ASP.NET Zero: Development with ASP.NET Core & Angular (Udemy.com)

Building Single Page Web Applications

Created by: Volosoft Bilişim

Last updated April 2019

Our take

Based on the ratings of 2,710 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is Volosoft's own free walkthrough of ASP.NET Zero, the commercial starter kit from the company behind ASP.NET Boilerplate. It runs 3.3 hours across 53 lectures in four sections: a short introduction, a tour of the source code, and a 98 minute build of a first feature on top of the existing solution. The audience is narrow. The requirements list an active ASP.NET Zero license plus basic ASP.NET Core and Angular, and the reviews back that up. People who already bought the product and want a guided first look get the most out of it. Anyone hoping to learn ASP.NET Core or Angular from scratch is in the wrong place.

Reviewers like the clear explanations and say it is a decent starting point, especially for a free course. Five and four star ratings dominate, with 1,204 fives and 981 fours against 154 ones and twos. The complaints are consistent, though. Several videos in section three are out of order, and lecture 36 jumps to code that has not been written yet. The code snippets are not provided, the demo repo reportedly does not run, and the instructor pastes chunks of code without explaining them. A few students call it a product demo rather than a course, and the accent takes some getting used to.

The course was last updated in April 2019, so expect the videos to drift from the current ASP.NET Zero template and documentation. Set beside the other ASP.NET Core courses on this page, it covers a proprietary product rather than the framework itself. Anyone with a Zero license and a spare afternoon gets a free, fast orientation with rough edges. Without the license, one of the from scratch ASP.NET Core and Angular courses is the better pick.

Best forTeams that just bought an ASP.NET Zero license and want a guided tour of the solution before building on it.
Skip it ifYou want to learn ASP.NET Core or Angular themselves, or you don't own a Zero license to follow along with.

Pros

  • Free, and at 3.3 hours it is short enough to finish in an afternoon.
  • Made by Volosoft, the company behind ASP.NET Zero, so the source code tour comes from the people who wrote it.
  • Section three builds a real feature on top of the existing solution rather than staying on slides.
  • Reviewers say the explanations are clear and the course is a good starting point for Zero.

Cons

  • Last updated April 2019; reviewers say the videos no longer match the current template or docs.
  • Some section three videos are out of order and lecture 36 jumps to code that was never shown.
  • Code snippets are not provided and the demo repo reportedly does not run, so students type code off the screen.
It was really good for the most part, but at some points it didnt match the current asp.net demo and it bounced around quite a lot
Joel Spencer, a student

Intermediate is right: it assumes working ASP.NET Core and Angular plus an ASP.NET Zero license, so it is not a first course in either.

Thank you so much for this course. Being a free course with such content is really great. One humble request is that, you may need to look at the videos for section 3, initial few videos. Need some rearrangement. Thanks again Regards Anup Das Gupta

Good to know the basics and how to add a new entity/page automatically using provided tools in VS. Sound amazing and easy for basic features to add.

By Shannon Dunn on 12/8/2019

Would be great if this were to demonstrate the MVC project and not just the Angular project. Also would be good if they had it updated to 8.0. Otherwise this has helped me understand the project structure for the most part and get me in a good place to move forward, so far.

The course gives some guidance on how to get started with the ASP.NET Zero framework. Switching gears from VS to VSCode can create some confusion and get lost on the video if you are not familiar with it. I'd like to see more of this course what can be done with ASP.NET Zero. The course needs to be checked on correctness. At some places I get a video that should be in a different place. Also,

I'm an experienced full stack developer and in my opinion this framework is absolutely fantastic!!! I haven't looked the full documentation so far but I'm confident it will be amazing journey exploring all features. I cant wait for using it in my day-to-day work. Great job ASP.NET Zero team!!!

By Raymond Bell on 6/13/2019

Having went through the full course i find it to be quite a unique product on whats been built, and how easy it is to plug in your own functionality on top of whats there. Gill explained amazing and i actually understand Angular much better now than ever before on how it all works together with the API. My company are about to change technology and when I found ASPNET ZERO i knew this would help my team get up to speed and save a lot of time. 5 out of 5!

I think this course is very useful for beginners in ASP.NET Zero. Especially the explanation of the structure of the solution is very valuable. If you have been working with ASP.NET Zero for a while, you will already be familiar with the contents of the course. To get started with ASP.NET Zero, the course is a good complement to the existing documentation.

By Colin Munford on 5/3/2019

A great course that covers the basics of creating the ASPNetZero Angular/Core Phonebook application. The source files for the PhoneBook specific classes are not included in the course and some code is not clearly visible in the video. Before starting coding section it would be useful to point out that links to official documentation and the Github source files are available in the summary section at end of course. More details on Power Tools (Navigation properties etc) and Xamarin development would be useful. Also, the author assumes familiarity with the Postman tool which some students may not be aware of.
