Student feedback -
Working with James has made a world of change for me
Loved the course, gave me the skills and confidence to move beyond the auto settings …and I haven’t looked back since
I had… no less than THREE "ah-haaa" moments that instantly brought me to the next level. They were white balance control, focus options and several camera setups I had not known or thought I needed to know existed

this is probably the best Documentary course ive taken so far, i think i've tried 3, and paid for 2, the first one was on YouTube, but the presenter really breaks down the process, which i did not know, i really dont have a film background or a knack for it, but this is super helpful!

The instructor is warm, encouraging, and knowledgeable. Can't say I learned everything I need to know to make a documentary, but I did learn enough to get started. Great course.

Well the course was different than what I expected. Being a beginner i expected to have lessons on the art and craft of Documentary film making but the course turned out to be heavily loaded with ideas and tips about the process of making a documentary. The course does not even deal with shots and documentary aesthetics. Nor do we find help regarding the technical part of filming documentaries. But Mr. James Buffin has completed what he promised - of helping us understand the steps and work flow kind of stuff with sincerity . Yes those are indeed vital part of film making. The part on story structure had some useful insights with a practical illustration of Mr.Buffin's own short documentary film. Except this single illustration we don't find any illustration or video clips that would explains the crucial aspects of documentary film making. Here it was a bit disappointing but over all the course was worth pursuing as the process approach is hardly emphasized in any other course. Mr. James seems capable of delivering another course for those who would look for learning the aesthetics, art and craft of documentaries. I wish he puts together a course soon.

The course was helpful in some ways. Most of the time it felt like it was meant for younger folks to do along with accompanying worksheets for school. I was hoping for more specifics regarding techniques. The overall organization of how to film a documentary was helpful, but it was a lot of common sense spelled out. I wish there would have been more examples shown of how it's actually done in the business. Examples of the filming, but also have how a specific project might have used the workflow (an example shot list, schedule, etc) so that we could see the process in action.

So far it has been pure talking head. It would be great if there was actual footage that he shot or other B-Roll that could strengthen some of the examples he gives. For instance in this lesson he talked about why make documentaries and he talked about the positive change that begins by giving your time to the subjects and he talked about a 3 year old in Africa to an 80 year old in.. Boston? Perhaps some footage showing him interacting with some subjects here would be nice to illustrate the concept. It would make the lessons more interesting. Bear in mind this is lesson 7... I’m hoping that further lessons will have practical footage as well.

I am a novice to documentary film making and this course was of utmost importance for me to start going. James Buffin did a bang up job with this course - he prepared it in a very systematic way, pondered on the importance of preparation and reserach phase and shared many valuable tips. I worked as assistant with some professional film-makers and intuitively thought sometimes that they are not correct in certain phases of filmmaking - if they took that course they would change many of their "bad habits" and be more efficient. I certainly will come back to this course and PDFs to keep reminding myself how each phase of filmmaking is structured and needs time and thought to mature. Thank you very much James, Simon

Mostly because we are both Canadians, But now that I am more than half way through I would vote six stars because of the information and the downloadable content. Its like taking an actual course which I feel some of these are missing. Great course just finished and there is so much valuable information in this course, I suggest taking notes and going through it more than once. Thank you for all the info this was great.

So far I'm excited! I am a technically skilled filmmaker but a beginner to the overall documentary process so this is exactly what I was seeking. I love James' delivery as well. Very inviting to the process.

When I've just started, I really liked the concept of it and the creative view of it. The instructor is by far my favorite Udemy instructor (I've taken around 10 different courses so far) and has the best structure for this course, leading you to create something from a scratch to a project worth sharing with other people. He is clear, interesting, spontaneous and, above all, down to earth with so much useful advice for someone (like me) who is just beginning to get into filmmaking. He is not wasting time on contents that are of no use or are logical by themselves, everything is exceptionally structured and organized. The fact that I've finished the course in less than 5 days says something and it wasn't because of the lack of material or not enough lessons, but because I found it super interesting. I hope I find more courses (maybe one about a technical part of filmming a documentary) and more material from the same instructor, as I think he does a really great job! Thank you, James! :)
