Siobhan Twomey's course is a short introduction to storyboarding for film and animation. It runs about 2.2 hours across 23 lectures and six sections, moving from drawing skills to the storyboard process, thumbnails and visual language. She is a working background designer and storyboard artist, and the course is aimed at beginners, filmmakers who need to board their own projects, and illustrators curious about animation. You don't need to draw well to start, and paper works, though Photoshop or a similar app is preferable.

Reviewers like the teaching most. They call it clear, unhurried and thorough, and one says the assignments build on each other. Beginners call it productive, one says they started with zero understanding, and another says the camera movement lessons were new to them. The complaints are specific. One wanted more on composition beyond the rule of thirds, and another wanted perspective explained. One found the templates fiddly outside Photoshop, and one wished Storyboard Pro got more than a passing mention. Of 2,727 ratings, about 59 percent are five stars and under two percent are one or two.

Value is the open question. The course is short, so it works as a first look rather than full training, and one reviewer felt it was overpriced next to a good book. My background spans the disciplines of drawing, painting, filmmaking and animation. I studied Film in Dublin, and spent a semester on a scholarship at the Tisch School of the Arts, NYU in New York. I later studied drawing and animation. Since 2005, I have worked in studios in Vancouver and Dublin as a professional Background Designer and Environment Artist. I've also worked as a storyboard artist, concept artist, and I have directed a number of short animated films.

All in all, I've worked for over 15 years as an Artist, Illustrator and Animation Professional. I've provided artwork for studios whose clients include Disney UK, Sony Pictures Animation, HMH Publishing, to name a few.

I also have an ongoing painting and drawing practice, and I paint portraits on commission, and exhibit my work in galleries. My passion is to teach others the whole spectrum of art skills that I've learned and developed over the course of my career.

I think that this is a well made beginner course! The only possible gripe I could have with it is that most of the resources are meant to be used in photoshop and do not work properly in other software without some tweaking. Otherwise, I believe that this course lays out great fundamentals for storyboarding. It describes technical terms in a comprehensive manner, it provides many tips for practicing on one's own, and it was an overall enjoyable course to learn from. If you are a new animation student, or someone new to storyboarding, I highly recommend this course.

The course is good, but I feel that the section on composition could have been explained in much more detail. It covered the Rule of Thirds, but there are many other important composition techniques that were not discussed. For example, techniques such as the Golden Spiral, Pyramid Composition, L-Shaped Composition, and others could have been explained, along with examples of where and when they should be used. I believe that covering these concepts would have made the course more comprehensive and useful. Additionally, I feel that the course could be updated to better align with current industry standards and modern filmmaking and animation practices.

Instructor Siobhan Twomey presented her course in a very learner friendly manner. She made it easy to understand techniques that a learner could practice in order to follow through with the lesson plan, as well as how one can enhance their storyboarding skillsets beyond the course. My main objective was to enhance my storyboarding drawing techniques. However, I also learned storyboarding lingo as it relates to animation and live action, which was very interesting and informative. Honestly, I did not do the assignment mainly because I am terrible at drawing. However, I will still try my best to do it. Mainly, the value of this course I feel is putting the story together, coherently and clearly in a visual manner. Now I know how comics makers do it and how directors/producers of film and animation can take that "story board" and create a wonderful movie with it. This is a fantastic course, so glad I got it.
