Course Description

This course offers a beginner-friendly introduction to Terraform, covering the basics of the Terraform CLI and HashiCorp Configuration Language (HCL) in a cloud-agnostic way. You’ll learn how to set up Azure using the “azurerm” provider, starting with configuring a storage account for remote state management. Next, you’ll build a local runner (or script) that makes it easier to manage multiple environments directly from your own workstation. Then, you’ll set up key DevOps infrastructure, including Azure KeyVault for secret management and Azure Monitor for observability, capturing logs and metrics to ensure your deployments run smoothly.

Leading you through these topics is Mark Tinderholt, currently a Principal Architect at Microsoft Azure. Mark brings a highly practical perspective drawn from over 25 years of real-world experience in software development, technology consulting, and leading teams. He has worked on everything from data center migrations to microservices architecture and multi-tenant SaaS solutions, all while driving DevOps culture at organizations both large and small. Because he’s not a typical “professional trainer,” but rather a veteran industry practitioner, his instruction is hands-on and focused on real-world scenarios. This approach makes learning both intuitive and immediately applicable to modern infrastructure challenges, ensuring that you gain the skills to succeed in today’s fast-paced Cloud and DevOps landscape.

As you progress, you’ll create an Azure Virtual Network and deploy a Linux Virtual Machine, exploring various connectivity options such as SSH and Azure Bastion. We'll also enable Entra ID Authentication and explore how to automate Entra ID using the "azuread" Terraform Provider. Finally, we'll look at the "other" Azure Terraform provider--the "azapi" Terraform Provider which unlocks Day Zero Support for new Azure services and features.

Throughout the course, you’ll pick up best practices for structuring your Terraform code, handling multiple environments, and maintaining a reliable infrastructure as code workflow. By the end, you’ll have a strong grasp of Terraform fundamentals and Azure essentials—perfect if you’re just starting out with either technology or if you’re looking to solidify your cloud infrastructure skills. With Mark’s guidance, you’ll gain the confidence to design and deploy repeatable, scalable infrastructure on Azure using Terraform.

Very good course. I never touched Terraform before this course. But it was easy to get going and get an understanding of what Terraform is and how to use it. I miss some explanation on how to automate Terraform with Azure DevOps, so i have to find another course that can help with that. Overall good course - can recommend :)

Learning module is very precise to help beginners understand IaC and terraform. Its very easy to understand as the lectures make a gradual progression for each of the concepts of terraform and Azure RM. I feel like a section can be added to understand terraform modules, which would give a learning experience to show how to terraform code organized based on the cloud resources getting provisioned.

Really liked it the way it went and lot of confidence after completing this course & good with handson as well.

As a legacy C# developer I'd had no exposure to cloud-based technologies before so I took this course to give me a grounding in the use of Terraform with Azure with no real prior knowledge of either platform. Now I can confidently perform some basic tasks such as standing up a VM and now know how to interpret HCL and where to go find out more, if necessary.

In 2026/04 is still good but Mr jumps sometime between files... We was able to DESTROY but then at next steps we had to use 'destroyed' resources .... Anyway, recreation, revalidation was with this much better for beginner. Btw 'azure free tier vm machines' was not availabe in westus3, I had to switch to westeurope and use Standard_B2ts_v2 to save any 'free' penny from free tier!

I had no experience with Terraform or Azure before the course. I really liked Mark’s pace—he explained everything from the ground up and gradually moved into more advanced topics. I also enjoyed his clear English and sense of humor. I appreciated the hands-on approach as well. Between the exercises and a bunch of “side quests” while exploring Azure and Terraform, I ended up spending a full five days on what’s billed as a 12-hour course. Azure doesn’t feel nearly as scary anymore. For future experiments I’ll stick with the azurerm provider. azapi looks powerful, but all those large JSON blobs in the configuration are a bit intimidating for me right now.

Despite Mark saying at the start he is not a trainer, he does a very good impression of one! He is clear and to the point. I have been in IT infra for 25 years and working with Azure for the last 5. I was very much of the mindset that coding is for the coders not for us infrastructure folks. I also believed I didn't have the right aptitude for it. This course helped change my opinion on that and will help me help my organization adopt Terraform across the board. You might want to watch some of the sections a couple of times before it clicks. Highly recommend however. Thanks Mark

The instructor is knowledgeable about the course content. The instructor also seems to have passion for the topic, which results in engaging video content. The lessons are presented in a well-planned, and structured manner. These lessons reflect the real-world challenges and responses that occur in the Terraform business world.

This is one of the best Terraform courses I’ve taken. It’s structured perfectly to help anyone truly understand the Terraform workflow, especially in an Azure context. The hands-on approach, clear explanations, and logical progression from basics to real-world scenarios make it easy to follow and apply in practice. Bonus points for the memorable Indiana Jones moment — replacing the gold with a sandbag — which made the concept stick and added a fun twist to the learning. Highly recommended for anyone starting with Terraform or looking to solidify their fundamentals.
