Course Description
WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT?
Is evolution a theory, a fact, or both? This question has been debated by critics and defenders of evolution for many years.
Some claim that evolution is a theory, not a fact. Others claim that evolution is a fact, not a theory. And still others say that evolution is both a theory and a fact.
What exactly is going on here?
One reason why the debate persists is that people disagree not only on the strength of the evidence for evolution, but also on the meanings of the key terms, “theory” and “fact”.
This course is designed to help you understand and think critically about debates like these, debates about the nature of science that turn on the meanings of scientific terms like “theory”, “fact”, “law”, “hypothesis” and “model”.

Just follow this course, if you have something to do with science, in the broadest sense of the term and disciplines, either academic or even only informative, the notions explained are essentials. Very hig level of teaching skills of the instructor. Highly recommended

I appreciate the clarity and relatability, and I'm excited about the material because I've got a few pandemic deniers in my circle, and I want some tools to be able to not tear them apart. I could go through the material a lot faster than the lecture. I'd love to have the written version instead for this reason, but I like the visuals. FYI, I found out about this course in a FB group I'm on called "Massage, Health Care, and COVID-19," where the admin. recommends everyone take this class.

This course is very useful for science enthusiasts. It provides me a new perspective of scientific education and science practice. I also think it should be part of academic training. Though the content of the course is very helpful, there are only a few resources to practice and apply the understanding of topics of each lecture. I really hope that there will be more practice materials for your other courses. Thank you.

As part of preparation for an Open University science course in October, I took part in an open online lecture on scientific writing. This included a section describing the difference between loaded and neutral writing. In what I have seen so far, I believe this course will strengthen my knowledge on these matters.

I love this course. I am an enthusiast for anything to do with science and philosophy so this is a great course for that. Also, I aspire to be a skeptic and critical thinker. Thus, this course is perfect. Anyone who wants to know more about science and how it's terms are defined, this is the course for you!

I profited immensely from this course, because as a former professor of mine once stated “if you can command the language of a subject, then it becomes possible for you to comfortably function and contribute within the domain of that subject. This course is probably going require a few passes to become versed in this subject, but I think it will be well worth the effort. Note, I’m writing this after my first pass, but I intend to make a few more passes because intellectual discipline and honesty is important to me.

This course in the vocabulary of science will enhance your understanding of the world around you through semantics, empiricism, epistemology and philosophy of science. The instructor is one of the best that I have ever seen in explaining scientific principle basics core function though simple analogies. This course is a must for everyone.

This course was a very good surprise ! Despite my background in engineering I had the opportunity to learn about concepts which I didn't knew that I didn't knew them. I appreciated the illustrative examples and the tests as well. Looking forward for the announced sequence. Great job, Mr Laplante.

This is a really excellent course, and I am looking forward to future courses in this series. The instructor does a great job of digging into significant science literacy issues without requiring a college-level philosophy background as a prerequisite. (I particularly liked the instructor's treatment of the description-versus-explanation question in science.) Moreover, the instructor does all this without either over-simplifying the issues or insulting anyone, which are problems I see a lot in material aimed at boosting science literacy.
