Art Fundamentals - Building Blocks of Digital Painting (Udemy.com)

A beginner's guide to the building blocks of digital art

Created by: Hardy Fowler

Last updated October 2024

Our take

Based on the ratings of 7,113 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in October 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, hour-long primer from concept artist Hardy Fowler that covers the vocabulary of art, value, form and color, and finishes with a short Photoshop exercise turning a circle into a shaded apple. It runs ten lectures and 67 minutes, with 44 of those in a single Art Basics section. The course is built as a feeder for the instructor's paid painting courses, and it plays like one: a taster, not a curriculum. Over 121,000 students have enrolled and 7,100 have left reviews, averaging 4.6 stars, which says a lot of people found the taster worth their hour.

Students praise the teaching: clear, relaxed and motivational, and the short project left at least one reviewer surprised at how good the result looked. Reviewers also say the value and color theory holds up. The complaints are consistent too. The instructor moves fast in Photoshop, switching brushes, opacity and flow without saying so, and one one-star review says it is easier to watch than to follow along. One 2020 review notes the recording uses an older Photoshop, so a shortcut or two no longer works. And one beginner felt the course is mostly theory with very little actual painting.

It's free, so the risk is an hour, nothing more. Next to the paid courses it sits beside, this is the warm-up, not the workout. Newcomers who don't yet know what value or form mean should start here, then move on to a longer course. Anyone who already knows the basics can skip straight to those. It was last updated in October 2024, which helps, though the Photoshop footage may still look older than the version on a new machine.

Best forTotal newcomers who need the vocabulary of art explained before committing to a long paid painting course.
Skip it ifYou already know what value and form mean, or you want hours of hands-on painting rather than an hour of theory.

Pros

  • Free and only 67 minutes, so it costs nothing but an hour to find out if digital painting is for you.
  • Reviewers call Fowler clear, relaxed and motivational, and say the value and color theory holds up.
  • Ends with a short project, a shaded apple, that surprised at least one student with how good it looked.
  • Refreshed in October 2024 after a 2017 launch, and still drawing four and five star reviews in 2026.

Cons

  • Photoshop steps go by fast; brush, opacity and flow changes often happen without being explained.
  • Mostly theory. One beginner wanted more actual painting, and another said the content is not enough on its own.
  • Recorded on an older Photoshop, so at least one shortcut reviewers mention no longer works.
I learned more in this short free course than in other longer courses that I purchased.

Genuinely beginner. No art background needed, but basic Photoshop familiarity helps, and Fowler's free Photoshop primer is suggested first.

I have watched this but haven't done the work yet, but I am so excited to do it. The class is excellent. It's easy to understand and follow along. You're given all the steps to do a project. UPDATE: I went back and did the warm up exercise and the short project and it is awesome. I didn't think my project would look like much by the end, but it did. You learn some really great techniques to practice. I highly recommend this class.

The presentation is great, the instructor is very clear and motivational. These are basic concepts but for me very refreshing. Nice!

I learned more in this short free course than in other longer courses that I purchased. Hardy is very knowledgeable and pushes you to apply what he's doing and saying, without you just copying what's on screen, then not knowing what you did. You know exactly what you're doing, you remember that and apply it next time. I also loved the fact that I learned a lot about Photoshop tools, that are very useful.

In this course you are shown how to use Photoshop to create convincing 3D volumes using value. Every Section is clear and concise, yet relaxed. This was a great match for me as I had never used Photoshop for digital painting before and it covers the fundamental techniques needed for Hardy's other course I'm taking, Painting Machines.

It was really infromative, I really enjoyed how fast i learded stuff. One thing that bothered me a bit is that when the shading came with the cube and ball, I would have liked a bit more explanetion on the brush movement and layering of colors. But ultimately i was able to figure it out with a couple of trying. Sorry about my english, not a native speaker. Thank you for the Course

Again, it's a very dated version of PS where some of the techniques are so outdated that they have now been scrapped. For example, the marquee tool. This seems to be one of Hardy's favourite tools in PS, however; holding down the Shift key to make a perfect circle (or square) no longer works in PS CC 2020, hence why we have a shape tool. Apart from that, everything with colour theory and value was spot on. Hardy is a pleasant guy and he is very knowledgeable about his craft. I just wish he would update his courses in PS CC 2020! Even if I had to pay for them that would be fine.

Great instructor, really valuable information - loved the combination of technical Photoshop instruction and art theory. Only criticism is that the final lesson is billed as a How-to for your first painting when it's obviously a just a taster to tempt you into buying the next class. Also, I wish there was more info about brush settings in PSD - not the brush used - but rather the way we can manipulate the effect of a brush through settings to achieve a specific effect. This can make or break a piece of work and there was an assumption that everyone's version of Photoshop has brushes set a certain way by default and this isn't always the case. BUT...overall, thoroughly enjoyed it and it was free so who's going to really complain ;) Can't wait to start Hardy's next class!

Although this is an introductory course , Hardy provided an added value information for the students who are seeking to learn fundamentals of digital art. I found this introductory very useful and Hardy is a great instructor. Thanks Hardy for giving knowledge free of charge but it was useful to let us know your core.

This course was very fun and helpful as an introductory to some of the more advance courses I am looking forward to. I feel more familiar with a lot of the base concepts and use of a Wacom tablet in conjunction with Photoshop, I hope to make some cool stuff in the future building on what was learned here!

Sweet and short. There is a no fluff approach to the instructor. He seems to know what he is talking about and he gives you the main tools for Sketching in Photoshop almost immediatly. This is the first course I finish in Udemy and I enrolled to more than a few. The instructor is also responsive to messages and questions which is something I really value. So grab this course. It's a good intro and it's free !
