Course Description
This follow-on course will improve your guitar playing.
I will show you:
- how to read TAB
- exactly where to place your fingers to play finger-style guitar
- how to decide what rhythm to use in a song
- how to play chords of A, A7, A7sus4, B7, D7, Dsus2, Dsus4, E7, Em7, F, Fmajor7, G6
- more complex strumming patterns
- how to pick individual notes using a plectrum
- how to use a capo
- techniques hammer-ons and pull-offs
The videos follow a carefully designed order to help you improve quickly. The course is divided into sections, the first dealing with improving your rhythm by introducing more complex strumming patterns using various songs while also introducing new chords. The next section gets you started reading TAB and learning the basics of finger-style guitar. And the final section takes a look at some more advanced techniques such as hammer-ons and pull-offs.
During the videos any chords that are being used will appear onscreen and there are video inlays to give you a closer look at what my left-hand fingers are doing. For lessons on finger-style and picking there are also video inlays that will show you a close-up of the right hand. A visual representation of the strumming patterns and for finger-style songs TAB will also be shown onscreen where necessary.
The strumming patterns and chord sequences are included as supplemental materials so they can be downloaded and studied separately from the videos.
The course should take approx. 10-15weeks to complete but that will depend on the amount of time you are able to dedicate to practicing the guitar. If you can only practice for an hour at the weekend it could take considerably longer than if you can practice on a more regular basis.
To put the cost into perspective, a 10 week group class in the school where I teach would cost approx. $210 and it would be unlikely to cover half the amount of material featured in this course.

I have been involved in the music business for many years. At the age of eight I joined the Artane Boys Band, where I received a great introduction into the world of music, learning how to play the clarinet, oboe and the bell lyre. When I left this marching band (which is compulsory at age 16) I discovered the guitar and began the next phase of my musical journey playing rock, pop and blues in various bands in Dublin. Looking for a further challenge I decided to study classical guitar in which I have earned both an Associated Board ABRSM diploma and a Licentiate LTCL diploma. Along the way I worked in different music shops, where I got the opportunity to try other instruments and ended up also learning banjo, mandolin and bodhran. I taught guitar, banjo, mandolin and music technology at Waltons New School Of Music in Dublin 2003-2017 and have also given lessons at several Dublin-area primary schools through Waltons In-School Music Programme. I am currently teaching guitar in Waterford.

Very nice approach on guitar teaching. Easy to follow and a lot of evolution steps that make you feel that you are evolving. I recommend it to everyone that is learning!

Absolutely wonderful instruction-had just completed the basic course and moved on to this course--excellent instructor continues to present an even paced step by step method of instruction--very clear descriptions -- lots of visual reinforcement along with the auditory--I am learning a lot!!!

Beginners, this is a great stumming instruction. Its a nice and SLOW (an overlooked) approach to practice and learning.

I would love to revisit the course whenever feel any lacking on my part. Wonderfully taught. My favourite being the Radio Head's Street Spirit lesson.

I like the course. I just wish he would go over the whole sequence before we play along

Excellent. I loved the Basics course and this moves on from that nicely. I've looked at the finger picking videos but it's beyond me at the moment. Once again a great choice of songs to learn. Thanks.

I started taking acoustic guitar lessons when I was fourteen and gave up before becoming 15. Some good twenty years later I decided to finally face the challenge and go for it. Instead of hiring private guitar lessons, I started over with Acoustic Guitar Basics and soon I purchased Acoustic Guitar After the Basics because I appreciate Francis' method. I have been practicing between 20 and 40 minutes every single day. Each lesson is a new challenge and it is really exciting to see myself progressing. I'd recommend it to anyone who's serious about learning guitar

I love the lesson structure and how each lesson begins easy, ends with more difficulty and offers numerous variations in each lesson. ((play and re-play....leave it for a while and come back to re-play)

I had no hesitation in buying this course after I had completed basic course. I find Francis clear and sympathetic in his approach to the lessons. I don't really want this course to end and I hope Francis will go on to do some more courses so I can keep going. I think this is the best acoustic guitar programme I have found on line for a long time and I thank you for the trouble you have taken to produce such a good package. Scarlet
