Course Description

Are you interested in becoming a counsellor or psychotherapist — but not sure where to begin?

Perhaps you are considering a career change. Maybe you have always been the person others turn to when they need someone to talk to. Or perhaps you have already started studying psychology, counselling or mental health and want to understand what working as a therapist is actually like.

Welcome to How To Become a Therapist: Counselling & Psychotherapy

This course provides a practical introduction to the world of counselling and psychotherapy — from understanding what therapists actually do to exploring therapeutic skills, major approaches, ethical responsibilities, training pathways and the realities of starting your own practice.

Rather than presenting therapy as simply "talking and listening", we will look inside the therapeutic relationship and explore what happens when a therapist works with a real person.

What will you learn?

Throughout the course, you will explore:

  • What counselling and psychotherapy actually involve

  • The differences between counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists

  • How to decide whether a career in therapy may be right for you

  • Common myths and realities of the profession

  • Deep listening and therapeutic communication

  • How therapists ask questions without simply giving advice

  • What it means to "hold space" for another person

  • Professional boundaries and common beginner mistakes

  • What happens during the first therapy session

  • How therapists structure sessions naturally

  • Working with silence, resistance and moments when you feel stuck

  • Major therapeutic approaches, including Person-Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and CBT

  • Modern approaches including ACT, DBT and REBT

  • and so much more!

Learn through practical examples

Throughout the course, we will use client scenarios, therapeutic conversations, analogies, reflection questions and practical examples to help you move beyond simply memorising theory.

You will consider questions such as:

  • What would you actually say when a client becomes silent?

  • What happens when you don't know what to ask next?

  • Should therapists give advice?

  • How do you maintain boundaries while still being warm and empathic?

  • What happens when a client's needs are beyond your level of competence?

  • And how do you know whether you are genuinely ready to begin working with people?

You will also receive a supplementary PDF course guidebook containing key concepts, reflection exercises, therapeutic scenarios and recommendations for further learning.

Can I practise as a therapist after completing this course?

This course is designed as foundational education and professional development, rather than as a substitute for the formal qualifications, supervised clinical experience, registration or licensing that may be required to practise counselling or psychotherapy in your country.

For many students, short professional courses can be valuable stepping stones: they allow you to explore the field, develop knowledge and discover which areas you would like to study more deeply.

If your goal is professional therapeutic practice, this course will also help you understand the different training pathways available and identify possible next steps.

Start exploring your future in therapy

Becoming a good therapist is not about having all the answers.

It is about learning how to listen, understand, remain curious, work ethically and help another person explore their own experience with greater awareness.

If counselling, psychotherapy and understanding people fascinate you — and you are wondering whether this could become part of your professional future — this course is an excellent place to begin.

Enrol today and take your next step into the fascinating world of counselling and psychotherapy.

Wow! I am glad I enrolled in this course! I learned a lot! It seemed that I just graduated from a University due to the profound learning I got. Thanks, Teacher! You deserve a rating of 10 because you taught me in an amzing manner! Good job! More blessings of good students for this course!

Information given is ok, but I was expecting more practical tools which could be used as a psychotherapist. Like how to conduct a full session with a client. Greeting him and creating a rapport is dealt with but then how do I get into the matter itself. Scripts would help. Of course they have to be adapted to each client, but an overall way of doing would be very helpful.

I think it covered topics thoroughly and is a helpful resource for coaches or therapists to study or refer to. The only difficulty was her strong accent which made it hard for me to understand sometimes. But it was certainly clear enough.

The content provided was informative and insightful. I think the title of the course could be improved, for example: Introduction to Psychotherapy and Independent Practice

The course gives a structure on how to start your career as a therapist, the basics you must be aware of and the facilities you are required to provide for a client in a professional setup. Thanks and Gratitude to Elmira Strange
