Course Description

Welcome to the Composition in Photography Masterclass!

Whether a beginner or advanced in the field, this course will be useful for you. Here you may find the answers to your questions:

  • Why does composition matter?

  • How can you compose the frame on the go?

  • How can you learn to see composition around - a very important prerequisite, in order to start taking better photos?

  • How can composition help you improve your overall understanding of photography?

  • Why is it important to be able to analyse your own photos - as well as the photos you see?

My name is Denis Buchel, I am an experienced photographer and my goal is to help you improve your photography skills. I have been a lecturer in different photography courses, I have spoken about photography on various exhibition openings. What I noticed in people is that they are always interested in how things work, how they really happen on the field. Why, for example there are some photos which are getting more popularity than others. The uniting theme here is composition. Composition is everywhere, it helps you structure one frame, it helps you take advantage of every detail you are surrounded by.

During the course, I'll be explaining everything with my own photos. You will see that everything is possible, when you master the language of photography composition, of composition rules.

We will start with the basics - what BALANCE is, how to achieve it. From there on we'll move to the different composition rules - the Rule of Thirds, the Golden Ratio, the Golden Spiral, till we reach the point where we'll be doing overall composition analysis.

All of the time we will be analyzing photography - a really valuable skill a few people have. And a few photographers speak about, in fact, especially when it comes to analyzing their own photos.

The course is recorded by Vyara Georgieva, that's why you'll hear a female voice once you start it.

You are on the way to stat an amazing journey in the world of photography! What are you waiting for? Join us today! Let me help you improve your photography skills!

Vyara Georgieva

I have been teaching for seven years now, always inspired by the enthusiasm of people, acquiring new knowledge. Keep It Super Simple - the basic principle to follow, every complex theory or concept turns out clear and easily applicable. Currently, I am a technical writer and an Android developer, aimed at creating educational software products.

Before going into technology, however, I have been teaching English as a foreign language for more than 7 years. Teaching is what my passion remained - as people need to be explained, to be shown, to be helped to start speaking. I have been preparing students for the Cambridge FCE and CAE exams for more than 4 years. At the same time, my adult student have been on various levels - starting from the alphabet (A0) to being advanced (C1 level).

I'm a beginner photographer and I just started taking courses on Udemy. I'm truly amazed by this specific one—I'm learning A LOT! I'm only shooting with my mobile phone right now, but I already see huge improvements. Even my friends have noticed and commented on my photos. I know some reviews mention the instructor's accent, but it's perfectly fine. As a non-native English speaker, I actually think it's beautiful and very easy to get used to. Go for it if you want to improve your photography skills!

If you're a beginner photographer seeking to learn about composition, this course is for you. It gives you a superficial understanding of the basics which can be further studied on your own if you do desire. However, I do have two complaints: 1. I feel like Daniel could have done a better job at choosing a narrator. At times the pronunciation makes it hard to understand what they are getting at leaving the viewer at the mercy of the subtitles in order to understand the videos. 2. Secondly, I would've liked the course to have gone more in depth on other aspects of photography like contrast, for example, an element present in almost all of his photos that impact the effectiveness of the composition. I don't know, maybe I'm just rambling, although the resources in the course did end up being covered in the first and second section leaving the rest for examples. Space which could have been used for learning other things... To wrap things up I learned a lot and do recommend this course to any beginners out there. However, I recognize it could be better. But can't just about anything be a little better...

Very easy to follow, useful information explained with lots of examples, you literally master it. It may seem like there are too many examples to analyze photos at the end of course, but after that the brain really starts to think differently. I liked it, like the other courses I watched.

My perception not just towards images but also towards daily live activity has changed since I’ve taken up this course. This course has helped me to understand various composition rules, thanks to Denis for crafting wonderful course and analysis exercises especially. I am very much positive about composing images with rules of Geometry, practicing these guidelines is certainly going to help me to develop an Hawk eye. Thank you.

The instructional content and images were well-thought out. The images clearly demonstrated the concepts in the design of the course. However, what made it somewhat difficult to follow at times was the narration, requiring viewing the images several times and trying to discern what the narrator was describing and expressing. I attribute the problem to the use of the English language and the accent of the narrator. Nonetheless, there is enough content and ideas that are readily comprehended if the videos are repeated and reviewed several times.

Content wise it is an excellent course, it helped me a lot in understanding composition rules and identifying them, the teaching method also is superb and you can really feel how the teacher has put a lot of effort in assembling it. The only "but" i can mention is the slow speaking and very heavy accent narrator which at moment make it a little bit hard to concentrate and understand the class but as many has said before me, just speed up the velocity to 1.5 and it will improve a lot. I absolutly recommend this course.

This is a good match for me. Today I was waiting in an examination room for a Dr. There was one photo on the wall, an image of a dog on a beach. Positioned almost centered but not centered. Applying what I learned in this study I noticed the golden ration horizontally for the beach and water and then for the sky and water. The dogs eye was positioned on the vertical golden ratio line separating the cloudy sky from the sunny sky. Lessons learned.

The course is a very disciplined study of composition....the structure of the course, the repitition of examples under discussion, and practice exercise were much more helpful in training the eye and brain than less rigorous approaches to composition. This course definitely increased my keeper percentage (percentage of photos worth printing).

I have been taking pictures for a while, but feel stuck, as I can see my pictures lack "omph". I know about the golden spiral, rule of thirds etc., but am very keen to hear more.... Now that i am almost halfway with the course, i cannot believe how much I have learnt. Thank you so much. I will post again at the end. I have now gone through 40 of the 47 video's and it feels like I am reading a thriller that I cannot put down. I am so excited, and am suddenly seeing composition, even out of the window where I am sitting with my laptop. I just LOVE this course. I feel there was so much to take in in this course that I am going to go back and do it again!

I did really enojy this course. It has Opened up my mind, helped me to realised what I had been doing wrong, why my pictures werent good enough for me despite of hard trying (wrong composition). It has made me to get more interested into the topic. I really like the way of analyzing the picture. Half of the star is missing just because of the voice, english and quite commonly repeated "that´s it!" Really enojoy this course, it has brought me what I had expected.
