ChatGPT Mastery Guide: from Beginner to Prompt Engineer (Udemy.com)

Advanced Prompt Engineering Course: Optimize Your ChatGPT Interactions, Fine-tune your own AI model

Created by: Marius Manola

Last updated November 2023

Our take

Based on the ratings of 23 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.

Marius Manola's course is a 5.4 hour, 49 lecture walk through ChatGPT prompting, split into five sections: introduction, context, intermediate prompting, advanced prompting and fine-tuning GPT. It starts from zero, and the requirements say no AI or coding background is needed. The audience list is very broad, but in practice this is for a curious beginner who wants a structured start. It was last updated in November 2023, which is old for a topic that moves this fast.

Reviewers like the teaching. They describe it as clear, straight to business and step by step, and one says it finally shows real prompt structures instead of just repeating that you should be specific. Another likes that the basics are explained well before it gets deeper. The complaints are consistent, though. The last lectures feel unpolished, with the instructor forgetting steps and fixing mistakes on camera, and the one star reviewer says material seems to be missing. One reviewer wanted an overview before some of the episodes, and another found the use cases lean toward content generation.

The numbers are modest. A 4.1 rating from 23 reviews, 13 of them five stars, and only 154 students, so the sample is small. There are six articles but no quizzes or exercises, so practice is up to the student. For a paid course of this length, it works as a quick, focused intro to prompting. Anyone who needs current features or a polished ending should look elsewhere, or see whether the updates reviewers mention ever arrive.

Best forBeginners who want a short, structured intro to prompting plus a first look at fine-tuning GPT.
Skip it ifYou want polished, current coverage of newer ChatGPT features or use cases beyond content writing.

Pros

  • Reviewers call the teaching clear, straight to the point and step by step
  • Starts with basics for newcomers, then gets steadily deeper, per reviewers
  • Shows actual prompt structures instead of just saying to be specific
  • Short at 5.4 hours, with a closing section on fine-tuning GPT

Cons

  • Final lectures have forgotten steps and live fixes that were never re-recorded
  • Last updated November 2023, so interface and model details may be dated
  • No quizzes or exercises, and examples lean toward content generation
Excellent explanation at the start of the basics for newbies. Then the course is becoming more and more deep in explanation.

Listed for all levels, but really suits beginners: no AI or coding background is needed and it builds up slowly.

Overall the instructor was very good until the last couple of videos. The last 2 modules (4.8 and 4.9) were garbage as the instructor kept making mistakes, and there is stuff missing. I really hope that there will be updates as promised during the course as well as corrections. It sucks to have to spend several hours going through the course only to be let down like this at the end. I see this course is not longer accepting enrolments, which is not surprising because of what I just experienced. The instructor was decent throughout most of the course, but the way he ended it was BS.

Truly enjoyed the course. Presenter’s style is clear and informative. It’s straight to business, step by strep, and well worth your time. Can’t wait to see some updates and to see how he bring this to GPTs and protecting their prompts and knowledge. Or, even better, how to pass data between multiple GPTs, each pre-trained to do some the really well, (eg research online or uploaded studies ) and then on to the next one (eg produce compelling content), the on for the next task (eg exceptional layout with images), and finally the next (eg to provide all in clean HTML).

Overall, a good course with a lot of information. However: The final couple of episodes felt very unpolished -- the instructor forgot some steps or made small mistakes and had to recover in real time. He should have re-recorded the episodes without those flaws. Some episodes really could have used an overview before diving in, so the student could contextualize what was happening, rather than just watching step followed by step followed by step. (The old saying of "Tell them what you're going to tell them, then tell it to them, then tell them what you just told them") Lastly, it would have been helpful for the instructor to post some downloadable docs with the text of the examples he used or the prompt chains. I had to create a series of screengrabs to capture certain information.

Pretty useful course. Covers some basic and more advanced prompting techniques. However the diversity of use cases is rather low. Mostly concentrated on content generation.

Learned something new.

Excellent explanation at the start of the basics for newbies. Then the course is becoming more and more deep in explanation.

This is by far one of the best prompt engineering courses out there. Finally someone who breaks down prompt structures tells us about real applicable solutions, and doesnt just mumble around talking about the fact that you have to just be specific...Also,the delivery is pretty engaging. Thanks
