Course Description

Progress from complete beginner to SolidWorks master — in one course!

SolidWorks is one of the most popular and powerful 3D CAD programs in the world. Millions of people use it to design everything from 3D-printed toys to fully-working mechanical vehicles. Now you can join them, and learn to create your own models completely from scratch!

Why this course is different

There are plenty of SolidWorks courses online — but none quite like this one:

  • Real-world examples throughout. Every lesson is grounded in practical, relatable projects, making techniques easier to understand and remember.

  • Taught by a working professional. Your instructor has used SolidWorks since 2006, holds both a SolidWorks Certified Associate and Certified Professional qualification, and works daily as a Product Design Engineer — designing real products for real clients. No academic-only experience here.

  • No prior knowledge needed. Never touched a CAD program before? No problem. This course takes you from absolute zero to modelling almost anything you can imagine.

  • Understand the bigger picture. Beyond the techniques, you'll learn how CAD fits into real-world applications like 3D printing and injection moulding.

  • Built on 40,000+ students' feedback. This course is the evolution of the instructor's previous bestselling SolidWorks courses (2015, 2018, 2019), refined based on feedback from tens of thousands of Udemy students.

What's included

  • 19 hours of high-quality video

  • Downloadable models and drawings for every section

  • Ongoing support — post a question and we'll get back to you

What you'll learn

You'll build twelve detailed real-world models, covering the full range of SolidWorks skills:

  1. Circuitboard — Basics, sketching, extrudes and cuts

  2. Pencil — Multi-body parts, revolved boss/base and cuts

  3. Pencil Sharpener — Assemblies

  4. Headphones — Swept boss/base, splines and 3D sketches

  5. Coke Bottle — Swept cuts, helixes and threads

  6. Computer Mouse — Lofted boss/base and splitting parts

  7. Key Fob — Modelling from photographs

  8. Lego Figure — Complex assemblies and advanced mates

  9. Drawer Box — Configurations and drawings

  10. Raspberry Pi Enclosure — Importing parts and draft angles

  11. Bicycle Fork — 3D curves and sweeps

  12. Gamepad Controller — Ribs and a full recap of earlier techniques

A note on versions

The course is taught in SolidWorks 2021, and all models and resources are compatible with any newer version. Using an older version (2015–2020)? Check out the instructor's earlier courses: Master SolidWorks 2015/2018/2019 3D CAD Using Real-World Examples.

The techniques covered also transfer well to other CAD programs, so the skills you build here won't be locked to SolidWorks alone.

Instructor Details

Johno Ellison

I am a UK design engineer who specialises particularly in Solidworks 3D CAD modelling.

I have a wide range of Design Engineering experience covering areas including mechanisms, 3D printing, materials selection, rapid prototyping and other design and manufacturing techniques.

I have more than twelve years of Solidworks experience and hold a First Class Honours degree in Sustainable Product Design from a Top 25 UK university. I have also completed a range of Solidworks-certified training courses in the UK.

I particularly enjoy working on projects which solve mechanical problems using innovative ideas and mechanisms. I previously trained as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force and am a keen mountain biker, and these experiences and skills feed into my love of mechanical design.

I have travelled extensively. Prior to becoming a full-time freelancer I drove a vintage London Black Cab from London to Sydney, passing through fifty countries, setting two Guinness World Records and raising over £20,000 for the British Red Cross, before writing a book about the adventure. This innate curiosity to explore and investigate how things are done differently around the world provides me with a wide range of design inspiration.

The instructor is very clear in his explanations, making the entire course easy to understand. If you are planning to start using SolidWorks, this course is definitely for you. By the end, you will have a solid foundational understanding of the program, setting you up well to learn more complex concepts later on. It is a great starting point. It is absolutely worth it—so much so that I feel I got far more out of it than what I paid.

Course is excellent. I got to the end and almost want to start it again. There's so much quality guidance. I've made tons of notes and know all these techniques practiced will come in very handy and help me master Solidworks. Thanks for excellent course. Best money I've spent in ages. Simon

Thank you. I really liked the way you formated the course, and how easy it was to follow you. Also, I enjoyed that you showed alternatives, and explained why is good or bad to use them. I will keep that in mind, especially with the simplicity of the scetches.

Author is super quick to respond to your queries and the course is structured in a way that in no time you understand basics of solidworks. Instead of going all over the menu items and explaining them all in one go, which we can not recall, I guess its a better approach that author explains only the needed options and menus and later in another part he expands on the previously build knowledge.

So far, the course has introduced basic tools. We'll see further videos introducing other advanced tools

Really one of the best courses I have had so far in all topics, not only Solidworks. Amazing structure and progressive introduction of the concepts. One thing I would note is that as the course advances to more complex models, not all dimensions are included in the resources, so if one wants to first watch the video and then take the drawing and recreate the part, it is not always possible. Having a second monitor is highly recommended.

The presentation of the material is fully explained, and demonstrates the capabilities of SOLIDWORKS. Unfortunately, I am finding it difficult to follow along because I am using the browser-based SOLIDWORKS for Makers 3DExperience. I chose this version, since it is the only professional-grade CAD program I have found that works with Linux. The interface is completely different from the Professional version used for the videos, and not all the features are available. Fortunately, I have experience with other CAD programs and am able to figure things out, but it is not a seamless process.

The progression teaching is what I expected. At the end of the Pencil session, It really got interesting on some techniques. I learned some design intents for future projects. Amazing feature techniques watching the Head Phone and Coke Bottle Tutorials. Definitely would recommend to new user to SolidWorks.

great explanation of the features and goes into detail about it. Extremely happy with this course. Great teacher, very easy to follow along and he does an amazing job on explaining everything, even talks about errors that you can run into or why some feature don't work and how you can fix them.
