeats himself which does not make the content unique as he goes from section to section. Each section should have depth and present content that hasn't been heard before. I debated finishing the course because I was not gaining new insight regarding requirement elicitation.

By Liliia Emanuilova on 5/13/2021

Thanks for the course. Jeremy is a brilliant teacher. There are a lot of guides, additional materials, tests, practices cases. The lector operates with a clear and professional language. I'm not the beginner in business analysis, but for me this course was pretty helpful.

By Adaobi Ifeachor on 10/25/2020

A really great course. I used this as a refresher ahead of starting a new job, and enjoyed the structure/process that Jeremy brings to the elicitation process. It definitely gives me more confidence to know that I have a process to follow so that I don't forget anything. As a trainer, Jeremy is personable and really engaging. He uses good examples, for the most part. I was also really impressed with a number of the downloadable resources. I can see myself using them for everyday work. I knocked off half a star because there were just a couple of places where I felt I had to ask a question in the course forum because a point wasn't clear enough. For example, what's the difference between a user and a customer. I actually went from pretty certain (before watching the video) to pretty confused (after watching the video)! But, this was a rare thing, that was cleared up in the forum by Jeremy. The strongest parts of the course involved getting us to work through the plan-prepare-conduct-confirm cycle ourselves for a document analysis session. I enjoyed going all the way through the process and getting hands-on with each step. Subsequent examples of the plan-prepare-conduct-confirm cycle were talked through by Jeremy. And, although I took notes, I wish that there had been at least one other example that was more hands on and required us to work all the way through it on our own before turning to the supplied answers. In a future iteration of the course, I hope that Jeremy is able to find a way to add this additional practical work into the course. For example, allowing us to prepare questions for an interview. Seeing a filmed mock interview and working out what the confirmation steps would be afterwards.
