Essential Theory and Technique for Guitar (Udemy.com)

I have taken lessons in the past as a teen, but my instructor then would kind of allow me to guide where we went (learning songs I wanted to play and some scales for exercises), and we never dove deeply into chord building and music theory. This course was really useful because it encouraged learning patterns of the major scale, which are good building blocks for more advanced topics down the road, as well as the spider exercise which I had never heard of before but is really assisting gaining strength in my fingers and wrist. I am encouraged now after 10 years of allowing my instrument to collect dust to put more serious practice in again. Thank you for these helpful and easy to understand lessons!

I think this course is good for beginners. I have played guitar for a while but I feel like I have missed some things that I have learned here and found useful, so I think its a good course for beginners. Also if you are someone trying to refresh your memory of the basics. Its nice and slow so you have time to practice and try out what the instructor is teaching in my opinion.

The instructor has excellent communications skills. This is a well layout step by step instructional course that employs a logical progression towards mastery of guitar fundamentals. I enjoyed the course very much and had an easy time internalizing the concepts necessary to understand how things work on the guitar. As far as skill is concern only practice can help develop those and I fully intend to do just that.

For me it's pretty basic, but I've been playing a long time. It's always nice to get another instructors perspective, though. I didn't know that the root should be the lowest note on a chord.

I took a handful of guitar lessons 15 years ago and got some basic technique and chords down. In high school I played around with a group of friends for fun, but I felt like my understanding of the guitar as an instrument was still pretty lacking. After having not played it in years, I came across it and wanted to give this course a try. I really enjoyed it! Though I am somewhat familiar with music and was able to easily comprehend the musical structure well, it was so great having Troy string it all together and demonstrate how it applies to the construct of the guitar. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone who is very new to music and the guitar or even just new to the guitar with some familiarity with music. The concepts taught in this course has given me more confidence to continue pursuing my interest in really tapping into the guitar itself to make good music. Now this won't get you playing songs until it introduces the couple of chords at the end that you can then apply to songs that you will have to find elsewhere, but it gives you fantastic foundational understanding of what makes the guitar work and sets you up with good techniques to get your fingers trained properly to play the correct way which will certainly pay dividends. Very helpful course and well worth the time spent. Thanks!

This is a good beginner’s explanation of music theory linking to the fretboard. The explanation of the patterned finger placement for the C Major scale was excellent. Troy is a knowledgeable guitar player who explains the concepts clearly. I particularly was impressed by explaining thumb placement on the neck and how correct positioning gives you greater flexibility for producing good clean chords.

TroyDavidson is an excellent instructor and this is an excellent course. He includes an extremely nice E-book with alot great information and to use for future reference. One thing I liked among many is the Spider technique, a great simple learning exercise that builds strength, dexterity and confidence. Troy is patient and encouraging every step of the way. Thank you Troy for a great course. I’m going to go over the course information and exercises and continue to increase my knowledge and abilities.

I am learning guitar since last year, took this course to revise basics. This guy is amazing. Best lesson for beginners i guess on internet and as the name of this course says - essential theory. This man taught all the basic concepts of music theory in such a simple way that even a f goat can learn. Those finger exercises were fantastic to open up your fingers. Thank you man. I rated this course high as I feel it included much information that I hadn't gotten from taking a few months of one-on-one guitar instruction. The music theory portion is great so now I understand how major scales and chords are formed. The only criticism of this course I have is that a significant portion of the course is a bit too slow, almost agonizingly so. It has some great drills that can be done on your own and you learn your first few chords.
