Our take

Based on the ratings of 157 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2021. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short, practical starter for guitarists who want to play jazz but already know their way around the neck. The syllabus shows five sections and 39 lectures in about 69 minutes: major scales, 7th chords, 7th chord arpeggios, and a few etudes. Most of the weight sits in the downloads, which include 100 plus pages of PDFs and 180 backing tracks. Chip Henderson, a working jazz player from the Memphis and Nashville area, teaches it, and reviewers call him clear, practical and no nonsense.

Students like the short, to-the-point videos and the quality of the handouts. One reviewer said he breaks scales into simple pieces that are easy to build on. There are complaints too, though each is specific. A few say the pace is too fast, that he mostly plays without explaining, or that questions got little feedback. Others want slower chord demonstrations with a picture of each shape, and one would like the resources in a zip file. The rating is 4.3 from 157 reviews, with 86 giving five stars and 11 giving one or two.

The course was last updated in August 2021, but scales and 7th chords do not age, so that matters little. For a small, focused course it has a solid following, with 1,319 students. Treat it as a launchpad, not a full jazz education: it stops before improvisation and deeper harmony. Download the PDFs first, as one reviewer suggested, and expect to spend far more time practicing than watching.

Best forGuitarists who know their fretboard and triads and want a short, practical first step into jazz chords and arpeggios.
Skip it ifYou want slow, talky explanation of every chord shape, or a full course on jazz improvisation.

Cons

Course Description

Are you a guitarist who has always wanted to study jazz but found many of the methods on the market either too confusing or based around concepts that needed to be navigated before ever playing the first note? Have you been looking for a way to take your existing knowledge and skill set on the instrument and apply it to playing in the jazz style? If you have said yes to either question (or both), this course, Foundations of Jazz Guitar, is for you.

The Foundations of Jazz Guitar course was developed to meet the needs of the guitarist looking to take those first steps playing jazz. This will be accomplished through developing the player’s knowledge and proficiency in three areas: major scales, 7th chords, and arpeggios. Each topic will be discussed and later demonstrated on the guitar. Each lesson will have a number of supporting PDF files and backing tracks that will assist you with taking the topics discussed from the paper and to the fingerboard. The backing tracks are to used with the numerous exercises and etudes designed to help you gain proficiency in each area. The goal is that by the time you complete the course, you are ready to  to take those first steps playing this music as well as being ready to take on more advanced ideas dealing with harmony and improvisation.

So, if  you are an ‘accomplished hobbyist’, college music student, seasoned professional, or something in between, this course is for you. All you need is a guitar, a desire to learn, and an open mind. I look forward to working with you in your journey through this course.

Was exatcly what I was searching for. The videos are short but they are concise and to the point and the resource downloads are well thought out. I would highly recomend this course to anyone who like me wants to learn the fundamentals of Jazz guitar. I have literally learned so much in the first hour of the course

By Brad Howard on 7/26/2023

The presentations are clear and concise. The resources are useful, but a zip file would have made organizing them all a lot easier and less time consuming.

By Luis Alberto Batista Rodríguez on 11/27/2022

Fantástico curso ,bastante completo en cuanto a material descargable donde se explica todo al detalle, muy bién complementado para un estudio en profundidad del uso de los arpegios sobre un Blues.

By Marek Jaczynski on 4/25/2022

Good, solid material packed in a short session. Seventh chords, arpeggios, etudes - everything you need to know to get started with jazz. I recommend it.

By Lauren Hall on 1/15/2022

Must confess this course wasn't for me and as a result I didn't get very far along. Perhaps after I've studied guitar a little longer I'll come back to this course and try again.

By Ivan Resende on 9/13/2021

Gostei muito! O curso tem uma ótima didática, com vídeos, backing tracks e partituras disponíveis. Recomendo a todos que desejam aprender mais sobre esse estilo e linguagem musical. Nota 10!

By Kishen on 9/6/2021

Best course for laying the foundation of your playing! Chris’ teaching style is precise and clear. Wonderful instruction!

By James Eigel on 7/17/2021

So far it has been primarily a review, but it's about where I need to be. I wouldn't want to be thrown into the "deep end" with out a review of the basics. Best to start on common ground.

By Doug Brown on 7/16/2021

I have been studying jazz for a bit, mostly chords to colour my playing, always nuggets in another mans approach.Chip seems sincere in his teaching I have found in the first few lessons, wants you to learn, answers some good questions ,looking forward in rest of coarse.

By Nic Price on 6/2/2021

Having an instructor the caliber of Chip Henderson at this price point feels like stealing. He offers a wealth of experience, when studied with appropriate diligence, cannot help but significantly improve one's playing. Fingers crossed that he adds further lessons to the Udemy platform.
