What is this course all about?
This course has one objective: teach you dbt (Data Build Tool), its features, and use them to transform your data engineering workflows. We do this by creating instructional video content where we go through each dbt concept, one-by-one, and apply it to a practical real-life example.
What is dbt?
dbt (Data Build Tool) is an open-source command-line tool designed for transforming and modeling data in the context of data analytics and data warehousing. It enables data analysts and engineers to define, document, and test data transformation processes using SQL. dbt (Data Build Tool) allows you to build scalable and maintainable data pipelines by providing features like version control, modularity, and dependency management. It promotes the use of SQL as a codebase, enabling collaboration, reproducibility, and automation in data transformation workflows.
What is dbt Core vs. dbt Cloud?
dbt Core refers to the open-source version of dbt that can be installed and run locally on a user's machine or server. It encompasses the essential functionality of dbt, including data modeling, testing, and documentation of data transformations.
dbt Cloud is a cloud-based platform offered by Fishtown Analytics, the creators of dbt. It provides a managed and hosted environment for running dbt projects in the cloud. dbt Cloud goes beyond the core capabilities of dbt Core, offering additional features such as a user-friendly web interface, scheduling and orchestration of dbt runs, collaboration tools, and integration with popular data warehouses and BI tools.
In this course, we will learn about both elements in dbt Core and dbt Cloud, with a particular focus on DBT Cloud.
Why learn dbt?
Streamline data transformation: dbt enables you to efficiently transform and analyze data in your data warehouse, saving time and effort in the data preparation process.
Maintain data integrity: dbt (Data Build Tool) provides a structured and version-controlled approach to data transformations, ensuring consistency and reliability in your data pipelines.
Collaborate effectively: Learning dbt allows you to work seamlessly with data teams, data analysts, and engineers, fostering collaboration and enabling efficient teamwork on data projects.
Enable scalable analytics: With dbt, you can build scalable and modular data models that can adapt and grow as your organization's data needs evolve, enabling efficient data analysis and reporting.
Improve data documentation: dbt Data Build Tool encourages documenting data transformations, making it easier for teams to understand and maintain data pipelines, enhancing data governance and knowledge sharing.
Stay up-to-date with industry standards: dbt has gained significant popularity in the data engineering and analytics community, and learning dbt allows you to stay current with the latest industry practices and trends.
Enhance career opportunities: Proficiency in dbt can open doors to various job opportunities in data engineering, data analysis, and data operations roles, as many organizations are adopting dbt as a standard data transformation tool.
Why choose this course?
Complete guide - this is the start to finish, zero to hero, basic to advanced guide on dbt. There is no other course like it that teaches you everything from start to finish. It has 6 hours of instructional content!
Structured to succeed - this course is structured to help you succeed. We go through all the features of dbt and learn how to use it in a practical way.
Fully instructional - we not only go through important concepts, but also apply them as we are building our application so that we can solidify them. This is not only a walkthrough of the all the features and theoretical concepts, but a course that actually builds applications with you.
Step by step - we go through every single concept in a sequential order (from learning about dbt Models, Materializations, and more. This improves your probabilities of learning these platforms to build solutions rather than going haphazardly through each feature.
Learn to learn during the latter parts of the course, we go through situations where we encounter new features or errors, and work through how we would use the documentation to resolve them. In this way, you not only learn about these platforms and how they interact inside and out, but learn how to resolve your own issues as they come up.

I advise F500 companies on how to build intelligent AI-driven solutions, tools, and agents to create impact and improve their productivity, and how organizations can train and empower their employees on how to use AI.
I teach online courses on how to build AI agents and automations for work, how to use AI agentic systems and tools to be more efficient, as well as other Gen AI topics, and have taught more than 500K students while facilitating technical programs at businesses and governmental organizations.
I also run The Intelligent Worker, a platform for teaching working professionals how to be more productive with Gen AI, no-code, automation, and other technologies, with courses and a free newsletter. I'm a speaker on Gen AI to many large organizations, and have written 2 technical books on AI Agents. I believe that absolutely anyone can now create powerful and intelligent agentic systems to improve their productivity and get time back in the day.
I live in Toronto, Canada and I enjoy building random AI apps and playing tennis in my free time.

This course is very informative, and the explanations are excellent, both from a theoretical and hands-on perspective. The only drawback is that the trainer's voice volume is quite low throughout the course, which makes it difficult to follow at times.

Overall helpful, but several modules are not fully compatible with the latest dbt version. In addition, many referenced resources are missing, which makes the hands-on work difficult to follow. I recommend updating the version-specific guidance and including all links/files to improve the learner experience.

As a new resource to use DBT, I learned a lot and will definitely use my learnings in actual developments.

It's been nice. However, the part where the source freshness was handled it was not captured.

Overall this was a great course. Some of the reasons I liked it: It is based on dbt cloud. So many of these courses are based on dbt_core and since I am using dbt_cloud, this was perfect. Also, during instructions on each topic, you could easily follow along with the instructor, and practice/duplicate the examples he was explaining and demonstrating he was doing in dbt cloud. On that note, there were resource download files to help with that along the way. Also, I actually like the fact that there were NO exercises or labs. etc. With the instructor going through each topic and explaining and demonstrating very clearly, the examples, I could code on my own along side his instruction. Most of the dbt concepts were covered, some were not, and I will outline those. That is the only reason I did not give this course a 5 rating. Here are the minuses: There needs to be a dedicated topic on deployments. Although a job was created and run, this need to be a dedicated topic. Although it was touched on very lightly, there was dedicated section (could be in the above) on continuous integration with GIT (CI jobs) The topic on documentation was too light, and no discussion of doc blocks There was no topic on the very important INT (integration) layer. This layer is the layer where more complex transformations are created, and the basis for which the mart layer is built. Typically, views, and (for large tables) tables are materialized in this layer. The coverage on integration with GIT was light, but ok for very basic GIT. For example, it did not cover the GIT pattern of feature branches merging to a dev release branch, and then the dev release branch merging to the main branch (the main branch is where ALL code is pulled from for the deployment jobs. There was no coverage on the on_schema_change configuration directive, related to incremental models. Invariably, you have to use this, so this should be covered in detail, and it does not take long to go over. All in all, this was a great beginner course, and not one that takes a week to complete. I completed this course in a (hard working) weekend. If the instructor were to "beef up" in the areas I outlined, I believe it would be a 5 star course, and because you are not forced (good) to do "labs", the best starter course out there.

The recommended course for beginners in dbt is good, but the sound in the videos is very low even when I use loud speakers. The voice is also slow. Could you please assist with fixing this?

There are a few mistakes in these videos that he ends up fixing but when i'm following along, pausing the video to do it in my instance and then end up having to go back and fix it gets frustrating. I'm not sure what the point of creating the manual tables with manual data in the first couple of steps of the models section when we downloaded and inserted sample data in the setup steps. Why not just go right into using that? Seemed like a waste of time. Overall though, took a while to get to the good stuff but it's starting to get to what I wanted to get out of this

So far, this has been awesome, clear-concise, and well-paced. I never knew anything about DBT but now I feel pretty good (especially around models and materializations).
