Escalate Scala Training - Setup Instructions (Udemy.com)
Set up environment and developer tools for enrolling in the Stairway to Scala training

Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,836 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is not really a course, it's a setup checklist. Dick Wall, who runs Escalate Software, recorded nine short lectures, about 15 minutes in total, that walk through installing Java, sbt, Scala and IntelliJ IDEA, then building a small exercise project to prove the toolchain works. It exists to get people ready for his paid Scala Applied and Advanced courses, and it's free. Around 25,000 students have enrolled and it holds a 4.2 rating from roughly 1,800 reviews. That is the whole job it sets out to do.
Reviewers like how quick and plain it is. The slides are clear, the exercise project gives an immediate pass or fail, and one reviewer says that even when something broke, there was enough information to work through it. The complaints are consistent, though. The last update was September 2019, so the IntelliJ and sbt screens no longer match what installs today, and one 2023 reviewer calls it very outdated. Mac users say some steps were vague. Others hit sbt launcher errors and Java heap issues the videos never mention, and one reviewer noticed that questions in the Q&A go unanswered.
For a free quarter hour it's hard to argue with, but treat it as a rough guide rather than a script. Expect to hunt down current tool versions, and read the review comments, where students post the sbt tweaks that got the exercise compiling. It sits beside full Scala courses like Scala & Functional Programming Essentials and the Spark courses, and it isn't competing with them; it's the on-ramp to Scala Applied, Part 1. Worth 15 minutes for anyone on that path, and a reasonable free sanity check for a first Scala install if you keep a search engine open.
Pros
- Free and about 15 minutes long, with an exercise project that shows whether the toolchain actually works
- Slides are clear and the install steps come in a sensible order for a first setup
- A reviewer who hit a few issues says there was enough information to work through them
- Direct on-ramp to Dick Wall's Scala Applied and Advanced courses
Cons
- Last updated in 2019, so the IntelliJ and sbt screens no longer match current versions
- No troubleshooting for common errors like sbt launcher failures or Java heap space
- Mac steps are vague and a reviewer reports Q&A questions going unanswered
A good walkthrough; I had a few issues, but there was enough information here for me to get through them.
Beginner to Scala is accurate, but it assumes prior programming experience and some comfort installing developer tools.

The versions of intelliJ on the course is out of date so not clear where I need to configure things, and I am receiving "extracting structure failed: Build status: Error" despite following the instructions as best I can.

Good and quick setup video. Got everything on the first try, however I would understand if people without a background in Tech working with a different OS could find it hard to keep up as the instructor moves pretty fast.

There was a part where you run the sbt clean compile, and he says if all works fine, go on to the next--but it didn't work fine. It complained about a missing dependency that it couldn't download. I just reran it and it worked the second time (thankfully). Other than that it was pretty good.

The steps required for the setup process is clearly explained. But what happens if the step does not go well? What are some of the errors and how can they be resolved? For example, when I run 'sbt sbtversion', I get an error about Jansi dependencies not being successfully received. Is there an alternative? Or what can be done?

The only moment, when things went out of control for me was the import of the first exercise. For some reason I wasn't able to run it - first because of sbt settings (I had to check the "use sbt shell for build and import" option), differing in the new version of IntelliJ, and then because I had to specify the run/debug configuration (it should be of "Scala Test" type). Other than that, I really enjoyed the course and I hope I will learn more on the next levels.

Liked the way Set up is explained. But more on Linux. I wanted it to be Windows. I need to spend a few minutes more to map with the application with the platform. Another thing was iDEA. The latest version took me to different and settings were not match with the explanation. So I moved to 14.1.4. Overall the experience is good. I am little disappointed since I could not find the Flight02 example in resources to understand what is explained in the course.

Everything was great. He was more heavy on Linux commands than Windows. Instead of a symbolic link, I just needed to edit my Environment PATH variable and that took a little figuring out. Otherwise really informative.

Original review: Course content is a little out-dated, but the course author still responds to course questions quickly. Updated review: I'm thrilled to discover that the course content has been updated beyond typesafe activator. Dick is an engaging instructor and I'm looking forward to find that the other Stairway to Scala courses have been updated as well.

Very clear and useful. However, I ran into some issues that I was able to resolve buy searching out there. (And I found activator to be deprecated I assumed in lieu of set, so that part of the setup should be updated accordingly.)

If you don't know about scala and Intellij IDEA then, go for it. It starts from the from the first step and then takes you further. Good explanation though could have been the best explanation if it was not so boring. As the title of the tutorial says, it only talks about the setup part. If you are new to scala and don't know anything about sbt and Activator then you should probably watch it. Anyways it's for free, you can't expect much.
