Blender Character Creator for Video Games (Udemy.com)

Model Video Game Characters. Use The Sculpt Tool To Shape, Add Texture + Rig Video Game Characters.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 9,160 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

A project-based Blender course from GameDev.tv that takes one character, an orc, from a blocked-out mesh through sculpting, retopology, baking, texture painting, posing and a final render. There's a short mech build up front to learn the interface. It's pitched at beginners, and the reviews back that up: several people writing in say it's their first time in Blender and they're keeping up. The syllabus runs about 34 hours across 248 lectures, but roughly half of that is the older Blender 2.8 version of the same material, still sitting in the course. The new 4.2 track is the one to follow.

Grant Abbitt is the instructor a reviewer names, having come over from his YouTube channel, and reviewers single out the calm voice and the fact that no steps get skipped. One reviewer likes that the pace is quick but clear; another notes the videos leave time to try each step. The 4.8 rating from about 9,200 reviews holds up in the sample: 5 and 4 stars make up nearly all of them. Complaints are small. One 3-star review calls some content outdated and wants a Blender 5.0 remake, though a 4-star reviewer on 5.1 says the differences have been minimal and are addressed. A Mac user had to look up shortcuts alone.

It was updated in March 2026, so it's current. It's paid, and it goes deeper on one thing than the broader beginner courses it sits beside, such as Complete Blender Creator: a finished, game-ready character with a rig. If that's the goal, and modelling a room or a vehicle isn't, pick this one. There are no quizzes, so the challenges are the only way to check progress.

Best forBeginners who want one finished, rigged game character for a portfolio rather than a tour of every Blender feature.
Skip it ifYou want environments or general modelling, or you already sculpt and just need a rigging or texturing deep dive.

Pros

  • Calm, step-by-step delivery; reviewers say the instructor doesn't miss a step.
  • Updated for Blender 4.2 in March 2026, and a reviewer on 5.1 reports only minor differences.
  • Covers the full pipeline: block-out, sculpt, retopology, bake, texture paint, pose and render.
  • Every concept comes with a challenge to try on the orc or on a character of your own design.

Cons

  • About half the 34 hours is legacy Blender 2.8 content, so the current course is shorter than it looks.
  • One 3-star reviewer finds parts dated and wants a Blender 5 remake, and Mac users have to look up shortcuts themselves.
  • No quizzes or graded work; the challenges are the only progress check.
Fantastic course. The instructor has the most calming voice. He doesn't miss any steps.

Genuinely beginner-friendly: the only requirements are basic PC use and a three-button mouse with a scroll wheel.

Great course! It guides you through every step of the 3D character creation process in a clear and easy-to-follow way. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn character creation.

By Wayne Cooper on 7/7/2026

I have been following Grant's YouTube channel for a while now and have completed a few of his free tutorials. So far this course is exactly as I expected: superb!

By Mostafa Raouf on 6/17/2026

Such a beautiful course, easy to follow some things are different in the newer versions, but the most of them are addressed so far I’m on 5.1 but the changes has been minimal I guess except for the sculpting part which is already updated with a video so the maintenance of the course is very, very good as usual from such beautiful and rebuttable establishment. I will be following along this, and I will hopefully by the end of it be able to make at least basic characters. I would highly recommend this as an entry point.

By Abel Carlos Gutiérrez Camacho on 4/25/2026

Great course. I don't recommend it for completely blender beginners. Also, I don't think this the only course you need to make videogame assets, since it doesn't cover in depth animations, rigging, and other things that are important. However, I do understand that this course could take forever if everything was included. A very good course. My advice is to first get familiar with blender, then do this course, and then search for other courses about what you need.

By John Steven Ragudos on 4/9/2026

Even tho I already had an experience using Blender, there are some parts from the lecture that I necessarily did not know, especially niche ones, that are helpful for my progress.

By Simon on 3/1/2026

I can't lie, this is amazing! I've been looking for a character creation course in Blender that was actually up to date; from version 4.2 to 5.0.1, almost nothing changed! That saves a lot of headaches. I'm sticking with this course—I highly recommend it!

By Geophrey Kelley on 2/24/2026

While the instructor talks a bit fast he still gives plenty of time to catch up, review, and practice what he is explaining and showing giving you multiple stopping points in a lesson to practice single functions at a time to build your knowledge up. Very nice.

By Steven Guitar on 1/25/2026

lots to learn! its hard, but explained well. my background is coding, not really art but its great for opening my mind to whats possible here.

By Steve Nk on 1/5/2026

I recommend this course to everyone before you face many difficulties. It is better to watch this course first, because you will learn a lot of useful things. These lessons will help you understand Blender more easily and make your future work much simpler.

By Tony Brunson on 10/31/2025

The amount of detail in the explanation is amazing. I love how the video pauses and has a task for you to perform from the instruction. So far, I love it.
