Course Description

Take a comprehensive dive into the world of API First development using Spring 6 and Spring Boot 3. This extensive course covers the latest practices and tools for designing, building, and testing robust APIs following industry best practices.

You'll begin by understanding the foundational concepts of API-first development and its benefits for organizations. The course then guides you through the practical implementation of an API using OpenAPI specifications, domain-driven design principles, and code generation from OpenAPI specifications.

Throughout the course, you'll explore a wide range of topics, including:

  • Defining APIs using the OpenAPI specification and tools like Redocly

  • Using Redocly to establish CI/CD builds for your OpenAPI Specification and Redoc API Documentation

  • Applying domain-driven design principles for effective API design

  • Generating code from OpenAPI specifications using Maven with OpenAPI Code Generator

  • Developing Spring Boot and SpringMVC to implementing API endpoints

  • Testing APIs with Spring MockMVC and incorporate request validation to your OpenAPI Specification

  • Implementing create, update, patch, and delete operations for APIs

  • Object-relational mapping with JPA, Hibernate

  • Using MapStruct for efficient object mapping and type transformation

  • Enforcing data validation and constraints with JPA and Java Bean Validation

  • Handling standardized problems and errors with libraries like Zalando Problem

  • Generation of Spring Boot API clients and using clients with integration testing

Throughout the course, you'll work on a real-world e-commerce API project, applying the concepts and best practices learned in each section. By the end of this course, you'll have a deep understanding of API-first development using Spring 6 and Spring Boot 3 with OpenAPI, enabling you to design, build, and test robust APIs that adhere to industry standards.

John Thompson

Hi. I'm John.

I've been in the IT industry for over 25 years. Today, I specialize mainly in Java, the most successful and widely known programming language in use today. I also specialize with the Spring Framework, which the most popular open source application framework for building enterprise class applications on the Java platform. Just some of the organizations I've worked with include Visa, Kohls, Federal Home Loan Bank, and Belk Department Stores.

Through the courses I'm providing, I hope to leverage my years of experience to accelerate your learning of the Spring Framework. I'm not going to lie to you. The Spring Framework is a big framework. The environment for enterprise Java is even bigger. If you're new to Java, you have a lot to learn. I hope through the content on this web site I can accelerate your education of the Java and Spring landscape.

This is a great course! As a decades long user of Maven and Java I have taken advantage of "tribal knowledge" of Spring API and Open API Specifications. I highly recommend this course to those approaching API first development. As an engineer that has been a user of JHipster, this course is a must to understand Spring and JHipster Microservices for junior and mid-level engineers. John's Open API course is a great compliment. I'm holding back half a star for the Redocly stuff. I worked around it, leveraging that "tribal knowledge." I used it's tooling for linting, but abandoned the online portion. I also was able to upgrade to 3.1 with the updates to the Atlassian libraries since the creation of this course and use the Swagger Next Docker images to test and view the OAS throughout the course. Maybe time for some updates.

Unfortunately I could not follow the course, by coding along site, because a part of it is dependent on Redocly, wich I did not have an account and wich is not free, Neverless the inforamtion are very useful and I continue without coding. It is still a very nice Course

I always like Jon Thompson courses. He is a good teacher and the content that he publishes is always very valuable

The explanations and assignments were good, as they provided a great tool for practice, but I must say that the course is a bit outdated regarding its first part, when it comes to the Redocly service, as it is no longer free or resembles anything shown in the video. I could not host my OpenAPI files and had to look up how to use them locally for the code generation. I would've appreciated a small update or an alternative way on how to do it! The rest of the course was fine, I must say.

The course covers a wide range of useful topics, it's well explained. There are many assignments that make it possible to put into practice the different topics.

Great course to learn more how to build API first application (previously I worked only with swagger - aka openapi 2.0): 1) integrataion with redocly - PaaS for documentation; 2) covered in needed details maven openapi plugin to generate both model and client; 3) atlassian swagger validator - nice but a bit too slow; 4) problem response explained on practical example usage - zalando What I would improve: 1) a bit too much hibernate and mapstrcut mappings (I mean probably 75% of assignments time took hibernate and mapping); 2) I expected to see some contract testing - e.g. spring cloud contract; 3) Will be nice to say few words how to build standalone documentation - in some cases it can be useful. Thanks John for your job - looking forward for more interesting cources (where I have knowledge gaps).
