Our take
Based on the ratings of 7,598 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.
A free, four-hour introduction to Arduino from Core Electronics, the Australian maker shop run by Graham, a former air force avionics technician. The 34 lectures walk from setup through inputs and outputs, logic, data handling and EEPROM, then libraries and serial data, ending with a short section on where to go next. It is aimed squarely at people with no programming or electronics background, and reviewers with exactly that profile, including one fourth grader, say it made the link between code and hardware click. With around 119,000 students and a 4.6 rating from roughly 7,600 reviews, the numbers are strong for a free course.
Students praise the clear, practical explanations and the hands-on exercises, and one says he got a lot more than the basics he expected. The complaints are specific, though. The whole thing stays with LEDs and breadboard basics, so people hoping for sensors or a proper project come away wanting more. One reviewer found the pace fast and couldn't find the project materials. Another says the I2C and SPI lectures are thinner than a YouTube video on the same topic, and a third flags a couple of points as plainly wrong. Loud background music, the accent, and ads also draw the odd complaint.
The course was last updated in March 2018 and has not been revised since, though the C basics and wiring haven't changed. Next to Arduino Step by Step: Getting Started or the Hackster fundamentals course, this is the shorter, free taster. It's worth a weekend if you want to find out whether Arduino is for you before paying for something longer. Plan to move on to a course with more sensors and projects afterwards.
Pros
- Clear, practical explanations that tie code to what the hardware is doing, praised by kids and adults alike
- Goes further than most free intros: logic, data types, EEPROM, serial data and libraries in 34 lectures
- Free, with a 4.6 rating from about 7,600 reviews and around 119,000 students
- Taught by a working maker shop that also publishes videos on YouTube, which is how at least one reviewer found it
Cons
- Last updated March 2018 and not revised since, so expect the tooling to have moved on
- Examples stay with LEDs and breadboard basics; no sensor or motor projects
- Individual reviewers flag a fast pace, loud background music, and a few explanations that are thin or plain wrong
A great course for beginners and really helpful in teaching how different functions work and how they can be put together, great method of practical teaching!
Genuinely beginner: the only listed requirement is interest, and reviewers with no code or circuit background say it worked for them.

Core Electronics
I'm Graham - the founder of Core Electronics. I have been learning, educating and making for over 15 years. Twelve of those were as an Avionics Technician in the Royal Australian Air Force, maintaining fighter jets and in deeper level maintenance workshops. A technically demanding job with broad exposure to many facets of electronics, which led to mentoring and educating others as a senior technician.
During that time (in 2007) I founded "Core Electronics" in Australia which has evolved to become a leading retailer for maker electronics and educational resource for tens of thousands of makers.
In 2016 we launched "Knowledge Factory" in Newcastle (Australia) - a space where we hold free community workshops to walk people over the hurdles with maker tech such as Arduino, 3D Printing and Raspberry Pi. Wonderful!
At every leg of my journey, I've been compelled to learn new skills and help others with their projects. We're now on Udemy and we look forward to helping so many others around the world.

I had seen YouTube videos from this creator and was interested in seeing what was offered on Udemy. Very good basic explanation and introduction to using arduino. Unfortunate not more content created by him. :)

A useful course for someone who has at least some familiarity with electronic boards and components and Arduino hardware. Needs practice along with the course materials to get the most out of it. Thanks for the great course

I have covered the 1st quarter of this material while working the examples in the SAMS book "Arduino Programming in 24 hours" All but the beginning was too fast paced for detailed learning but was excellent to get a very good overview of Arduino programming and its capabilities, with many good examples. The material could be greatly improved by the use of either a whiteboard or labels that would appear with the spelling of many sources of material, chip nomenclature, and board types. A great introduction and overview, but to learn and apply the material the student will have to go elsewhere.

Have programming experience C, Java, javascript, HTML, CSS, SASS. So it was too basic for me but great for beginners. Good introduction to the Ardunio hardware. The instructor did a good job very professional. Would have liked to have seen a list of web sites and hardware suppliers listed in one of the chapters. Would recommend to beginners.

I am new to the Arduino platform and this was a great introduction into how to use this microcontroller and of the available resources, configuration options and add-on shield adapters. Very helpful and highly recommended if you're a beginner to the environment.

its overall a good experience for me , the way they teach is quite nice but though some time some codes get a little difficult but its over all a nice course to know about the basic functions of an adruino.

It was a great workshop for those who are beginner or who don't have any knowledge about Arduino. Downside is that there is no support or answer whenever I ask a question on this tutorial. Overall, it is a great tutorial and hopefully they have an advanced course and also for free.

Great instruction that is simple and easy to understand and not too fast pace. Very thorough instructor. This was great course for Anyone getting started with Arduino, or anyone wanting to enhance their knowledge.
