Course Description

Welcome to "Begin Programming in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central"!

This course is designed for developers who want to learn how to build extensions for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central using AL. No previous AL or Business Central development experience is required, but a basic understanding of programming concepts such as variables, functions, loops and conditions is recommended.

Throughout this course, you'll learn how to create real Business Central extensions by following practical, step-by-step examples. We'll start by setting up your development environment, creating your first AL project, and understanding the development tools. From there, we'll gradually progress to more advanced topics such as reports, queries, APIs, page background tasks and Azure Functions integration.

The course follows a practical approach focused on real-world development rather than certification preparation. Every concept is demonstrated through working examples that you can build alongside me, and you'll reinforce your knowledge by completing two hands-on mini projects.

What you'll learn:

  • Install Business Central locally using Docker Desktop

  • Install Business Central locally using Microsoft's Installation Kit (DVD)

  • Configure and develop using a Business Central Online Sandbox

  • Create your first AL project in Visual Studio Code

  • Understand app.json, launch.json and the Object Browser

  • Working with AL code snippets

  • Create tables, table extensions, pages and page extensions

  • Create reports using RDLC, Word layouts and Processing-Only reports

  • Develop and use Queries

  • Build your first mini project by creating a Business Central solution based on tables and pages

  • Build a second mini project by designing and developing a Business Central report

Upper-Beginner Topics:

As your confidence grows, you'll continue with more advanced Business Central development topics, including:

  • Working with namespaces

  • Creating custom rulesets

  • Implementing Page Background Tasks

  • Creating a custom API Page and performing CRUD operations

  • API access using OAuth 2.0 from a Business Central Sandbox

  • Integrating Business Central with a Azure Function

Multiple Development Environment Options

To make this course accessible on as many computers as possible, the course includes three different ways to set up your Business Central development environment.

  • Option 1 (Recommended) – Install Business Central locally using Docker Desktop.

  • Option 2 – If Docker isn't compatible with your computer or cannot be installed because of hardware, virtualization or operating system limitations, you can instead install Business Central locally using Microsoft's Installation Kit (DVD).

  • Option 3 (Alternative) – If neither local installation method works for you, the course also includes a complete chapter showing how to develop using a Business Central Online Sandbox.

You only need ONE of these environments to complete the course.

Once one installation method is working, simply continue with the remaining lessons. Although most demonstrations use Docker, the AL development concepts are exactly the same regardless of which environment you choose.

If you encounter installation difficulties, don't worry. The course explains alternative setup methods, and you can always ask questions in the Q&A section, where I'll be happy to help.

Let's start building Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central extensions together!

Important: This course focuses on practical, real-world Business Central development and is not intended as preparation for the Microsoft MB-820 certification exam.

Following the instructions to the letter, installing the docker vm didn't work. To start with, since powershell was not installed by default it didn't let using scripts , then even with the scripts, keep getting the error when trying to create the windows container: DockerDo : docker: Error response from daemon: FSCTL_EXTEND_VOLUME \?\Volume{17513c20-53f3-4d7d-a692-70227c3ae1f7}: The media is write protected. This course is awesome, I learned a lot so far, but I am struggling with the presentation of the code. Author don't need to show high resolution VS Code with tiny fonts. It could be improve with low resolution with clear and viewable font size.

I liked the fact that the video lessons are very well made and that the instructor provides a lot of useful information. The API pages lessons were very useful, and I also appreciate the fact that the curse is updated with new lessons on a regular basis.

What I appreciated most was the clear and straightforward teaching style. The instructors break down complex concepts into manageable lessons, making it easy to follow along and build a solid foundation. The practical exercises and real-world examples were particularly helpful in reinforcing the material.

This is by far the best and most comprehensive BC developers starter course i have seen! It covers indeed everything you need to start with BC development! Thank you very much for this, it really helped me a lot. I hope you will make more courses on BC development - and no problem if they cost money! ;-)

If you are a "tradicional" Nav developer and you want to understand how works BC this is a quick and really complete introduction. You see how implement pages, tables, add fields, reporting and how are defined the properties. After that the las 2 sectiones show's two new amazing functionlities in BC. A course that gets straight to the point. Thanks to author for this content I'll wait to see if more courses are aded.
