Course Description
Wireshark is the most widely used network capture and protocol analyzer on the market. It is used by IT and Network administrators to troubleshoot network connectivity issues and by Network Security analysts to dissect network attacks. This free and open source application is so widely used in the industry because it works. It is cross platform, meaning that it runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, and FreeBSD.
This course is an introduction to the application and goes over the basics to get you started capturing and analyzing network traffic. It will build your base by explaining the theory behind how networks work and then get you into real-world applications of the software.
In this course you will learn:
- The basics of how networks operate
- How to capture traffic on Wireshark
- How to use display and capture filters
- How to use command line Wireshark to work with large packet captures

Kyle Slosek
Kyle Slosek is a security practitioner with several years of experience in enterprise Information Technology environments. Kyle works for a large IT company based in the D.C. Metro Area and has performed everything from certification and accreditation to penetration testing and forensics. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, a Master of Science in Information Assurance, as well as several industry certifications.
Kyle's interest in computers started at a young age. When he was young, he was fascinated with the family computer and proceeded to build his own with used parts he found lying around or purchased on eBay (ironically, it was named Alexa...long before Amazon's). He was first interested in security after a home server he built was hacked. He was hosting his own website on a old desktop that was lying around when he realized that a hacker had defaced his site. This inspired him to pursue his career in security.

Old and needs updating... This course used Wireshark v1.10.7 which was released in 2014. Wow that is old! Relevancy in training is key, please modernize and update.

The transcript isn't accurate for some of the technical terms. The reference material is basic.

Good so far but still don't even know how to begin using wireshark yet. Hoping the next section is about using it

This course was a solid introduction to Wireshark. While I was not unfamiliar with it beforehand, I was at an early stage and still rather intimidated by the tool, so I needed to build intuition. This course helped a good deal in that respect, and that's all you can ask without getting more extensive examples in which it helps to know a little about a protocol or where a protocol is being illustrated through it.

Great introduction to Wireshark. Starting off with networking basics, the OSI model, and moving into using Wireshark and using tcpdump, as well as how to interpret *some* traces. Has enabled me to confidently use Wireshark in work when diagnosing SSL/TLS handshakes.

Course reviews some of the essential functionality provided by Wireshark. Great if you want to refresh your knowledge for an interview or are just getting into the world of Wireshark. If you are looking for an advanced course on Wireshark, I would recommend reviewing other courses. Enjoy!

Excellent course. I learned a whole lot more quickly from your course than i could from a book. Your style of teaching is wonderful. You should think of creating a course in Networking troubleshooting with Wire shark and TCPDUMP. Very good course form Network Administrators

Kyle, this was a very good introductory course to Wireshark. I've been using it since the Ethereal days. I've also taken several formal Wireshark classes and wanted to review this one before I recommended it to my son. So you will probably be seeing another student with the same name taking the course as I have highly recommended your course. You can't beat the price! Thanks, Steve

This course is a great way to get up and running with wireshark/tshark. The instructor does a good job of making sure the user has an understanding of basic network traffic structure and then takes you all the way through some basic network protocol analysis. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone new to wireshark.

A great Wireshark primer. Shows you the basics of use and provides you with resources you can use to further your own knowledge. Hopefully in the future a more advanced course that focuses on the CLI tools of Wireshark (tshark, mergecap, capinfos, etc) will be available.
