Course Description
A Comprehensive Course for Learning How to Build and Query Big Data OLAP Cubes Using Apache Kylin.
Apache Kylin is an Apache top-level project that bring OLAP to Big data. This simply means that we can now write complex aggregation queries with different levels of aggregation and expect to get a second or micro-seconds response to our query.
Online analytical processing (OLAP) has been a common word in traditional business intelligence for years but has not been easy with hadoop platform that has become a data lake solution for many. These data lake often have hundreds of millions and even billions of records that organizations want to slice and dice for insights. However, the high latency of query execution in SQL on Hadoop technologies like Apache Hive or Apache Drill often meant that data architect opted to transfer their data back to traditional systems that allow for real time response to query.
Kylin solves all of this.
With Apache Kylin, anyone with the skills can now build OLAP, ROLAP or MOLAP structures using a web UI, deploy it and expect to query these structure with second of response time in mind. Also, one can connect their applications or favorite visualization tools to Kylin to integrate data either for system processing or for visualization.
In this course, we are going to review
- What Kylin is
- How it works
- How to build OLAP cubes in batch and streaming model
- How to deploy the cubes
- How to query cubes
- How to connect external tools and applications to Kylin
What is the target audience?
Big Data Engineers/Developers
Data Architects
Data Analysts.
Anyone who wishes to be able to write simple to complex aggregation queries of large dataset and wants a low latency response time.
What are the requirements?
You need access to a Big Data Sandbox like Cloudera quickstart VM, Hortonworks HDP sandbox or a cloud-based Hadoop environment with a least 10GB of Ram.
You should have some familiarity SQL and be able to use ODBC or JDBC based tools.
Some familiarity with Linux will be helpful
What do I need to know to get the best out of this course?
Because Kylin uses other hadoop projects to achieve its design a fair understanding of projects like Apache Hive, Apache Kafka, Apache HBase, MapReduce is great for this course. However, one can still use Kylin without any knowledge of these technologies.
It is also worth knowing that no prior knowledge of any big data technology is required to query Kylin or use data integration in running report or data visualizations.

I think if the conference has used the official docker image, it may be easier to construct and configure the environment. I had to spend a few hours configuring it all.

Very good getting started guide to kylin. in few sections, having one or two slides would help, for example, a write up while explaining architecture and various dependencies. Overall, its a good course and I was able to use some of the techniques in my demo project.

November 2020: I started this course a week ago and currently I'm exploring section 3. The course is very , very valuable for anybody which needs to know and implement OLAP cubes using Kylin. I eagerly want to say is awesome but I will first end the course and then I will update this rating. The only thing I see (and the course has nothing to do with it) is the scenario is changing so fast, that it is very difficult to implement the course as it is. Using the HortonWorks VM leads in many, many unexpected issues (like permissions issues, performance issues with memory and several needed configurations adjustments). Also the VMs requires a generous amount of RAM and a good processor. Don't expect follow the course with a computer with 8GB ram, since 16GB should be the absolute minimum. Also a multi-core cpu is desired, even you can use a less powered computer, even though the cubes will take a while to be generated. The cloudera VM is not offered any longer as download, only hortonworks and the current VMs are HUGE (downloads are about 20GB or more). The other issue is the video has horrendous subtitles, the automatic translation is an aberration. Luckily, the teacher is easy to follow and speaks very clearly.

Really good course, presenting very well all the things. Maybe some presentation files would help having 5 instead of 4.5 rating. Or maybe I just couldn't find them yet. Very good script, presenting real work live - denotes very good knowledge of the tools and BI domain. I'm very happy I took this course.

The explanation to each of the components in the framework were explained gracefully. The Q&A section helped me get answers to my queries. The use cases helped me gain insights onto what actually happens in the back-end. The tutor is very passionate about the subject and will make sure that the students understand the concepts.

Very detailed and stepwise explanations provided in a simple manner. Particularly appreciate the subtle yet effective way of showing possible errors and how to get around them !

Course not organized. Moderator jumps from one way of doing things to something totally different without explaining/showing how to follow. Very difficult to stay up with the course. There's been times when it will take me days to figure out some settings and make all technology work together.

Due to some professional requirement, I was searching for some training in apache Kylin, There are not many online courses available, but this course is really well formatted with exercises and you will be able to understand the concepts clearly. BTW, this is the first course I have completed in udemy even though I have subscribed for a couple of others.

Very nice tutorial on how to get started with Kylin! Although it is sometimes hard to understand and the transcript is very off (probably due to auto transcripting), I still recommend this course for anyone looking to get familiarized with Kylin.
