Course Description
This course is for everyone who wants to learn about atomic, nuclear & particle physics: Beginners to experts!
A bit of high school mathematics is all you need to know to get started!
One of the most fundamental questions of mankind is: 'What does matter consist of?'.
Today, we know it consists of atoms which consist of electrons and the nucleus. The nucleus can be subdivided into protons and neutrons which consist of quarks and other elementary particles. In this course we will follow the same history route from atomic physics to nuclear physics to particle physics.
We will discuss different models and the experiments that proved them wrong and motivated new models. Furthermore, we learn how nuclear reactions affect our everyday life and may satisfy our electricity demand in the future.
I can guarantee that you will learn a lot no matter what your current skill level is. The first sections are phenomenological and can be well understood by high school students. The last few section really go into the theoretical details and are on a university level.
You are kindly invited to join this carefully prepared course in which we derive the following concepts from scratch. I will present examples and have prepared quizzes and exercises for all topics.
Atomic physics (4.5 hours)
Classical atomic models: Dalton, Thomson and Rutherford models
Quantum atomic models: Bohr and Schrödinger models
Fundamental quantities & Interactions: Mass, charge, spin & Gravity, electromagnetic interaction
Nuclear physics (5.5 hours)
Models of the nucleus: Liquid-drop and nuclear-shell models
Fundamental interactions: Strong and weak interaction
Radioactivity & Nuclear decay reactions
Nuclear fusion & Nuclear fission
Particle physics (1.5 hours)
Standard model of particle physics
Quarks, Leptons, Gauge bosons, Higgs particle & Antimatter
Limits of the standard model & New approaches like quantum gravity or string theory
Theoretical background (4.5 hours)
Quantum mechanics: Schrödinger equation, Quantized energy spectrum, atomic orbitals
Relativity and quantum mechanics: Spin and spin-orbit interaction
Outlook: Molecular and Condensed-matter physics (1 hour)
Why me?
My name is Börge Göbel and I am a postdoc working as a scientist in theoretical physics. Therefore, I use presented concepts very often but I have not forgotten the time when I learned about it and still remember the problems that I and other students had.
I have refined my advisor skills as a tutor of Bachelor, Master and PhD students in theoretical physics and have other successful courses here on Udemy.
I hope you are excited and I kindly welcome you to our course!

Dr. Börge Göbel
Hi, my name is Börge, I am a theoretical physicist working in the field for more than 10 years. I have been supervising several Bachelor, Master and PhD students and I am an experienced instructor on physics, mathematics and programming-related topics and want to spark your excitement for science. I will help you to become knowledgeable and successful in the STEM fields. Understanding Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics basically guarantees you to have a successful career and to be able to make the world a better place. However, getting into these extremely fascinating topics can be frustrating: They are often taught either too loosely or with a too strong focus on the mathematics.
My all-in-one courses are exactly the courses I wish I had when I was first getting into university-level mathematics, physics & programming!
You will benefit no matter what your skill level is: from ‘interested newcomer’ to ‘experienced university student’. Each beginner friendly course (mathematical basics included) condenses more than a whole semester of university to about 10h-20h of time-efficient videos, exercises, quizzes, and real-world examples.

It is a really good course for the undergraduates but not very advanced to help you in some concepts. However, for a beginner in these concepts, it will be a beautiful start.

This course has been great so far. I'm learning a lot about atomic physics. It's going to get more interesting as I move forward in the course. The instructor is excellent with is explanations.

This is an absolutely fantastic course with a well thought-out structure. The step-by-step approach towards more complex topics enables students to even develop some sort of inituition for the abstract concepts. Physics with manageable mathematical complexity. Real great stuff, thank you very much!

it is more than 20 years I completed my degree in Physics and this course has really helped me refreshing some concepts. it helps you with a complete picture without all the math details (that i can still grab from the Cohen-Tannoudji, Bransden, the Ashcroft & Mermin, Kerson huang, etc.). Borge Gobel is also easy to follow and very clear. I hope he will have some advanced version for some of the topic in this course and also a course specific of solid state physics.

An excellent course developed by Dr. Gobel, although did not understand the heavy mathematical part so could have made it a bit easier for people with a bit less maths background. Although a very informative and enjoyable course to study physics.

"Atomic, Nuclear & Particle Physics: From Beginner to Expert" is a comprehensive course designed to take students from foundational concepts to advanced topics in the fields of atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. The course is meticulously structured, providing a solid introduction to the fundamental principles before delving into more complex theories and applications.

This course was a perfect match to me. It is in depth, but still pretty clear to me as an 11th grader, perfect for someone that is interested in these topics and looking to expand their interests. At an educational point of view, which is the case for me, I'd like to see some simple questions added in between every lesson video that would help to iron the concepts into my mind, sort of like short questions in a textbook. Dr. Gobel is an excellent teacher and his explanations are very clear and easy to understand. I love the way he moves through the mathematical concepts, touching every minor calculation, so that all of it was understood. The other topics are equally well-explained. If I have the time in the future I would be interested in joining more courses done by him.
By Frederick Herrmann on 6/6/2024
Superb. Very thorough. It is, of course, an overview, and a lot of the advanced mathematics is skipped. Nevertheless, the concepts are well-represented. You can tell that Dr. Goebel loves what he does; he takes his time to explain everything.
By Colleen Moroney on 2/29/2024
Very interesting course. The final subjects required an advanced mathematical knowledge. It would have been helpful to have had videos of the lecture so you could follow the derivation of the different formulas on the overheads.
By Mark Bloun on 11/4/2023
I'm a middle schooler not even a 9th grader, and I greatly understand most topics, except of course some things about calculation of the slope during derivation, but for everything else I've understood at a higher degree, and I'm glad I got to find someone explain pure nuclear and atomic physics without going too much in detail regarding the mathematical side of it, would recommend for other learners!
