Xamarin Android: Learn to Build Native Android Apps With C# (Udemy.com)

Become a Xamarin Pro Android Developer with C#. Includes Quiz App, Social App, Maps App, Firebase. Build Real World Apps

Created by: Ufinix Academy

Last updated July 2020

Our take

Based on the ratings of 553 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2020. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a native Xamarin.Android course, not Xamarin Forms. The syllabus shows 198 lectures over about 25 hours, with a run of C# basics followed by a stack of apps: a quiz app, a blood donor list built on RecyclerView, a weather tracker that calls an API, a Facebook clone on Firebase, and a maps app. Ufinix Academy's Uchenna Nnodim teaches it, and the requirements say no coding experience is needed, though the audience list assumes some C#. Reviewers who already write C# and want a first mobile project say it fits them best.

Students like the calm, laid-back delivery, the short lectures and the way each app is built step by step. One reviewer says the design and UI sections were a pleasant surprise. The complaints are consistent, though. Later sections, from the Blood Donor app onward, are said to move fast without explaining what the code does. The Firebase chapters trip on AndroidX and Guava package conflicts, and one 2024 review says the downloaded apps no longer work. Multiple reviewers report asking questions in the Q&A and getting no answer, sometimes for weeks. Others wanted code on GitHub and real captions instead of auto-generated ones.

Value depends on the goal. The course was last updated in July 2020, and one reviewer quit because MAUI had arrived and Xamarin felt like yesterday's tool. Three of the four Xamarin courses listed beside it are Xamarin Forms titles, so anyone who specifically needs Android APIs, camera, maps, notifications, from C# will still find them taught here. Expect to fix dependency breakage without help. For shared code across iOS and Android, the Xamarin Forms courses beside it are a better fit.

Best forC# developers who want native Android apps, not Xamarin Forms, and can debug broken NuGet packages on their own.
Skip it ifYou want cross-platform code sharing, Xamarin Forms or MAUI, or you expect the instructor to answer questions.

Pros

  • Calm, step-by-step delivery in short lectures that reviewers find easy to follow
  • Seven real apps, from a quiz app to a Firebase social clone and a Google Maps app
  • Covers native Android APIs from C#: camera, gallery, notifications, maps, Play Store publishing
  • Includes UI design and Adobe XD prototyping, which one reviewer calls a welcome bonus

Cons

  • Last updated July 2020; a 2024 reviewer says the downloadable apps no longer work
  • Firebase sections hit AndroidX and Guava NuGet conflicts that some students never got past
  • Reviewers report unanswered Q&A questions, auto-generated captions only, and no GitHub code
I like this guy's style, he is very calm and laid back. The video quality is a little low, but I can make out what he is doing.
Gordon Moore, a student

Billed as all levels with a C# primer inside, but reviewers say it lands best for people who already know C# and are new to mobile.

It's very good. Note you need to add an import to the MainActivity.cs using Android.Widget; I was expecting Xamarin Forms, but I suspect it will be fairly easy to adapt to that. It may be that this will be better for accessing the bluetooth api in native mode anyway. I like this guy's style, he is very calm and laid back. The video quality is a little low, but I can make out what he is doing.

By Imad Zureiki on 3/21/2021

This amazing course. Step By Step and walkthroughs examples are explained very well. Projects cover huge knowledge areas. What I liked more is the look and feel design concepts which are included in the course although its scope is development. I felt that I'm working in real projects. Keep up and many thanks

By Mark Solomon on 3/4/2021

Great course! This course would have been better except for the broken dependencies/conflicts between AndroidX and Guava. Which will be a a barrier to many for the final quarter of the course. You mess up nuget in anyway, and it may be a redo. This example makes me never want to use Firebase--ever. Too many conflicts that haven't been resolved over years. A better solution would be connecting to Azure SQL Database using a mobile app service and REST APIs. Firestore for Xamarin just sucks.

By Pramod Jacob Sam on 12/31/2020

The course could have been more great, if there would be more explanation for each topics. The contents are great, but explanation is less. For example, there should have been more explanation for shared preference, event handlers, delegates. But overall, the course is good,

100% Love it so far, some of the concepts are hard to grasp for a novice but I suggest taking your time and editing the given examples, this allowed me to see various issues and solve them. Experience is the best teacher!!

By Angel Renato Jimenez on 4/23/2020

I sent the instructor a couple of questions but I have not received any answers so far. I did not finish the Pathfinder app. I followed exactly the instructions on the video but it did not work. Specifically, my issue was the installation of the Google Places API. The instructor needs to update the course so that students would not have a hard time following.

By Ernest J on 12/31/2019

The instructor is pacing this course adequately and is clear in his explanations. Every detail of designing the XAML based UIs are explained. I have not experienced a better course on Xamarin based mobile app development!

By Antone Eason on 12/28/2019

No course compares to this course for Xamarin Android. I am amazed more students are not taking this course. When you consider all the program projects that teach and utilize programming techniques that push the finished app to professional level quality, again no comparison!!! BOOM!!!!!!!

By Core RHCE on 11/30/2019

Very easy to understand and follow along but some items could be explained a little bit more thoroughly. Although it gives you a good training on researching some functions etc on your own and you get familiar in finding answers on the internet with google and stack overflow etc. I would recommend this course for absolute beginners with a couple hours playing around with some C# code so you at least get an understanding of the basics.

By Ashik on 10/4/2019

Xamarin dev seemed like a complicated thing. Author included several apps as examples in class. He could have taken an easy path. He taught most things all I needed to build applications. I wish I could give him more than 5 star ratings.
