Explainable AI (XAI) For Generative AI (Udemy.com)

Build Trustworthy Generative AI Systems with XAI Techniques for Transparency, Fairness, and Accountability

Created by: Minerva Singh

Our take

Based on the ratings of 10,448 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short course, about 2.8 hours across 42 lectures in six sections, on making generative AI easier to interpret. It starts with what generative AI is and which frameworks exist, uses Hugging Face and Google Colab, then moves into XAI basics and a very brief prompt engineering section. The description lists attention visualization, LIME and SHAP, but the XAI section runs only about 34 minutes. There are no quizzes or coding exercises. Minerva Singh teaches it, and it was last updated in March 2026.

Reviewers are split in a way the 4.4 average hides. Most of the roughly 10,400 ratings are four or five stars, and happy students say the topics are explained simply, with good visuals and a useful focus on transparency and trust. The complaints are consistent, though. Several say the presenter reads the slides aloud instead of explaining them. Others mention uneven audio, long pauses, repeated chapters and automated lessons near the end. A few say the GPU in Colab video stops at 4:40, which blocks the completion certificate.

Value here is mostly about time. It's a quick overview, and one reviewer wanted a case study of adding XAI as a layer on a black box model. Another said it names many broad concepts without going deep enough to be useful. The requirements ask for Jupyter experience, and a reviewer who isn't a Python developer only got partial sense from it. We'd call it a fair first look for someone comfortable with notebooks, not the place to learn XAI properly. Check the recent reviews for the video issue first.

Best forPeople new to XAI who want a quick, high-level tour of generative AI and interpretability before going deeper.
Skip it ifYou want in-depth hands-on XAI coding, polished delivery, or a course that goes well beyond slides.

Pros

  • Explains generative AI and interpretability in simple words, with visuals reviewers liked
  • Short at about 2.8 hours, so it is easy to finish in a weekend
  • Covers Hugging Face, Colab, LIME, SHAP and Chain of Thought prompting in one place
  • Reviewers praise its focus on transparency and trust in AI outputs

Cons

  • Reviewers say the presenter reads slides aloud without really explaining them
  • The GPU in Colab video reportedly stalls at 4:40 and blocks certificate completion
  • Audio is uneven, some chapters repeat, and there are no quizzes or coding exercises
Interesting and good material. The quality of the delivery of the presentation was not like other polished Udemy courses but I learned a lot.

Listed for all levels, but it expects Jupyter notebook experience and some Gen AI vocabulary. A non-Python reviewer struggled.

Course Description

Disclaimer- This course contains the use of artificial intelligence

Unlock the black box of Generative AI with "Explainable AI (XAI) for Generative AI", a comprehensive course designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge generative models and responsible, interpretable AI systems. Whether you're a data scientist, ML engineer, or AI enthusiast, this course will empower you to build and deploy transparent, accountable, and trustworthy GenAI solutions.

You’ll begin by exploring the landscape of Generative AI frameworks, understanding how they differ from traditional Large Language Models (LLMs), and when to use each. You'll get hands-on experience with Hugging Face, the leading open-source platform for accessing and working with pre-trained models across a wide variety of generative tasks.

The course introduces basic prompt engineering techniques to guide generative models effectively and predictably. From there, you'll dive into the fundamentals of Explainable AI (XAI)—what it is, why it matters, and the unique challenges it presents in generative contexts like text and image generation.

You'll learn practical methods for implementing XAI in both text-based and conditional generative systems, including techniques like attention visualization, latent space analysis, and post-hoc explainability tools such as LIME and SHAP. Finally, you’ll discover how to operationalize XAI through prompt engineering, crafting prompts that not only guide model output but also elicit transparent reasoning via Chain of Thought and other explainability-oriented prompting strategies.

By the end of the course, you'll have the skills to build more interpretable, responsible, and human-aligned generative AI systems—ready for use in production environments and high-stakes applications.

I completed a PhD (University of Cambridge, UK) in 2017 where I focussed on implementing data science techniques for quantifying the impact of forest loss on tropical ecosystems. I hold an MPhil (School of Geography and Environment) and an MSc (Department of Engineering) from Oxford University. I have more than 10 year's experience in conducting academic research (published in high level peer-reviewed international scientific journals such as PLOS One) and advising both non-governmental and industry stakeholders in data science, deep learning and earth observation (EO) related topics.

I have a strong track record in implementing machine learning, data visualization, spatial data analysis, deep learning and natural language processing tasks using both R and Python. In addition to being educated at the best universities in the world, I have honed my statistical and data analysis skills through many MOOCs, including The Analytics Edge (R based statistics and machine learning course offered by EdX), Statistical Learning (R-based Machine Learning course offered by Stanford online) and the IBM Data Science Professional certificate Track. I specialise in a variety of topics ranging from deep learning (Tensorflow, Keras) to machine learning to spatial data analysis (including EO data processing), data visualizations, natural language processing, financial analysis among others. I have acted as a peer reviewer on highly

Thank, good training

By Peter Santos on 8/17/2026

Some disturbance in the audio and some long pauses in speech, ruining train of thought. The automated lessons toward the end also threw me off. Better if the instructor discussed them so that the flow is seamless.

By Purna Namasivayam on 7/30/2026

The course did provide high level understanding but there were lot of disturbances and at some places the voice was not clear. Also video paused at 5:00 mins and is still showing error and seems its not fixed for more than a month :-(

By DIVIYA DHARSHINI N on 7/22/2026

The course me a lot to understand the generative AI for beginner in simple words with great visualization

By James Bell on 7/15/2026

I liked how the instructor simplified difficult topics related to AI interpretability. The hands-on approach made learning more interactive and effective.

Excelente curso

By Rika Rolika on 7/8/2026

I found this course extremely useful for learning how to interpret outputs from generative AI systems. The focus on transparency and trust in AI was very impressive.

By Ganesh Waghmare on 6/30/2026

Excellent course with a good balance of theory and practical applications. The content was relevant, engaging, and helped enhance my understanding of Generative AI and its real-world uses.

By Manjunath Naik on 5/27/2026

Thank you so much for covering this topic. There is very less details around the exaplainable AI. I just wish videos could be longer, not just gen AI and if possible, take a case study of how XAI can be implemented as a layer on a Blackbox model.

By MA. CHRISTINA GALLOWAY on 4/12/2026

I am getting excited to know more about this. Let get going!
