Course Description

(Updated with ROS Noetic - This course is now valid for ROS Kinetic, ROS Melodic, and ROS Noetic)

Learning ROS is hard, and you know it. But why should it be that way?

There is a lack of structured resources for beginners. You can find some explanations and programming tutorials online about Robot Operating System, but they won’t really tell you which path to follow when you begin, where to go, what to focus on, etc.

That’s why I’ve created this course, that I wish I had when I begun. So you can learn ROS much faster than I did.

The goal of this course is to remove the big learning curve that you face when you start to learn ROS by yourself. I will show you, step by step, what you need to know to get started and master ROS basics.

This course is:

  • Structured in a way that is easy to follow for a beginner

  • Going through all ROS core concepts that you need, step by step

  • Going to the point. No useless and over-complicated stuff that you won’t use anyway.

  • Full of practice and challenges to make you progress faster

Now, why should you choose my course?

In the past I have developed a complete ROS software for an entire 6 axis robotic arm. I’m telling you that because by developing this robot, I learned (the hard way) what I really needed to know to build things that actually work.

My experience with ROS is not only about university work or a weekend hobby: I actually co-founded a business with a robot powered by ROS. By doing so, I had to focus on going to the point, finding what is useful, and what is not.

So today, with the practical vision that I’ve developed, I know exactly what you need to learn at the beginning if you want to get serious about building robotic applications.

What is this course about?

This course will guide you, step by step, through all the ROS core functionalities. We’ll focus on ROS basics, communication tools, and also on how to build a scalable application with Robot Operating System.

For each section, I will explain one concept in a way that is easy to understand, and then you will practice with me by writing, building, and running some code. I will show you what you need to pay attention to, what you need to focus on, and how to avoid common mistakes.

And, more importantly, I will give you some activities and challenges to make you practice on the concepts that you’ve just seen.

Note that all the code written in this course will be both in Python and C++, so you can decide to learn ROS with those 2 languages, or only one of them.

So.. Start your learning today and build awesome robotic applications with ROS !

After installing ROS on a Ubuntu OS, you will learn the following ROS key concepts :

  • Nodes

  • Topics

  • Services

  • Msg and Srv definitions

  • Parameters

  • Launch Files

  • And much more!

By mastering those concepts, you will be 100% ready to start any other robotic application and build complete software from scratch using Robot Operating System.

You will also learn how to :

  • Debug your program

  • Use command-line tools for each key concept

  • Build your application

  • Correctly set up and manage your project structure

And as I want to make you develop great (not just good, because “good” is not good enough) and scalable robotic applications, I will share with you the best practices that I’ve learned from my own experience.

UPDATE:

Note: this course targets the first version of ROS, or "ROS1". This is not a ROS2 course.

- Should you learn ROS1 or ROS2?

As of today, you should learn ROS2. ROS1 is not supported anymore and won't receive new official updates.

Now, having said that, lots of companies are still using ROS1 on legacy projects, and you might need to work with a ROS1 codebase at some point. If that's the case, then this course will help you.

Note that if you already know ROS1 or ROS2, switching to the other version won't be that hard, as most of the concepts are identical.

Edouard Renard

Hi, I’m Edouard. I am a software engineer and robotics teacher. I'm also the author of the "ROS 2 from Scratch" book.

I really enjoy teaching new technologies to people, and making complex stuff easy to understand. My method is simple, and contains only 3 words : Step By Step. I know how hard it can be to learn a new topic and just be lost in an ocean of information, without knowing what to do. In my courses, I make sure that you learn one step at a time, through practicing, and that you also learn the best practices.

I am passionate about robotics. I found that it’s amazing how many cool projects you can do with a robot, when you have the required programming knowledge!

I also co-founded a robotics startup in 2016, building a complete robotic arm, from scratch, with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Ubuntu and ROS. Thus, I am aware of things that work and things that don’t work, thanks to a lot of practice. This will save you precious time and make you progress faster.

Edouard, you are a Hero! Thank you so much for creating this class. Your explanation of ROS Topic and ROS Services was extremely helpful. Thank you for your patient step by step explanation, your friendly tone and for talking with us the students (and not at us). God bless you. Buying your ROS2 course. Merci

Excellent introduction course. I needed to learn ROS for a project and other courses, including other youtube videos, were not fulfilling my expectations. Luckily, I stumbled upon Edouard on youtube and his video was the easiest to follow and understand out of them all. I needed a deeper dive into ROS and so I decided to take this course. This course went beyond the youtube videos and helped me understand the concepts a lot better. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning ROS 1!

The English pronunciation of the instructor is difficult to follow, but the content so far (after 4 videos of intro) is very basic. Gives you an idea of why to use ROS and how it works in a broad manner. Therefore, if you are looking for a hop-on course to start installing and programming in ROS, this one might not be it.

This course does what it says it teaches the basics of the ROS library using either Python or C++. The instructor speaks clearly and knows what he is talking about. Nevertheless, there are many important concepts missing like actions (he also provides a course for this), gazebo etc. This doesn’t reduce the quality of the course, because it is not a course to learn robotics concepts like SLAM, Path Planning, Localization and so on where you need additional tools like e.g. gazebo. There are plenty of other courses which teach these concepts. So be aware that after ending this course you will only have learned the basic knowledge in ROS and cannot develop complex robotics software. I enjoyed especially the part where he shows how you can transform your ROS code into OOP which is very important ourdays. I hope there will be more courses which use these concepts as a base to develop more complex applications in robotics.

I liked the way individual topics and associated command line examples were provided. However i believe i would have benefited from an initial conceptual overview of the components and functionalities. Felt like the course lacked a broader picture or a well defined end goal (like a final project). Also would have liked more info on real life best practices and the oop approach.

course is well structured and explained. i have gained better understanding on ROS. if the course also contain some basic introduction about, how ROS can be used with different development boards, might help beginners like me planning to work on ROS combined with Raspberry Pi or ARM boards.

Halfway through the course, I'm finding it very instructive. Currently, using the newly released ROS distribution (ROS Noetic). Being a mechatronics graduate student, I'm deeply fascinated with robotics. The contents are well-organized for a beginner to have a proper understanding and exposure to the available tools. Can't deny that it requires a lot of practice to master, like any other skills. Edouard explains the concepts, codes and scopes quite clearly. I would recommend this for any beginner. Looking forward to the projects I can do with ROS. Thank you!

This course gives a very structural way to teach whoever wants to learn ROS without any prior experience. It is extremely helpful if you want to understand all the ROS basic concepts besides ROS wiki, the pronunciation of words is clear and quality of the video is great! Good content, will definitely recommend! :)

I have covered the entire course and it has been amazing. What I like about Edouard is that not only he properly teaches the material - in a detailed manner, he also gives an intuitive understanding of the concepts in ROS that otherwise would have been very abstract for me. I highly recommend this course! Thank you, Edouard!
