Course Description
Whether it's your first programming language or your twenty-first, F# will transform your experience as a software developer. Requiring nothing more than basic computer literacy, this course teaches you how to write software in F#.
Topics include:
Setting up your environment • Installing .NET • Installing Visual Studio Code • Creating, building and running a console program • Declaring values and functions • Working with arrays, lists and other collections • Conditional branching and looping • Record types • Handling missing data with Option types • Object Orientation • The magic of discriminated unions and pattern matching • Generics • Forward piping • Higher order functions • Lambda expressions
The course uses the free editor VS Code, which the course shows you how to install. The only thing you'll need is a computer running Windows (8, 10 or later).
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR LINUX AND MACOS USERS
This course originally supported all three operating systems: Windows, Linux and MacOS. However the latest version of .NET, version 5, appears to have broken the toolchain for Linux. It will take me some time to establish whether MacOS still works. For this reason I have withdrawn the sections of the course which deal with installation for Linux and MacOS. I may restore these sections in future if the issues are mitigated. Please forgive any lingering references in the course to Linux and MacOS.

I'm a software developer of several decades experience, currently working in the railway industry. I work primarily in F#, but I also have C#, JavaScript, TypeScript and many other languages in my toolbelt. I've contributed to or written a number books on F#, and have numerous successful F# courses available on various platforms.

This is my third time through this course and I learn something new each time. Mr. Eason, both your speaking and writing styles are just excellent and, while I know you are very busy, I do hope you keep this course as well as your book up to date. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts. If you care for an amusing anecdote: In revisiting this course, I had to laugh when remembering how much I obsess over the distracting fact that you record these videos with VSCode requesting to be updated. That number '1' at the bottom left corner mocks me through each lesson and I have to relearn to ignore it. Thanks for the disciplinary exercise and the smile.

A perfect introduction into the F# programming language. Exactly what I was looking for. Narrated in literally perfect English. Although you aren't going to learn much advaned functional thinking computer science here nor building real-world GUI or web apps (although you will be given clues on where to go for this) you will grok the actual F# language quickly and comfortably ending up perfectly capable of using this beautiful tool for practical tasks of yours and well-ready to proceed whatever advanced way you feel interested in.

Clear and well thought-out course. Concepts are articulated well and explained thoroughly. I'm an experienced developer (new to F#) and found this an excellent introduction, but I feel like complete beginners will be able to follow without too much trouble. Don't worry about the reviews saying it's outdated. The syntax has changed very slightly in a couple of places in F# 6, but the core concepts remain unchanged and I had no difficulty following. The changelog is here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/fsharp/whats-new/fsharp-6 One tiny criticism relates to the adding new files section. I would have liked a brief explanation of what F# is doing when it compiles, rather than relying entirely on VS Code/Ionide for file handling.

I began retaking this course recently. I study CS at uni, and i needed to refresh my F# knowledge for an upcoming course. This course is really good. I got some additional knowledge on how to debug with launch.json files, which i couldn't get to work the when I initially began taking this course. This might be due to me having better understanding based on what I am learning at uni. I am looking forward to taking the later half of this course.

I'm really disapointed with this course, but there aren't many options to learn F# on Udemy, youtube and such, if there were I would have asked my money back. The course is very short, doesn't cover many aspects of the language, Kit explains things in a very slow way (I'm fine with that) what makes a lesson of 15 minutes actually less than 10 minutes, then on each section there's a recap where he's just repeating the same thing for 2/3 minutes, if you take in account that the course is only 5.5 hours, you see my point. The icing on the cake is that he says "there are a lot of other topics I haven't had time in this course" So is the course finished ? geee Also the course is outdated, my advise is don't put your money in this course, I'd rather recommend you to buy his book (yes I'm not kidding I have it) Happy coding folks.

Everything is pretty well explained. As an experienced developer sometimes I felt like the pace was too slow but I think that proves "F# from the GROUND UP" keeps it promise to be a great course for people with no programming experience at all (he starts from the very basics really. I don't see a reason why it won't work for people that really doesn't know anything about programming). One small caveat: it seems the Bracket Pair Colorizer 2 extension sadly is "dead" right now (unmaintained and the repository is archived). It seems it was very used in the F# community (I saw a blog post by Isaac Abraham recommending it). It would be great to hear what alternative you guys know.

Kit Eason does a great job and explains everything you need to start with F#. The course starts from the very basics and builds on those fundamentals. Although it gets a bit more complex towards the end, you always have the option to pause or rewind. The only criticism I might have is the OOP content towards the end. Personally, if I was interested in OOP, F# wouldn’t be my first choice. Having said that, OOP content doesn’t hurt and might be interesting for many to see F#’s OOP capabilities.

Overall the course is a good introduction to F#. I've toyed with F# some in the past, so much of this was review. It's interesting to note that (at least through Lesson 42), he doesn't harp on immutable data, pure functions, etc. In fact, he takes the atypical approach of starting with arrays (rather than an immutable type like seq) and writes functions with side effects (e.g. using printfn). This course uses VS Code and (at least through Lesson 42) makes no mention of FSI (F# Interactive). This is not a criticism, but an observation on how the approach of this course differs from other F# material I've used.

It starts off at a very basic level. I personally like that approach. As you get to understand the basics of how the language works. It quite soon it starts with more interesting topics. Perhaps a bit too advanced for beginners? But for me, as a quite advanced developer, it was a good level. Som aspects I would perhaps have explained differently, or explained more directly (e.g. that [| |] is an array initalizer, and why it's different from more common languages use of simply[ ] for arrays). But no biggy. Overall a great course for getting to know F#.

Great short and focused course for F# beginners. This cource doesn't cover everything, but provides a good starting point to dive into F#. Introductory learning materials for F# usually demand a good understanding of .NET and C# (and sometimes Visual Studio) as prerequisite. Since I mainly use Python and have limited experience of .NET and C#, that demand was a huge obstacle. This course eleminates the obstacle by focusing on F# language features and using familiar Visual Studio Code + commandline environment. I'm looking forward to your next courses on F# (like database handling, testing, etc.).
