Course Description

In teaching thousands of students in over 70 cities around the US, I’ve learned that anyone can shoot in manual mode. You just need the knowledge and some practice. So stop letting your camera take bad photos in Auto mode and start taking control in manual mode and gain the confidence to shoot in any lighting situation.

When I first started teaching photography in 2007, I taught it just like a photographer! In a very technical way. And I used to explain what every button on their camera did. I realized quickly that for the average person, it was way too much info! They would get home and not know where to start. It would break my heart when people would tell me weeks after my class that they were back in Auto mode.

But, I knew there was something I could do to get them there so I removed some content of the class. A whole hour! I took the settings out that I never really used myself since I shoot exclusively in manual mode. While I realized it would be nice to teach them everything, my goal was for them to start taking control of their images and start doing what they wanted instead of letting the camera do whatever it wanted. After that change in 2009, when I’d ask people if they were shooting in manual, they’d say, “of course, why would I shoot in Auto?”

My goal is for you after my class is for you to be able to survey a scene, think about what you would like aesthetically, and be able to choose your settings in a way that will allow you to have control over all of those aspects, like your background blur, your shutter speed (so that your photo is frozen or blurred as you like) and your subject is in focus and as sharp as can be. It’s not a 15 hour class, but as I learned a while back, even 4 hours can lead to photo information overload. But at around 2 hours, you’ll see that my class packs a punch and won’t overwhelm you. I don’t like to say my class is just for beginners since it’s for anyone who isn’t shooting 100% in manual mode. With that said, I’ve had people who just unboxed their camera sitting alongside people who were shooting professionally, but just not quite confident in manual mode so it’s for all levels.

Photography has been a passion my whole life. As a kid I used to use my dad's darkroom, take photos of my stuffed animals and then develop the negatives and pictures the same day. Probably a waste of my dads film and chemicals, but it's paid off and I started shooting weddings professionally in 1998. Once consumer DSLR cameras became big in 2007, I started teaching small groups of students and built a course based on getting feedback and finding out what was easiest to understand for my students. Fast forward a few years and I teach rooms as big as 150 people how to shoot in manual mode. My goal is to teach you all of the important elements so that you can use your camera to start taking the images you see in YOUR head in manual mode.

I think the teacher is extremely knowledgeable, but I realize he covers so much information that I will need to study and restudy this course. I am happy to do that because with Udemy you own the course and can repeat it as often as you wish. I feel I will get a lot out of this.

I think this is an excellent class. I have learned from books and messing with the camera all alone. This was so good to actually have an experienced expert that could sort of the problems I had with poor detail and quality. It gave me hope. I was ready to give up on my fancy camera because it was way too complex. He made me understand so much more and not worry again. It put wind in my sails to keep going. In the book it said auto settings. The picture came out so bad. He showed yes, you do have to do the work and know how to do the settings. And I wanted to. So this was so empowering to me. He is really great. So professional and sharing all the secert sauce. Thank you

Great class... The length is perfect to get you the information you need to take better shots quickly. I have a trip coming up in a week, and this was just what I needed to feel comfortable getting off Automode. Thanks, Okello!!

I don't have a Nikon. But I nonetheless enjoyed this course very much. Okello provided me with a lot of information in an amusing style. I liked the course and I can highly recommend it. And I promise: I will no more automode any more. :-D Thanks Okello!

Awesome course!! This course helped me get to know my camera and its settings a whole lot better. And it made photography much easier for me to understand. I also enjoyed this course very much!

Okello is a very practical communicator. He has the ability to put a huge amount of information before the student without it being overwhelming. His down-to-earth approach to teaching people how to use their DSLR cameras brings the information together in a memorable and fun way.

I am old school and my first camera was a minolta XG7 film camera. Everything was manual back in those days. After taking this course I feel more comfortable on using manual mode on my Nikon D610.

Your class is absolutely amazing! I have taken numerous Photography courses over the years and have never seen such passion and talent at teaching this subject. You truly have a gift! Do you have any more courses on Udemy, especially on using Mirrorless, which I don't have yet, and advanced techniques? You are a true gift and have inspired me! Just recently getting back into photography and reminded me of the golden rule I have been bad at, Practice! Also a big fan of Manual Mode!!!

I absolutely loved taking this course. I have always had difficulty understanding aperture, iso and shutter speed...not anymore. The instructor does a good job explaining, simplifying and breaking everything down in a way that is easily understood. I like that it covers the most important aspects of photography and how to use your camera in simple terms without all the technical terms. I like all the helpful tips and recommendations. I have already seen great improvement in my photos. I highly recommend this course.
