Johno Ellison

I am a UK design engineer who specialises particularly in Solidworks 3D CAD modelling.

I have a wide range of Design Engineering experience covering areas including mechanisms, 3D printing, materials selection, rapid prototyping and other design and manufacturing techniques.

I have more than twelve years of Solidworks experience and hold a First Class Honours degree in Sustainable Product Design from a Top 25 UK university. I have also completed a range of Solidworks-certified training courses in the UK.

I particularly enjoy working on projects which solve mechanical problems using innovative ideas and mechanisms. I previously trained as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force and am a keen mountain biker, and these experiences and skills feed into my love of mechanical design.

I have travelled extensively. Prior to becoming a full-time freelancer I drove a vintage London Black Cab from London to Sydney, passing through fifty countries, setting two Guinness World Records and raising over £20,000 for the British Red Cross, before writing a book about the adventure. This innate curiosity to explore and investigate how things are done differently around the world provides me with a wide range of design inspiration.

I really liked how the instructor went through how to quickly make new parts by many times using other previously made parts and modifying those files/features in Solidworks. I’ve watched a number of this instructor’s courses and this course was just as good as the other ones. Highly recommended.

it's good and have better experience

I found this course very good, I am a hobbyist completely new to SolidWorks Maker 2025 and found it interesting to build a complete assembly of a simple helicopter having never used the software!. The lectures are well structured and easy to follow. I am a what if type of person so I experimented with renaming parts in assemblies and simple bill of materials as an added bonus…. Now for an animation of my helicopter.

The course served as a great review on SolidWorks and, as a LEGO fan, the end result is extremely satisfying to see. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone with some experience in the software!

I bought this course because I'm coming to SolidWorks from Fusion 360 and already have the basics down, I just needed to know where to find everything in SolidWorks. This course worked perfectly for that. Now I can transfer my skills from Fusion 360 to SolidWorks.

Johno is awesome, he is a great teacher who seems to anticipate every error I make, before I make it, and has a correction already worked out. Great project, I'm using it for my final project in a beginning Solidworks class at the local College. Way beyond what most of my follow students are attempting.

By Belinda Morgan on 8/2/2022

He starts slowly, which is good for someone who hasn't worked in Solid works for a couple of years, and then he begins to speed up. It is a little too fast for me, but that is why we can pause the video!

A perfect project for an intermediate level. The teacher is clear and very experienced in explaining even the most difficult concepts. A fun course that keeps you coming back over and over again. 100% recommendable!

By CADCAM Technology on 2/18/2022

This course is just wow, very well explained , beginners can also do it but I would recommend to do the basics course first and then hop into this one. The instructor is very crisp and clear about the instructions. This is a complete value for money course
