Advanced SQL Server Performance Tuning (Udemy.com)

The course was good overall and there are some gems in here that are very useful. Although most of these topics apply, there have been some changes in SQL Server with new versions that might show different or better results. The only part that I did not like was many of quiz questions did not seem to be covered in the videos.

Good in general, but the sound has to be improved in some of the lessons. Also there is a lession when rows are mentioned while actually the video is referring to columsn (this is the video when analyzing if the number of rows in a query matters). This video also just pay attention to logical reads, so it says there is no performance impact in including all the fields instead of including just the needed ones. I think it should take into account also the quantity of data retrieved and sent to the network to the client, or whatever this query is used for (if it is used to create a temporary table, more writes will be needed because the width of the row will be greater) Also there is a video at the end with a big pause as if the speaker is thinking and improvising. I think in a course video this should be avoided. The video can be edited so remove those gaps or mistakes.

I'm amazed at how much I was able to learn in a 90 minute course. He goes very quick and not super in depth, but that was the point of the course. I was able to take several pages of notes that I know will help my company greatly.

It's not what I thought it would be. It covers limited topics and does not present a solid step by step approach to approaching a SQL server you've never had a dealing with and finding the performance issues and fixing them.

This is the 9th Mike West course I have taken. The dude really know his stuff and is able to relay to the listener in a very approachable way. Quick note if you do the exercises yourself - you want to give SQL Server time to "catch up". For instance the T1117 did not appear to be working as Mike demoed but ran the batch insert statement 3x SQL Server did even out the files as Mike demo'd. The same thing happened on the Implicit Conversion procedure. Looking forward the rest of his courses.

It's not a course but a list of tips and some explanations however far from the impression created by the course title. Coverage on intricacies of indexes was felt missing. Other topics were also just touched upon. It's good for those who already know a lot but not who really wants tackle performance tuning challenges.

So far, it seems a little scattershot; not quite sure how the separate topics are supposed to fit together. Also, lots of detail, but most of it isn't presented visually - the accompanying video of a hand drawing lines between circles and boxes isn't adding much. And just now, we looked at the results of a SQL query, but the query wasn't shown, and I can't seem to reproduce the output in the example using the "code" verbally (but not visually) presented. The topics were great, if a bit isolated. I didn't mind that, but I wouldn't say this presented a plan of attack for SQL Server Performance Tuning - more like a grab bag of tricks and techniques. I learned a lot, which is probably the ultimate positive, but I'll still be looking for some guidance on how to actually approach SQL Performance Tuning in a systematic way. I'd say in general, this material would give you a list of things to try if you had no idea where to start. I don't think it would help much if you were looking for either a symptom -> resolution approach or a "Let's improve the performance of this particular database" approach.

A good course with information and tips that apply to the real world. SQL Server is a complex product and this course won't equip you to deal with all the many root causes why real world Production environments suffer from performance problems, so if you're looking for something very in depth that covers the full breadth of SQL Server, this is not the course for you. The performance tuning tips and insights are more slanted towards individual query tuning in databases running OLTP workloads I would say (rather than OLAP workloads you have in data warehouse applications). Nonetheless, I found the course enlightening and practical, and I recommend it for anyone who wants to get a handle on troubleshooting performance issues in SQL Server for ad hoc queries, stored procedures, views, etc.

Another good course from Mike. You need to be very comfortable with basic SQL Server performance tuning concepts to get the best from this course though. From being basically a SQL developer who tries his hand at the DBA stuff because no-one else wants to risk screwing it up, I feel like I am on the way to being a DBA one day, thanks to Mike's courses.

This is the third of Mike's courses that I've taken and I really appreciate every one of them. He uses clear cut examples to illustrate real world scenarios. Mike is one of the few SQL Server instructors that seems very focused on performance issues and I'm really glad to have stumbled onto his courses. I encourage everyone who needs a better understanding of sql performance issues to take full advantage of this course as well as Mike's other courses "How to Become a World Class SQL Server Performance Tuner" and "How to Solve SQL Server Outages"... Thanks for another great course Mike, much appreciated!
