Course Description

This course is for everyone who wants to learn and get better in Python and physics.

Except for some school mathematics, no prior knowledge is required. We will start from the basics and climb the ladder up to advanced projects!

Python is an enormously powerful tool and widely used in theoretical and computational physics.
It is not difficult to use but the whole topic can be overwhelming to learn if you are on your own.

In computational physics we use numerical techniques from mathematics, such as:

  • Interpolation & Model fitting

  • Derivatives & Integrals

  • Differential equations

  • Eigenvalue problems

  • Monte Carlo methods

to solve problems from all areas of physics.

You are kindly invited to join this carefully prepared course that will teach you all you need to know about Python for scientific programming. It includes a crash course, quizzes, exercises, solutions and, of course, hands-on programming sessions in which we will solve real-life examples, such as

  • Calculating the magnetic field of a charged wire (integrals & derivatives)

  • Chaos & the butterfly effect (differential equations)

  • Heat propagation in a sample (differential equations)

  • Simulating (and navigating) a spaceship interacting with sun, earth and moon (differential equations)

  • The strange behavior of coupled oscillators (Eigenvalue problems, Fourier analysis & fitting procedure)

  • Ferromagnets & Antiferromagnets (Monte Carlo methods)

  • Special properties of graphene (Advanced science lecture about the Nobel prize winning material)

  • ... & many more

Why me?

My name is Börge Göbel and I am a postdoc working as a scientist in theoretical physics.
I have refined my advisor skills as a tutor of Bachelor, Master and PhD students in theoretical physics and have other successful courses here on Udemy.

Especially when I started my PhD, I was impressed how easily you can solve demanding tasks with Python. I have used the program for the results in many of my publications and have recommended Python to all of my students.

“Excellent course, it is just what I was looking for: everything you need to know about Python for solving physics problems from the basics. Very well structured, full of examples and applications to real problems, template files to help you follow the classes and entertaining while instructive explanations.“ - Adrián Terrones Aragón

I hope you are excited and I kindly welcome you to our course!

Instructor Details

Dr. Börge Göbel

Hi, my name is Börge, I am a theoretical physicist working in the field for more than 10 years. I have been supervising several Bachelor, Master and PhD students and I am an experienced instructor on physics, mathematics and programming-related topics and want to spark your excitement for science. I will help you to become knowledgeable and successful in the STEM fields. Understanding Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics basically guarantees you to have a successful career and to be able to make the world a better place. However, getting into these extremely fascinating topics can be frustrating: They are often taught either too loosely or with a too strong focus on the mathematics.

My all-in-one courses are exactly the courses I wish I had when I was first getting into university-level mathematics, physics & programming!

You will benefit no matter what your skill level is: from ‘interested newcomer’ to ‘experienced university student’. Each beginner friendly course (mathematical basics included) condenses more than a whole semester of university to about 10h-20h of time-efficient videos, exercises, quizzes, and real-world examples.

Fantastic and detailed course. I would 100% recommend to anyone interested in physics. Some aspects of the course (particularly the bonus sections) were difficult to understand exactly what was happening without a solid physics and mathematical background but were otherwise intuitive to follow. I feel far more prepared for my first year in uni and have really enjoyed the experience of completing this course.

I learn a lot about scientifc calculation with python but i'd the course integrate thing such as autodifferentiation what is now mostly important thing in SciML

By Giorgio Mariottini on 10/1/2025

The course was extremely fun and very well explained. I’m also taking other courses from Dr. Göbel to refresh my physics knowledge from over 25 years ago, and I truly enjoy his teaching style. I would love to see a follow-up computational physics course with more advanced techniques and additional physics problems. I highly recommend this class!

This is the one of the best courses I've ever taken! My only complaint is that there is a lack of actually explaining the topics. If I wanted to learn how to program math, this is a good course, but if I want to actually learn the basics and how to use math IRL, this is not the course for you.

Dr. Börge Göbel has crafted what is arguably an exemplary instructional video in the realm of numeric methods, addressing diverse problem-solving scenarios within the field of physics. His elucidating presentations, particularly those focusing on differential equations solutions using RK45, has proven to be exceptionally enlightening. If time permits, I kindly request the possibility of Dr. Göbel consideration in creating an additional video elucidating the solution to the wave equation for fluid simulations. Thank you for the invaluable knowledge you have shared through your videos, contributing significantly to the comprehension of numeric methods. Also, Thank you for your dedication to enhancing the learning experience in this field

In my exploration of visualization techniques, I found the inclusion of animated plotting to be incredibly engaging and insightful, adding a dynamic dimension to the data presentation. Furthermore, the introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations provided a clear understanding of its basics, enhancing my comprehension of fluid flow phenomena. Overall, the incorporation of these elements greatly enriched my learning experience and expanded my knowledge in the field.

This 'Computational Physics: Scientific Programming with Python' course is very thoughtfully made and excellent to work though. All of the Jupyter notebooks included are fantastic and make it easier to follow along. Instead of having to continuously pause the video to type along, I can focus on the concepts being taught and not have to focus on typing as well. The content is this course is rich too. I had several "oh . . . so that is how this is done" moments working though this course. Thank you for such a good course on a complicated subject such as computational physics.

Great course so far. I feel that the magnetic field around the wire project was a bit too cumbersome and left with me serious doubts. I'm a third-year undergrad so the physics makes sense but the code in that part of the project has been difficult to grasp. So far, very good!

By Adrián Terrones Aragón on 8/31/2022

Excellent course, it is just what I was looking for: everything you need to know about Python for solving physics problems from the basics. Very well structured, full of examples and applications to real problems, template files to help you follow the classes and entertaining while instructive explanations. What I liked the most is that if you have any question, you will get a quick and clarifying answer from Börge, so don't be shy to ask him anything!

By Hunter LaValley on 5/6/2022

There is a great wealth of useful information here: problems, solutions, all the code is available, all the solutions are explained, as well as bonus content at the end of the course for those that want to go even further. I also especially appreciated everything being coded in real time so you can participate more organically, resolve errors in real time, and see what it is really like to do computational physics. Many physics students would benefit from more courses like this, especially dedicated more thoroughly to Physics I-IV, Thermo, E&M etc as this is an overview of a general physics education (a particularly useful one at that). I encourage you to keep producing material like this because I'd keep buying.
