Course Description
This course is LEVEL 2 in my series on Learning Animation using ADOBE ANIMATE. Check out my first course: "Learn 2D Animation", if you want to know the basics of animation principles.
If you are ready to take your animation to the next level and start working on CHARACTER ANIMATION, CHARACTER DESIGN & CHARACTER RIGGING, then this course is for you.
If you love animation and cartoons, and want to know how to design your own characters for animation; if you want to learn animation skills that can open the doors to an actual career path in the animation industry, or if you just want to learn how to make your own short animated films, this course will teach you exactly those skills. This workflow is based around character animation in Adobe Animate.
Here’s what’s you’ll achieve in this course:
how to come up with a concepts for characters, and how to draw rough drawings, and test poses
how to finalise your drawing to import into animation software
how to use Adobe Animate to design and build a fully working and animation ready character rig - this includes working with drawing tools, layers and symbols
how to animate a character frame by frame and with Aniamte's tween function
how to animate a jump; and how to animate a walk cycle
finally how to add your animation to a scene with a background, how to add music, camera moves and overlays.
This course covers a complete Animation Workflow - from concept all the way through to final movie clip - using Adobe Animate
The course is made up of 3 parts.
The first part is about how to draw your character from scratch and then how to import your sketch into Animate. From there, i’ll show you step by step how to make a build that is ready for animation. You can use your own drawing, or use one of my sketches to work on.
Likewise, in the second part of the course, you’ll have a choice of working with either my rig that I made as a demo, or using your own. The 2 projects in this section are the Jump and the walk. The walk cycle is one of the most important projects for any beginner animator. This is a crucial project to complete successfully and I will show you exactly how to do that. I’m going to show you a couple of ways to animate a walk, including animating a looped walk using tweens.
In the third and final section you will learn how to build an entire scene around this seemingly simple walk cycle. I am going to give you a background that you can use if you want, but if you have your own artwork you’ll learn exactly how to work with it so that your animation looks like it’s seamlessly part of the world you’ve created.
I’ll also show you how adding a short piece of music to your scene can suddenly elevate it and make it look like it’s part of a larger sequence or movie.
The main outcome is to have a whole set of professional looking pieces for your animation portfolio. You’ll be able to walk away from this course with some amazing work that you can show to any studio when you’re applying for jobs; but not only that - you’ll walk away with skills that you can apply to any kind of animation that you want to do. Because, even though this course is project-based; what you will be learning through these projects are core animation principles that you’ll use from here on out if you go on to become a working animator.
After you enrol, you have lifetime access to this course, including any updates that I’ll do in the future. YOu’ll also be able to receive all the downloads and files that go along with each of the projects; and you’ll be able to contact me directly, get feedback on your work and discuss any questions that you have. I’m here to monitor your progress, give you advice and help you out as much as I can.
You can teach yourself animation - there’s no doubt about that - and you can start to build a really awesome looking animation portfolio today. I hope you enrol, and I look forward to working with you.

The course helped me grow more comfortable with using Animate and learning about tweens and other tools I didn't know existed. I definitely felt a bit overwhelmed at times, especially because I created my own character and background and had to figure out how to do certain steps outside of the course. For example, my character needed to have knee joints, and I forgot to add them, and even after copying the workspace template, it still looked different than in the class. I wish the classes had been edited so that when Siobhan forgot to add something, it should have been fixed within the same class, rather than in a separate class. I also feel the class should be updated to match a more recent version of Animate since the 2026 interface has changed, and I had to do some digging to find out where certain elements of the Properties tab were. Aside from the walk cycle, Siobhan showed how to work with backgrounds and do jumps, which was wonderful because it allowed me to increase my knowledge beyond just making a character walk in Animate.

All the videos are very detailed and the pace, the attitude, it is all wonderful and above expectations. The only feedback I can give is to point out some things that are easy to miss as you watch, such as making sure to do certain things on separate layers, but that is more on me than the instructor.

Yes definitely this course was very much useful for me. As I was not aware of many techniques to apply in character design, or in walk cycle, rigging, etc. Now I'm very satisfied with the professional techniques thought by the teacher. She is amazing. Thank you so much. I have also taken other courses of her's, and I'm sure it will be much use for me in my journey in animation.

Overall, a really good course, I learned a lot of information on how to use this program just from this course, and I even managed to create a pretty cool animation and character too! I thought that the explanation of how to do things was pretty good, however there were several times when she skipped part of the video or I guess assumed you would know how she did something, or what button she pushed to do something. It left me trying to figure out on my own how she did something several times for many minutes. And the times she did skip a few things, were times when I really needed to watch closely what she was doing-- It was insanely frustrating to have to squint at the video and figure out how she managed to do something she didn't show or time skipped. After all, I have never even touched this program before so basically all the tools and where everything was located is completely new to me. I also wanted to know if creating a character in a different program, such as FireAlpaca, and perhaps importing the layers to Adobe is possible, considering I absolutely despise that pen tool and the normal pen tool when there's no stabilization option to click, and I can't create the lines I really want to add depth and personality to my character. But alternatives were never mentioned, so I'll have to look more into that. It took me way longer than I expected to complete this course, many many hours since I had to really get the hang of everything, but in the end I think I enjoyed it, I'll definitely be using this program more, and the lectures helped me a lot to understand a good amount of things. I definitely will need to keep looking at more courses for many more questions I have for animating in this, such as how to lip sync, add blinking, how to fade out your music when the song isn't at the end (I have no clue why that never worked). 4/5 stars overall, only 1 star taken due to some lacking in explanation and time skips.

Sioban is a super teacher, very sympathetic. Everything is very well explained, you can follow the workflow well, I definitely learned some new things. But what I think is that I rather animate and rig a character in AE with Duik - that seems easier to me. Personally, I would have been particularly interested in how to bring the two systems (rig/tween and frame by frame) together. For example, taking only the head or the blinking of the eyes as a symbol and animating the body by hand.

This course was super nice for learning how to make a character walk. Nevertheless it was a bit disappointing that the focus is on animating symbols. Even though it is probably the most common way to animate in these days, I wished to see how to animate some things frame by frame to understand how its actually working instead of just using a handy program which is animating everything for me. But to sum it up the course was nicely organised and helped me a lot to improve my skills. Besides, questions are answered very quickly.

Really excellent course, I had taken some of Professor Twomey's classes before and this was probably one of the best. I like how she gives clear instructions along with the files, thus modeling your own adaptations is much easier with high-quality reference (both for the aesthetic and layer organization)! I will be taking her adv. storyboarding and then background class next! So, step right up if you want to teach your characters how to walk haha!

Before taking Siobhan's animation courses, Adobe Animate CC felt intimidating and complicated because I couldn't find good online tutorials that explained things as well as she did. By the end of the course, everything that seemed complex became simple and feasible for me. I highly recommend it to anyone learning to do character animation because everything she covered in this course was useful, practical, and valuable. Money well spent. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :)

This course is a must have to anyone who bought the first animation course or to anyone who trully wants to learn how to animate. Siobhan is a great teacher and by the end of this course you will know how to animate a character, convert that into symbols and then add these symbols to a timeline, making the job easier. You will also learn to work with a scenary and add audio tracks. I trully recommend this course!

I like the way she change the registration point when she select multiple symbol. but may she needs to point that out more. I love the simple and engaging even the smiles she gives while explaining. I recommend this course to anyone who needs to know more about animation basic concepts. it is really amazing.
