Course Description

This complete, hands-on, step by step course is targeting the latest version of Raspberry Pi, which is the Raspberry Pi 5. Note that everything also works perfectly for Raspberry Pi 4 and older versions.

You don’t need any knowledge in programming, electronics, or anything else. To get started, you just need a computer to work from, and a Raspberry Pi board.

At the end of the course you will have a strong foundation with your Raspberry Pi, and you will be able to start your own projects in no time.

- Why this course?

You may be just getting started, or have already started to learn how to build projects with your Raspberry Pi. But knowing what to do first, and which path to follow can be quite hard and you may feel stuck.

The problem with most online resources for Raspberry Pi is that they focus on making you run existing programs to make you feel you’ve accomplished a lot, but in the end you’ve just copied/pasted some random code and didn’t even scratch the surface. The “why you should do that” is not involved. So, the next time you have to do something on your own, you feel stuck and too dependent on other people's code.

This course will focus on the “why” and make you become much more autonomous with your Raspberry Pi so you will be able to start your own projects without having to desperately search for code to copy/paste on the Internet. My personal goal is to make you understand enough to get started in a short period of time, and make you think as a problem solver, with engineer-level thinking skills.

- And how will we do that you may ask?

Simple:

HANDS-ON.

STEP BY STEP.

NO COPY AND PASTE.

This course is not a course where you just download some code and run it. This is a course where you will truly understand how to write the code and work with the different Raspberry Pi functionalities.

I will take the time to explain everything, step by step, even the basic things. I will write the code with you and explain why I write what I write. With the activities and final project you will have even more opportunities to practice on your own, and you will make progress without even noticing it.

- What will you do and learn in this course?

Here’s an overview of the different topics we’ll cover:

  • Setup your Raspberry Pi and install Raspberry Pi OS without an external monitor and keyboard.

  • Get good Python 3 programming basics.

  • Work with the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO panel.

  • Use a PIR sensor to detect movement from your Pi.

  • Discover how to use a Unix terminal and the most useful command line tools.

  • Send an email from your Raspberry Pi.

  • Take photos and videos using the Raspberry Pi camera.

  • Create a web server on your Raspberry Pi with the Flask framework.

The course is divided into 15 sections to make it easier to navigate and track progress. Each section is focused on one topic. For each topic we start with hands-on explanations.

And all along the way, through the different sections, you will have many opportunities to practice (11 activities) on the most important points.

After learning all those topics, you’ll work on a final project where you can practice more with everything you’ve seen in the course. This is also a good opportunity to mix different functionalities together, which is where you can really start to create much bigger and powerful applications.

So, don’t wait any longer and start your Raspberry Pi journey with this course!

The teaching method I use is now a proven method - not because I or someone arbitrarily said so, but because of the tons of positive feedback about successful learning results I’ve received over the years with thousands of students. Here are actual reviews from students who took this course:

“Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners to Learn Raspberry Pi. A great choice for beginners!!!” - Evan V.

“I feel accomplished after completing this course. The amount of knowledge gained and effort put in has been truly rewarding.” - Parul S.

“This course was a great match for me and helped me understand the GPIO interface, breadboard usage and how to send the proper python commands to control the electronic elements. Thank you!” - Mary P.

“Total beginner and the course is getting me set up and running. What more could one ask for” - Steve C.

I don’t come from an academic background. I’m an engineer and all I’ve done is to try to solve real problems by being practical on what I need to do and to learn. I actually used Raspberry Pi to program an entire 6 axis robotic arm which is now on the market. This forced me to go to the point and focus on what’s really useful.

This experience and the lessons I’ve learned is what I want to share with you. Understanding the “why” and focusing on practicing on the key points, is, to me, one of the best ways to progress 10x faster.

My goal here is to give you more freedom when you start a project. To make you less dependent on what you may find (or not) on the Internet. To think more by yourself when building new projects.

Oh, and you also get a 30 days money-back guarantee if you’re not fully satisfied.

See you in the course! :)

Note - This course is not for you if:

  • You’re not interested in understanding what you’re doing and prefer a quick copy/paste solution.

  • You’re already an advanced Raspberry Pi user.

Edouard Renard

Hi, I’m Edouard. I am a software engineer and robotics teacher. I'm also the author of the "ROS 2 from Scratch" book.

I really enjoy teaching new technologies to people, and making complex stuff easy to understand. My method is simple, and contains only 3 words : Step By Step. I know how hard it can be to learn a new topic and just be lost in an ocean of information, without knowing what to do. In my courses, I make sure that you learn one step at a time, through practicing, and that you also learn the best practices.

I am passionate about robotics. I found that it’s amazing how many cool projects you can do with a robot, when you have the required programming knowledge!

I also co-founded a robotics startup in 2016, building a complete robotic arm, from scratch, with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Ubuntu and ROS. Thus, I am aware of things that work and things that don’t work, thanks to a lot of practice. This will save you precious time and make you progress faster.

I'm a complete beginner. The course has taught me successfully how to connect my PC to my Raspberry PI 5. Slow going because all of the aps were new to me. But I'm 80 yrs old. My chemistry career was in the early 70's - 2016, so I had computer training in Basic, Fortran, and Unix where I learned to write scripts to do office and engineering functions. So the concepts for getting here are the same as I used in grad school and my career. And these basic skills and concepts are a real kick to use again.

I enrolled in this course as a student looking to transition from theoretical concepts to practical, hands-on engineering. I wanted a structured way to dive into the ecosystem, and this course exceeded my expectations. The highlight of my experience was the challenge of implementing projects using the Raspberry Pi 500. Working with this specific model required a unique approach to hardware integration and setup. Overcoming those initial hurdles—from system configuration to optimizing the Pi 500’s performance—was incredibly rewarding and gave me a much deeper understanding of how these systems operate under the hood. This course didn't just teach me the basics; it sparked a genuine passion for embedded systems. I am already planning several future projects leveraging the Pi 500 and the technical foundation I built here. If you are a student looking to bridge the gap between software and hardware, I highly recommend this course!

Very pleasant and concise course. You learn the essential information and immediately put into practice what you learn on the Raspberry Pi. All the programs work perfectly. You just need to get all the necessary equipment (Raspberry Pi board, camera, PIR sensor, etc.) in order to carry out all the practical experiments. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to get started with the Raspberry Pi—no need for extensive prior knowledge. Well done!

This course goes through the basics of setting up a Raspberry Pi, how to use its GPIO to control and detect different components, from LEDs to buttons to PIR detectors, using simple step by step exercises that take you from no knowledge to being able to detect movement, take a photo, send it to your email and check it through a web browser on the network, very useful start!

This course is good, that I enjoyed. I found it interesting and provides a good foundation to build more advanced Pi Projects, but there were some point of improvement. This course is aimed at complete beginners and while complete beginners could use this. The instructor gives a introduction to python but not OOP. This is despite the fact the LED, PIR and Camera (and others) were objects in the GPIOZERO module. I feel the instructor could have easily covered some OOP - enough to get students started and use the correct terminology when referencing objects, especially as student will end up researching other objects to use in their projects.

Great knowledge of the subject that he was able to convey with excellent teaching skills. What was missing in the final project was a visual display of what he was doing, just as he was showing it throughout the course. Although it is the final project, it is of enormous help to a beginner. As a final assessment, this is a highly recommended course to get started in this exciting world.

Absolutely FANTASTIC. I really enjoy Edouard style of teaching. Learnt a lot. I appreciate Eduard updating the course to keep up with the Pi5. I wish Eduard had a advance Pi course. I want to learn more about different files and what they do more like in last section where we can get the service to run on auto bootup. There is no course like that and I would really appreciate if Eduard could please do a advance Raspberry Pi course so we could understand the inner workings . Thank Eduard

The instructor gives thorough explanations for each module as it is learned, then challenges us to write a program based on what we have just learned. He does not over-complicate anything, and builds on each module that we learn. I have not yet completed the course, but I was able to write a program to detect motion, flash an LED, activate a verbal message, take a picture of what activated the motion sensor, then email it to me. Most of that was built on what I learned in this course.

This is a great introductory course to learn about the Raspberry Pi and Python3. After completing the course I felt satisfied with a working project and enough knowledge to pursue more advanced topics. I appreciate that the instructor included a sample of advanced features like systemd and provide some direction to continue our learning. I hope Edouard Renard will follow up with more advanced Raspberry Pi classes; maybe a course on openCV ;)
