This course is carefully crafted to bridge the gap between beginner and intermediate Python programming, focusing specifically on functional programming principles. Throughout the course, you'll embark on a transformative journey, mastering the art of using list, set, dictionary, and nested comprehensions to write clearer, concise, and more efficient code.
At the end of this course you can expect to have a real understanding of:
List Comprehensions.
Set Comprehensions.
Dictionary Comprehensions.
Generator Comprehensions.
Nested Comprehensions.
The difference between Imperative & Declarative Programming styles.
Each section is supplemented with quizzes and coding exercises that allow you to practice and solidify your understanding of the material. These exercises are designed to mirror real-world scenarios and job interview scenarios, enabling you to develop problem-solving skills while applying functional programming concepts.
Additionally, this course offers a unique feature—a monthly job interview style question. Each month, you'll be presented with a challenging question designed to test your understanding of functional programming concepts and your ability to apply them in a practical setting. These exercises will not only help you gauge your progress but also prepare you for real-world coding interviews.

James Clare
Hi, I'm James from the U.K.
I'm a software engineer for a scientific organisation, and prior to this I have worked as a freelance engineer building Python programs in automation, machine learning and data science. I have also worked for 5 years as a lecturer in Computer Science and programming, specialising in Python.
I have taught Python to over 300 students in person, and completed over 3000 hours worth of online tutoring to students from all over the world. In my experience as a lecturer and tutor I have been able to compile methods and techniques to really help people understand how to use Python for their first language. I see great benefit in constantly relating lesson content to real life applications, and explaining the theory behind the scenes.
Many of my students now work as Python developers in the industry and I am proud to be the tutor that has helped them on their way.
I hold a Masters in Advanced Computer Science and a Masters in education specialising in Computing.

This course has been an amazing experience so far! The content is broken into bite‑sized lectures that are easy to follow and comprehend. It provides clear insight into how comprehensions can improve code quality, making everyday Python more elegant and efficient. The instructor presents in a simple, approachable way how to enforce functional programming paradigms using comprehensions. It aligns well with modern coding practices, ensuring the lessons feel practical and up‑to‑date. Overall, it’s a concise, well‑structured course that makes functional programming with Python comprehensions both accessible and enjoyable. Highly recommended for anyone looking to sharpen their Python skills with modern techniques!

This course helped comprehensions "click"! It efficiently presented a model for comprehensions that other much longer courses fail to offer. Thank you!!!

I am happy with the course --- clear explanations and examples, nice practical exercises, and in the end I am having sufficient skills and knowledge to apply comprehensions in everyday work.

This course does an excellent job covering a challenging intermediate topic in a comprehensible manner. The explanations are clear, well-structured, and accessible, making the coding exercises and challenges truly enjoyable. Thank you, James Clare—I’ve learned so much in a short time. Highly recommended!

I came into this course with lots of experience with Java > 8 so streams and lambdas (FP), some Scale experience (FP) and recent experiments in Haskell (more FP). I had some Python background and had used comprehensions before but just didn't have the "muscle memory" for it. This course pretty much gives the big spoiler at the start with the core principle it presents (you need to use the course, i'm not going to spoil it here). Then all the lessons go through lots of repetition. I was able to keep up at 1.5x to 1.75x speed. However, the repetition was useful. At the end of the course I was able to think in List comprehensions, Set and Map comprehensions too and in Python. For me, my other goal with this course was met: seeing lots of other useful built ins in Python and the libraries so when I go back to my Pytorch training I'll be able to focus more on the ML tools and less fumbling with Python. The instructor was clear, repeated the message (which is a basic principle in conveying information and gaining a skill) so unless you have a hard time with coding this will likely get you the "muscle memory" you need for comprehensions. There is a section on generators which I found useful too.

His English is perfect (of course), his explanations are logically well done. The pace or rhythm of this course is very good. Overall I wish all courses should be like this one.

Clear explanations and with multiple examples. Helped me fill learning gaps. haven't seen anyone going this deeper in python comprehensions. recommended if you looking to advance your python skills and get practical understanding of the language.

The course was very practical - there were tons of exercises. The lecturer didn't assume I know things, but rather explained everything that was happening on the screen. Aside from comprehensions, I was able to learn many small things that I'll use at work.

Some parts of the course were quite slow. Some parts were quite interesting. In any case it was an good course. Cheers

Great second course from this instructor! I would recommend both of his courses. This course moved on more from the introductory learning and I found myself learning about new areas such as the Walrus operation! what a name! the instructor is clear and engaging through out the course and very consise. looking forward to any future courses!!!
