Course Description

Many students become anxious at the prospect of having to write an essay or term paper. They don't understand the conventions for organizing essays, and they don't know how to manage their time and the writing process.

The result is that many students enter college without the skills necessary to succeed simply because they were never properly taught how to write essays.

This course aims to overcome this problem by offering a systematic framework for essay writing that removes the mystery and presents a clear path for moving from idea to outline to completed first draft.

A STRUCTURED APPROACH TO SUCCESSFUL ESSAY WRITING

The most efficient way to improve your essay writing is to focus on the key structural features that define successful writing at the essay level. An essay can be written beautifully, but if it's missing key structural elements (like a well defined thesis statement), it will fail as an essay.

This course provides a set of concepts and tools for thinking about, analyzing and fixing problems with the structural elements of your essay.

CONTENTS AND OVERVIEW

Students in this course will learn how essay writing skills are related to "deep reading" and "deep thinking" skills, and why this is increasingly important in today's world. You will also learn how standards of good essay writing are related to standards of good written communication more broadly. You'll learn why academic essays are structured the way they are, how essay style is related to essay structure, how to approach the writing process, and how to organize your time so that you can actually get the work done before the deadline.

But the centerpiece of the course is two detailed case studies. In one of them I take a short student essay that has some serious problems, analyze the structural issues and rewrite that essay from start to finish.

In another case study I take an actual essay assignment from an actual college class, that I don't teach, and take that essay from initial brainstorming and researching to a detailed outline to a completed first draft with a reference list and inline reference citations.

At the end of this course you will feel more confident about your ability to successfully complete essay assignments in school, and you will have a greater understanding of the skills and habits of successful writers.

nice course good explanations and eye catching essay topics which got me focused into the course. I did not give 5 stars because right now how AI has evolved i see people using it to fix their essays and make it do the work for them even write their essays, the course should have elaborated on how to use AI in essay writing.

As a person who's written a few essays in the past but have forgotten almost everything I learnt, this course taught me more than what was taught at school. He goes over pretty everything you need to know on essay writing. Such as: different writing styles, avoiding plagiarism and writers block, how to cite references, how to provide logical arguments in your essay, how to write effective introductions and conclusions and so much more. I'm looking forward to redoing the course in the future. Thanks, a lot.

Funny how this course talks about the structure of the essay but the headline of the topic is NOT so Structured. CONS: 1. initially i had a hard time being convinced how practical this course is, i guess let’s forget about session1-2, summarize session 3 to one sentence. And optimize the session title plz! 2. In addition, i have a hard time to comprehend the session title and structure an outline in my mind, due 1) it is an question 2) it is long so not so readable as chapter outline 3) unclear about the logic (i cannot easily connect each subtitles). This result in me not being able to take efficient notes initially. PROS: 1. Although it is lengthy and some initial content could be cut, i love the anxiety management part because it has been the primary cause of me being stuck in the discovery mode. 2. Understand the writing process IS VERY USEFUL so I do not blame myself using half of time collecting evidence, organize my thoughts. FACT that collecting thoughts is a necessity. Understanding the procedure of writing also in reverse helps soothing the anxiety of not getting papers done. OVERALL THE CONTENT IS REALLY GOOD SO FAR. DO APPRECIATE A GOOD WRITER SHARIN THE SKILL BUT WISH THE CHAPTER OUTLINE IS MORE LOGICAL AND LESS LENGTHY. Update: This course lost me after 40% so I simply could not progress I tried to get refund but I noticed I returned a wrong course… I have to say the scrivener was useful but the lengthy repetitive communication style from the author kills me in 5 mins.

Extremely impressed so far, I only watched about 15 mins of video but Kevin’s way of thinking is very much to my liking. He covers all aspect of a topic with very thorough thinking and understanding. No wonder he is an academic in philosophy. It’s the kind of thinking that I am always trying to do myself, with varying success. So I have great confidence that Kevin will pave the way for me to acquire the necessary skills I need for deep writing and more. Even supporting my deep thinking and deep reading. Update: As expected, Kevin delivers consistently great material, and extremely helpful in getting an overview/feel of what a great essay writing/written communication should be. Thanks Kevin for your hard work!

The content of the course is very helpful to me. Dr. deLaplante offered an excellent pointers in improving communication skills through writing. The elements that are essentials in an essay writing and how this essay help someone to be a deep thinker. Of course, this course does not claim that people who are not deep thinkers will not be able to communicate well.

Yes it was quite helpful, except it focused more on online documents and how one can use them which wasn't what I was really looking for. Though it inspired and helped me in many ways. For instance, it brushed up on my argumentative skills and gave me knowledge about the discovery and presentation styles which I could use in future

Highly useful and interesting points for good essay writing have been mentioned by the author. He represents a rigorous and meticulous approach to essay writing There is a lot of repetition of the same statement and idea by the author but the reason he does so is to emphasize and reiterate the core idea - this will be better understood as one goes through the entire program on the video. For individuals who often communicate with colleagues in English in a cross cultural environment - especially if the colleague/counterpart is a native English speaker, this course can be very useful. The course in insightful, engaging and worth it. I will definitely recommend it .

I have enjoyed this course and the author's presentation of the material. Been over 30 years since college and wanted to take this course to refresh what I never knew or never taught. I believe that I am hearing and seeing information that I wish I had known back in high school almost 50 years ago. I am now retired and want to begin writing about my move to Costa Rica and what a great retirement I am living. Thank you Kevin.

This is a nice course. It's clear Kevin knows about what is doing. Certainly the recycled material is not very nice, but it's not that terrible either. I really liked the exercises to redo the essay, and the one it wrote from the scratch. Those were awesome exercises to understand. This course has an awesome balance between theory and practice. I would love to have a follow up course.

By Cynthia Coomb-Smith on 3/12/2016

I enjoy every aspect of the course. What I learned is the importance of writing an essay the correct way, in terms of proper structure and the different writing styles. Many students who are entering college should take advantage of this course. It would help them tremendously. I would definitely recommend this course to others.
